Prius Prime. How to get max electric miles. Part 1

In this video, I show you how to get maximum electric miles from your Prius Prime (way more than Toyota claims you get.) I have been using this technique for about 5 months and have been consistently getting over 30 miles plus on my trips. I take my son to school every day which is 35.1 miles round trip. In this and the next video, I show you how I do it. Thanks to Brian for filming for me.

I just saw a guy who was driving himself and his wife around town in Maine, and he got 40 miles with 10% battery left over. It can be done. Like you, they weren't using their air cooler or heater, but they didn't switch into hybrid mode, they didn't punch it, and they were cruising slowly like good tree-huggers. I like your way too.

I have a 41 mile commute, I don’t do any of these tricks except for I shift from D to B when coasting to a stop. My best score is 41 miles with 10% battery left doing all EV.

I don't know your exact settings, but the B-mode is not regenerative. Some people interpret it as "extra regenerative braking", but the Toyota manual states "apply engine braking". In kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpPLmWBti8qflck the guy demonstrates the B-mode; we can see the regenerative braking in the Multi-Info display pretty much at the maximum, then around 5:30, he turns on "B-mode". The braking effect is very strong, but the regeneration indicated on multi-info drops significantly. He also says that he hearts the engine on, even though he doesn't see a reason for it. After some digging, I found that in B-mode the gas engine is coupled to the wheels, like in a regular engine brake, but without being fed with gas; internal friction and air compression act as brake, wasting the energy that can not be regenerated (need more braking than can by applied by regeneration, battery is full, etc.)

Finally got to test braking in various modes. Route goes 13km on odometer, 900m level difference. Checked electric range after downhill: B-mode: 15.5km D (hybrid): 17.5km D (electric): 18.0km B and hybrid started gas engine, presumably to keep oil temperature. So B is measurably worse, as expected, but not by too much.

I have a 2017 Prius Prime and with 50,000 miles. My battery miles only says 21 after a full charge. How you get 36 is amazing to me. You videos have been very helpful to me. I'll try your recommendations. I charge my car using the regular charge cord plugged into 240v (not 120v) and it works great. Charge time is less than half. Evidently it's made to do this. Remember that in this video most of the acceleration is done in gas mode, and many times the gas is on it also recharges the main battery. There is another video with a couple driving around in electric mode and also gets 50km, without any of the tricks here. Just normal driving in suburban area (no highway, rather level). I have a friend who lives in a rather flat area consistently getting 50km/32mi. I also got the same even though I live in a rather hilly area (consistently having rather steep portions up/down 100m level difference).

It is important to note the ambient temperature. Batteries work better at 20C/70F. I get 45-50km (30mi) range now, but in winter I only got 35km (20mi), and it wasn't even below freezing.

The car is not giving you more miles, the car has the same thing that my Nissan leaf had when I had it. Its called the guessometer. Its called this because it estimates how far you will go based on its experience with your driving. The more experience it has with your driving, the more it gets used to it and the more it adjusts its estimate to reflect your overall driving distances in EV mode. I have owned a 2012 Nissan Leaf, 2007 Toyota Prius and Honda Civic hybrid. I enjoyed each car for different reasons, the leaf for the fun of driving electric and no gas and the Prius for its efficiency. I feel like with the Prime I am getting the best of booth worlds and am loving driving it so far. Thanks for your tips, its a somewhat new game.

Yeah, I've noticed the "guessometer" at work in my 2017, also applicable to the time it will take to arrive at 100% charge. Everything not yet traveled (not sure if that's a good way to phrase it) seems to be a computed statistical estimate based on data from your last trip applied to your current one. It stops being annoying once you realize that the Japanese write LOUSY software.

Just bought my 2019 Prime. is 25 Electric range an average then? I haven't driven it in summer/warmer weather, but have noticed in higher temps I get a longer range. about 28-mile range in 10-20 degrees F, but my range jumped up to 31.5 today when it hit 45 degrees.

But he's not doing it right. Start up from a stop is supposed to be electric. Particularly in traffic areas. The electric on a hybrid is designed for efficiency from a dead stop so you don't burn the gas.

Plus, electric is more efficient anyway in city and local driving. You have to charge it. He's using gas at start up and that's not how it's supposed to work (my dealership told me this).

Your engine never fully heats up. I don’t think it’s great for your engine to be cold and then run hard, then cold again. The Prius will maintain a warm engine temperature at all times when the engine is going to be used intermittently.

You might be right, but the car does this on its own anyway. I'm just manually deciding when to do it. If you go faster than 84mph, the car will switch to gas, if the weather is too cold, it will switch to gas. Thanks for watching.

You use more petrol to take off!. Use battery for taking off and switch to petrol when less power is needed. Electric motor is more efficient at the start and the petrol engine is efficient to keep the car rolling. Also, keep your revs low! I owned a gen1 plug-in and used it as a taxi.

You fail to realize that you are recharging your battery while running your gas motor and the reason it doesn't always go immediately back to ev is the engine will run till it hits temperature, I have a 36.5 mile one way trip and I frequently make it all electric while running air conditioning and accelerating from lights, average speed for me is 55ish

Jon, thanks for your comment. I would love to know how you do it because under normal conditions it is very hard to get above 28 miles on an electric charge. I keep a close eye on my battery and it only recharges on coasting and, of course braking. I have never noticed it recharge. Thanks for watching.

It took me year of experimenting and finding the best route to take, I'm in northern Georgia and it is hilly. My return trip from work is more uphill and I only get 30 miles electric. I'm lucky that I can plug in at work. When you switch modes MG1 switches to charging, it only provides power in ev. I strictly follow the coaching line and coast down hills and on steeper hills use B mode, I also use B mode approaching red lights your 70 mph section of your drive is the true battery killer, you might try staying in hybrid mode that whole stretch and ev everywhere else, your overall efficiency should be better, I have found staying ev until the battery is depleted to be the most efficient and a lot less effort my average driving score is 95

@@theadventuresofmiamike2574 My Prius prime charges to 31 miles for a charge up. I can go over 40 miles just on electric. Coasting to lights and coasting downhill creates a lot of electric. The other thing is going up a hill in electric. When I get near the top of the hill I take my foot off the accelerator and coast over the top of the hill. It's learning to drive the car efficiently without driving the guy behind you crazy. By the way, you're using more gas trying to start up from a stop. Hybrids are designed to use electric on the start up and you're disrupting that function.

Basically I'm just not taking it super easy like you see in other Prius videos. Personally I do not like taking 3 minutes to get up to speed. I also think it is rather rude to make the drivers behind me have to wait until I get up to speed. I am on the gas pretty good. Obviously not doing burnouts (LOL) but getting up to speed rather quickly. Trying to burn the least amount of gas as possible while staying safe.

For all vehicles, no matter what propulsion, the worst consumption is on acceleration, particularly uphill. The "technique" presented is to do all acceleration using the hybrid mode (actually, the gas engine due to acceleration), even accelerating in Power mode. Not only that, but coasting after gas acceleration actually recharges the battery by regenerative braking, while still being counted as "electric miles". The total "gas-only miles" is small, and dismissed as "these things are wildly efficient on gas". That is wrong: the hybrids achieve high gas efficiency by alternating gas and electric modes (in a typical drive, about 2/3 of overall distance). Those few gas-only miles are the worst for consumption. If you'd use the split-screen option for the main display, showing the MPG, you'd see that those short acceleration sprints only get around 10mpg, as opposed to 55-60mpg for "normal" driving. One of the drives I saw on youtube shows 23-24mpg in the split screen while driving uphill at constant speed (some 30mph), with the initial acceleration showing 13mpg.

@@girl600show7 There are many videos on hypermiling, many going to the extreme (using tape to smooth out any crease, such as door hinges, no AC regardless how hot it is). But you should get good efficiency only with the usual recommendations: accelerate slowly, brake in advance, keep in the speed limit. One of my friends told me about his boss getting consistently 3l/100km (80mpg), but he accelerates very slowly, brakes very gently and very long in advance. My sister, on the other hand, consistently got 6l/100km when she had one as work car, and kept complaining how slow the acceleration was.

That's a ton of work for almost no benefits... You realize you can do this in HV mode without switching back and forth. Just realize when you need to accelerate you'll use gas and drop it back and it turns engine off and costing or slow will use the battery. Also, short trips are the best time to use EV mode so you don't get car into heating up.

Yes it's only in US they get different/bigger screen. No big deal because it's split in two anyway and everything is the same but in europe you get more physical buttons instead. Which is better imo.

FYI - Not heating or cooling the cabin is not a good idea. The traction battery in this car is air cooled/heated via the 2 air intakes (besides the rear seats), so not using AC when it's hot or the heater during winter will lead to premature battery degradation. This system needs the cabin at the correct temperature (cool in summer and heated in winter) to keep the battery in good health. Other manufacturers use liquid cooling to do this job but all Toyota's are air cooled and in the case of this car the cabin provides the relevant air flow to the battery.

How are you getting 36.0 miles. The max we have gotten is 28.6 miles. I’m not sure if we have been driving in wrong mode or not. We just got this vehicle in April 2020. On our dash it has eco mode then beside it has ev auto. So far this spring and summer the little car on dash says ev so we asssumed we were in electric, but now its fall and is getting cold and our gas has been turning on. It’s making me upset because we bought this car for the electric driving to use back and forth from work which is 15 miles from my house. We only use gas when we travel. We have watched so many videos and everyone has had different intel. Can you please help.

EV auto does that car goes to gas engine power when accelerating and electrical power when cruising on highway or driving slow. Button on the far right ''EV auto'' does that your Prius Prime drive only on electrical all those 20-28 miles (until your ''big/extra''battery drain, then it will go to ''HV mode'' automatically) Also if you exceed 85 mph on the highway it will go to ''HV mode'' and use gas engine.

If you use the traction battery first and use it up until it depletes, it will usually net you around 20 miles before the hybrid mode kicks in. That's why this guy does it the way he does.

I have found the range depends heavily on how fast you are moving. On back roads where the speed limit is 40mph or less you can go about 4 miles on a percent of battery with the ac on in eco mode. Inversely if I’m on a road that is 55mph it will burn through 10% of the battery in about 2 miles. Faster then 55mph will devour the charge even quicker. The best way is to save the electric for slow speeds or if you are going to be driving more the ev range before charging. If you know that you can make it on all ev with your trip even with highway speeds then burn the battery because you have the charge, use it. I hope this helps.

What I would do is just charge the battery electric to full. When I leave use all your electric battery than when its dying out flip it to Hybrid mode "Gas". I mean 54 miles a gallon is good.

B mode is more regen, slows the car significantly, I use it to break near a red light... The trick is to use the foot so light on the accelerator so that there is barely regen, you don't use gas/battery, the car rolls so you get more distance coasting. Watch the vids about pulse and glide, gliding is when the needle of is between charge and eco, make less charge, you get more roll.

Confused and not so bright😁. Hitting hvev button second time will take you back to hybrid mode. Hitting hvev button first time will take you to electric mode only subject to 84mph and 25 miles range. Holding hvev button for 2 seconds will take you to hybrid mode desiged for charging battery, yellow light will lit on dashboard saying charging.

No, you get max electric miles, by ruining in EV auto and ECO mode, while being gentle with the speeder. Slow acceleration, keep below speed limits, keep distance to the cars in front of you, predict the traffic and make long slow breakings. Use adaptive cruise control whenever possible. In EV auto mode, it will use the engine and motor for the most efficient drivetrain possible in any situation.

Thanks for the comment. Actually, I have been taking data since day one of buying my Prime and I can tell you my method works. I agree, doing the things you state will also help but I am doing most of those things and using this technique for maximum electric range. 40 plus miles per charge doesn't lie. plus, I am only filling my car up about every 6 weeks.

@@MO-hq4iz I used to have a '16 Prius eco. I only ran it in power mode. With these newer models, it really does not matter if you drive in eco mode vs power mode. You get the same gas mileage. I averaged over 62 mpg over 49k miles in power mode.

So for accelerating you use the gas engine (and reduce your gas mpg) and for coasting along at a constant speed you use electric and get more electric distance. This is a false benefit, because the electric gain comes at a gasoline detriment. And since my electric is cheap there is no way this is economical. Thanks for sharing though.

When you accelerate like that with the newer models, it significantly charges the EV battery, so your gas engine/ hybrid driving mileage drops a little, but when you stop accelerating, it will go right back up. That's why he does it. The numbers don't lie. Average 150+ mpg. I used to have a '16 Prius Eco and averaged 62 mpg driving hard like that for 49k miles, so over 150 mpg is amazing.

dude the reason you are guessing yourself is because the system built in is working to accordance- when you switch from gas to all electric its not different then then my 2017 Volt. bottom line the only way you can trick which isn't a trick the system is when you coast down hill you turn it to mountain mode. in this case its Toyota and your just working too hard fornothing . it balances out at the end. just drive the car and get your 55 mpg. when you keep up and down the modes your not gonna have a car for long …. keep it simple when you have a long down hill switch it to electric , problem is the car doesn't always switch on point. takes some time. I thought about this long ago with the volt. its plus minus and nothing new

Absolutely. If I can get close to 40 miles of EV while maybe consuming a mile or two of gas I think it's worth it. look at it like this. If I only get 25 miles of EV then the other, let's say, next 15 miles I would have done in EV is now hybrid or possibly EV depending on driving situations (coasting, not highway speeds, feathering, etc.). Then I might be burning as much as 15 miles of gas, which like you stated, is 6 times more expensive. Why not try and get the most out of it.

Don’t get me wrong the wife and I got ourselves a Prius Prime last year, so far we’ve only gotten a full tank of gas maybe.. 2-3 times? Averaging 3000 miles before getting gas. We love our prime but we live in SF plenty full of free charging stations. We get the best out of the EV mode when it’s nice and warm, but since it’s almost always cold here, we get the 25 mile EV

I was confused, so I hit this, and turned this off, then pushed this then turned that off, then punched that went 1.3 miles in EV but then went to ECO and went 3.4 miles but then hit this to go here.

I bought a cream puff 2017 Prime Advanced with just 27 K miles on it. Before that, I had a 2011 hybrid-only Prius. I promise you that the transition from the 2011 to the 2017 was a complicated process; it took me a couple of weeks' driving the 2017 to figure out what all the software does -- the PP is a very complex automobile. The documentation wasn't understandable to me on the first attempt to understand it, later attempts finally did the trick. This video shows some of the complexities. All I can say is that learning what this car does is well worth the effort. My car usage involves a lot of short trips, and my record is 1,439 miles on one 3/4 tank of gas. Much better than my 2011 could ever have done.
