That's crazy awesome! I came across one this year in my hometown of Independence, MO as they were digging to build condo's. I pulled a couple neat things out of it before they destroyed it.

We refer to them as "outhouses" in the West. Oh, and it's pronounced: "Pry-vee" as in "Privacy". Privy is sort of an abbreviation for "privacy". You should have known.

why did people put bottles in their privies?

+Constance Kendall In the cities, people used the privies as garbage cans as there was limited garbage collection back then. Even if they threw a few bottles a year, it adds up. We dug one this weekend that had no bottles so it is hit or miss!

there could be lots of reasons...people saved bottles where I live..after all these years I can only guess...depends on the location of privy or cistern...another mans trash...another mans treasure,,,,good digging ..be safe

hi.......another reason to toss these bottkles is access to 10s of thousands of bottles....remember it depends on your area....I live in rural south Carolina and used them over and over also a deposit on some....books are a good source for many reasons to toss bottles...the bottles took up space also...nice question...good digging...be safe

I have a question you may not get back right away or not at all but I believe I located 3 old privies by a house maybe dating around 1875 or possibly a lot earlier. I would like to know if I should dig them because there is a dirt slop with red bricks there that possibly I thing was a circular privy just like the one your digging in this video. but the outer wall collapsed over time from being so old. So I really don't know where to dig is the real question. Also I am located in the eastern coast .

So, you dig up old shit holes (literally) sometimes with no gloves on and when you do wear gloves you pull them off with your teeth.. Pretty sick lol.
