Watching this made me remember reading what a father said once at the birth of his child: "I knew from now on I would never be free again". A loving parent's happiness is tied to what happens to this vulnerable being they have brought into the world. It's a scary thought.

This is my second time watching this movie, and it's been so long I honestly didn't remember who the kidnapper was. I just remembered Hugh Jackman's character torturing that guy and that he was innocent. I was shocked that Rob predicted that the aunt was involved pretty early on and Zuff predicted that Alex was really Barry! I didn't figure it out until right before it was revealed. Also, good take by Bryce on the fact that Alex/Barry, Bob and the rest of the kids who were kidnapped were mentally imprisoned by Holly and her husband. Furthermore, Keller became a prisoner of his own grief by sacrificing his humanity to find his daughter, which lead him to the pit at the end of the film. Loki also became a prisoner to the case due to his obsession with finding the girls, and escaped the prison by saving Anna. I know Alex/Barry was innocent of the kidnapping (he lived with his aunt so that's why he saw the girls) and was a victim himself but after what he did to the dog I didn't feel as sorry for him. I have no sympathy for animal abusers or child molesters. Anyway, I remembered it was very disturbing and intense but I forgot just what a good movie this is. The writing is excellent, the cinematography is stunning, the music is phenomenal (not a surprise since it's by Jóhann Jóhannson, one of Iceland's greatest composers) and the acting is incredible, especially by Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. But also an underrated performance by the amazing Viola Davis. Fun facts: The scene where Keller attacks Alex/Barry with a hammer was largely adlibbed. Amazingly, Paul Dano didn't flinch as Hugh was threatening him. The moment where Holly asks Keller to drink a little more was improvised by Melissa Leo, who thought Hugh wasn't drinking enough to make it believable. In case the studio did not approve of the more ambiguous ending, Denis Villeneuve actually shot a scene in which Loki saves Keller. However, originally, Keller was supposed to never be discovered. Finally, Hugh Jackman was actually considered to play Mark Wahlberg's character in The Lovely Bones and Mark Wahlberg was considered to play Hugh's character in this movie.

This film is so rough and so fucking good. These are one of those tough ones where you apologize for recommending it*. lmao Also, "prisoners" is both literal and metaphorical (obviously). The girls being literally imprisoned. Alex and the other dude imprisoned by their PTSD. The old lady being imprisoned by her hatred of God. Loki imprisoned by his need to solve every case. Hugh being imprisoned by his need to provide and save his family. Hugh's wife imprisoned by her grief. Even the audience being imprisoned by the need for resolution at the end, which we don't get. There are obvious good and evil characters here but, aside from the kids and the victims like Alex, no one is purely so. Hugh and Loki make ambiguous and unambiguous choices in the name of good which can be interpreted as not good. The old lady is evil but you understand that the grief she felt compelled her to action. Contrasted with Hugh's wife's grief compelling her to inaction. Even the girls' siblings shirking their responsibility to watch over them. Etc etc etc. Essentially the only pure ones are the kids, including Paul Dano and David Dastmalchian's characters who are also victims of both evil/the old lady and good/Loki+Hugh. This film has insane depth. *yes, there are 'worse' films. relax.

Dano has the mind of a child. So he was in the Rv started talking to the girls, and they went back to his house. The old lady fully kidnapped them but he helped, possibly unwittingly, possibly wittingly. But he clearly felt bad, cause that’s why he rammed the Rv, he tried to kill himself. But he was protecting the old lady up until the very doorstep of death. So he’s not innocent, he’s in control of his own actions, but he may be able to be manipulated quite easily.
