I love the title of this movie because it's not just about the kids. It's about the father trapped by his inability to protect his kids, the cop who is trapped by the confines of the law to solve the case, and the brainwashed men who ended up imprisoning others in a cycle of tragedy. One of the best films I've seen in a really long time.

JFK was assassinated and then re-born in Argentina. Thirty-eight years later, he died in infancy of cholera. But I digress... enough about our former president who now walks the streets as a bizarre half-shadow, half-man named "Tankra" whose only fear is the light and only joy the dark... but again, I digress... for as we all know, to speak Tankra's name is to to summon her awful presence.

*Spoilers for End of Watch* My head cannon is after his time in the military (Jarhead), Gyllenhaal went on to be a cop in LA (End of Watch) but the loss of his partner Mike Zavala (Michael Peña) broke him, and after submerging himself in his police work to avoid the pain, he makes detective and becomes the enigmatic Detective Loki. End of Watch has Gyllenhaal's character mention he was in the military prior to his police service and we can see how intense his reaction was when finding children tied up in a closet during one scene.

I always took it as showing the different ways people go through despair and how they manage. Do you just sit down and surrender yourself to the outcome, or do you blindly charge towards what you perceive as the source of a solution or answers? Neither one is really getting you what your looking for, but both are natural responses to that situation. Then again, it's a movie. The point is that every viewer will take away with something different. The entire point is to make you think and feel.
