Marine explorers have discovered a giant coral reef at depths of 30m off the coast of Tahiti, French Polynesia.
The structure stretches over 3km along the sea bed and is one of the largest discovered at that depth, says the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which led the mission.
Dr Julian Barbiere, from Unesco, said there were probably many more of these ecosystems "we just don't know about".
"We should be working to map them and to protect them," he said.

It’s better that if they didn’t find it. It’d stay pristine for longer.

Not really. Climate change is affecting the oceans asymmetrically, and surface water is hit much harder than further down, but it's almost inevitable for the coral reef to die eventually if things continue the way they do. People visiting the reef will not be negatively affecting it. Besides, without an OWD and significant training/experience you won't be able to go down there anyway. 30m down for an unexperienced/untrained diver can be very dangerous if you're not careful. Even experienced divers sometimes die or are seriously injured by decompression sickness. Hell, even some nurses attending to divers that had the bends after accidents have died after exiting the patients' hyperbaric chamber. Human blood really, REALLY does not like having bubbles. The only Downside about the discovery is that some corporations (and countries), esp. fossil fuel corps, might use the discovery to tout "see, climate change is not that bad" and resist the so far meager reforms harder than they already do.

Totally agree, being at that depth and out of sight is what kept it in pristine condition. Now that they’ve found it, well you know what’s been happening to other reefs, illegal fishing, tourism etc...

I’m struggling to work out if this is a good thing humans discovered it or not. If we didn’t know about it, the greater chance it would remain pristine and undisturbed. Now it’s just another thing we can wreck like we have with everything else on this planet.

@@pandasrules7536 good for an economy, probably terrible for the reef. At least it's at 30m which is deeper than beginner's usually dive, so it that might help the amount of people going there.

I do not, I do not see in the mirror a despicable animal but instead a million year old process which preserved kindness, understanding, capacity for violence, capacity for reason and the details which make me unique to my core. We are beautiful animals, but many of us just live wrongly. I used to live wrongly, now I am proud to be a human. Proud to be myself, excited for the future, sure of the future. And forgiving of all those who do not feel the reverence. Nevertheless, christianity has left a lot of botched humans running about - what can I say? There's failures in all species.

@Kg Miller 2 yes we do go to the reefs and swim above then never touching them. We never wear sun screen or body wash or any chemicals that harm them! But every time our boats go out the beaches are flocked with tourists gathering them selves with sun screen and God knows what chemicals that the returning waves carry back out to the coral reefs destroying them. And the UN has squashed hundreds of studies and that is what kills them!
