My favorite Gyllenhaal role. He was just perfect in this. And I feel like Det. Loki deserves 10 more movies. If they're written and directed just as good as Prisoners.

I'd say this one and his portrayal of Robert Graysmith in Zodiac are my two favorites. I really love Zodiac as a movie in general and this was sort of directed with the same feel so that's probably why I liked this one too!

Jake should have at least 2 Oscars by now. He's insanely versatile. Compare this character to Lou Bloom, or to Seymour. Whether in a movie or on stage he's totally committed to the role.

Well that tattoos are all just meaningful to Detective Loki, but at certain times he hides the tattoos and in other times he is careless, as if he is ashamed of something in his past. He was part of a boys home, that is an institution along with his mason ring representing institution, and finally the police force representing institution. He seems to want to break from institution but he knows it so well. Institution goes along with the kidnappers cult, which is why is uncomfortable/on edge.

I mean it's definitely part of his character, as stated by gangsterturk25. But I think the purpose of the tattoos were to establish the fact that he had a checkered past, which was what Jake referenced when he mentioned his character was an orphan and a juvenile criminal in the interview.

One heck of a character. I hope his character gets a continuation in his story in either a movie or a series. The character was quite well-written. But there has to be good writing and directing though. And obviously the character just wouldn't work as well if he was recast. But that's just my opinion.

When I saw Prisoners, and I'm just watching from home here on my laptop, Youtubing, I was in for a big treat! I thought that I was just going to see your typical "cat and mouse" kind of movie where there is a policeman looking for a criminal, but I found something more, which is to say that there are twists and turns in the plot that I think are great. If it were just entertainment. I think that if you push beyond the whole.. 'it's not just entertainment', 'what if it could be real,' kind of thing... then it becomes one of the most scariest Frightening experiences that anyone could personally experience either in one's family or to you as a prisoner. There are some things that are controversial in the movie (and are surprising) such as the fact that Hugh Jackman's character steals the suspect and beats him up; torturing him. Also, if one pays careful attention Jake Gyllenhaal's character Detective Loki keeps missing him beating him up! He keeps almost letting him go by Fate, almost as though he sided with Hugh Jackman, the father of one of the girls. Now, my question is Would he? Would Det. Loki protect Hugh Jackman? Defend his innocence? Or would he put him in prison? Det. Loki is in a type of mental prison when he searches as through a maze for the stolen children, trying to do his job. He goes well and above and beyond that though; we can see that as an audience, I think that's why we are on his side so much! And Hugh Jackman and Terrance Howard are also both mental prisoners, not only mental, but physical prisoners to not having their daughters back home! The feeling of safety that goes along with this movie is inescapable and its effect on the human mind; without it we truly are prisoners. I loved also how Viola Davis and Melissa Leo had strong roles in this movie too. For instance, when Viola goes to visit Paul Dano's character (whom Hugh Jackman suspects) she almost gets her face slashed with glass by him when she loosens his straps and sets him free. Very controversial! In that she should probably have stood back and not gotten so close or set him free. What if she were to become living proof that her husband played by Terrance Howard had been involved in torturing the suspect? Melissa Leo had a great role too as the woman who seems too weak to interact because psychologically she just can't stand it. She just by her very nature of being at home though gets a brush with another suspect who enters her home. And she brings the audience to cold chills! Only a mother's love. In the end of the movie, it is the two women who stroll the girls out of the hospital (one in a wheelchair). And it is women who are closest to the children. The two girls will forever have to deal with their memories of having been prisoners of a twisted woman's mind!

Physical things, like the twitch and stuff like that, that sort of began as an idea, early on. It really just felt right; I can't exactly explain why at first. And then, as I realized that he had so much going on in his mind, so many pieces of information to hold onto, and, emotionally, he was repressing so much, that sometimes that comes out in strange physical ways and attributes and tics. And I found that to be a way in which it was like an expression of this emotional state; he just couldn't emote, because it would hurt the case. It could hurt him in trying to figure out the case, it could cause great doubt. So he was just dealing with computing so much that it was almost like an overload. It was like a glitch.
