When the U.S. STARTED THIS program, numerous inmates commented that these dogs were the first things that ever loved them and made them feel worthwhile. It was also the first time inmates could trust a living thing enough to love them back. Says a lot.

Sometimes receiving the unconditional love that animals provide is what is lacking. To see how the trainers look at these dogs and put them above themselves speaks volumes. Prayers to the inmates and dogs on their 'habilitation'

These programs not only help inmates, but also help people who end up with these dogs. I wish the US would create more of these types of programs. Of course, certain criminals shouldn't be allowed around the dogs, but a lot of our prison system is filled with non-violent offenders like drug addicts. Giving them training, a purpose, the knowledge that they've helped someone by training the dogs, and a dog that loves them unconditionally is good for the psyche. We have some facilities that even train inmates how to groom dogs, which also gives them a skill to take into the real world once released.
@suzannehartmann946

Be careful about defining a drug addict as nonviolent. Some are some are very violent. And some remain on drugs while in prison. It is lucrative business in many prisons.
@Sasha-up9er
@Sasha-up9er 2 жыл бұрын
@@suzannehartmann946 obviously it's a case by case basis. But there are probably way more people that this kind of program could benefit than people who would take advantage and hurt the animals.

A long time ago, my daughter and I volunteered with a similar program in the United States called Puppies Behind Bars, although this was with female prisoners. We would go to the prison once a week and pick up a pup and take them out to the community so the puppies could learn to socialize out in the public. It was a great experience for everyone involved.

There are several programs like this in the United States, and I honestly believe this type of program should be implemented in every prison system. It would not only allow more service dogs to become available to disabled people, but also help rehabilitate inmates as well.

This is the best program for most inmates. I have heard over and over how it softens these men’s hearts and changes the way they deal with other people. The wardens state the recidivism rate drops a lot due to these programs. We have no idea what these men have gone through growing up and this gives them a chance at a life and hope.

I went to check out a dog for adoption at a prison in a neighboring county. The dog was extremely sweet but incredibly shy. She wouldn't leave her handler's side to come and greet me. I think these prisoners training assistance programs, as well as the ones where they just teach the dogs to get used to being around people, are a good thing.

I am in a wheelchair and the wait for a dog can be years long. With people abandoning their "COVID dogs", shelters are full and dogs are being euthanized at terrifying rates. Why isn't this program in every prison? It's a win for everyone. Even if it's not for a disabled person, lots of dogs need training for reactivity, separation anxiety and many other issues before they can find their forever homes!
