Everything discussed is spot on, but the talk about other therapies hits the nail on the head. I'm 58, and I've been in Gestalt therapy, CBT and Schema therapy, and all of those therapists wanted me to think different thoughts and have different beliefs. But I felt at my core (Self) that wasn't right. Therapists seemed to do the exact same thing my parents did: telling me I wasn't okay the way I was and that I should be different. The therapists didn't shame me like my parents did, but they didn't listen to me either or allowed/encouraged me to have the thoughts I had. I recently found IFS, and it all just clicks intuitively. And I can do this on my own. I find it very difficult to trust people (especially authority figures), and somehow, therapists always think they are very trustworthy, which is kind of odd, I think - given the history of many of their clients. So, this saves me months of testing out the therapist and fighting my social anxiety. Thank you for sharing this interview. Derek was the best therapist. I am so grateful for his legacy.
