As a kid, the area where we lived had a ton of woods. You would walk in among the trees and all of a sudden you would find a 'soft spot' in the forest floor. Sometimes you would hear a crunch as all the old cans would crunch under your weight. We'd dig these up and find old amber glass Clorox bottles, milk bottles, medicine bottles, broken figurines, lots of old rusty cans, and other odds and ends like coins, spoons, and metal bits. Most of the bottles were sold at our friends flea market stall for a few bucks For kids, it was good money, and fun to do. Ours were very close to the surface. Never had to dig down that far.
@CrickDiggersInc5 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome and one of my favorite things to do. A lot of surface dumps in the woods but some of them get much older the deeper you dig down. Thanks for the story and continued support friend

You guys must've been so stoked after this dig! You found some beauts! Love the little druggist Frostburg MD! Larkin Soap Buffalo! & "the big dog". I used to dig all the time... not privy's, but at the back of old homesteads, etc. I started when I was very young around our house. As an adult there was a period of time I called it "going to therapy". When I was digging I forgot all my troubles. I went into a "zone". I miss digging. I don't do much anymore. Something happened a few years back & I lost my comfort of being alone out there. Can't wait to watch more vids! *Watching from north of the border... CANADA!

I really miss digging at the old dump sites. I used to spend hours and hours out there. I had such a fabulous collection of treasures. Loved old marbles and bottles. Have since lost all my finds to a huge life change and have moved from my usual haunts. Don’t know of any where I now live. This makes me homesick. People used to laugh at me but I loved it. Haha. May be a daft question but why don't you fellas use garden forks , or maybe you do but I haven't seen you using them . We use them all the time when digging bottles , be lost without one . I know privys are tighter areas to dig in but I see a lot of American diggers chomping away at bottle dumps but no fork . Just wondered why that would be . We are all different and nothing wrong in that , different techniques for different folks . Keep at it , great videos and love those early Pontils .

Crick Diggers Inc. yes it’s EXTREMELY hard to find. Especially now that most of everything is covered in concrete, in Cincinnati. Well I’m sure that’s the case in every urban area . My question is how do you go about asking permission. We dig privys and cisterns all the time , my basement is stuffed with glass. Lol .. But NONE is pontil, that’s all been dug, unless ya ask the owner if ya can dig up a bunch of 19th century shit in his yard .. Again, how do ya go about asking? If ya don’t mind me asking. What type of people am I’m looking for? Like a house not kept up , usually good folks though they may not have a lot, they seem to be nicer regarding other things.., But no yuppies, right.. idk ..lol I may be way off ., lol 😂
@CrickDiggersInc4 жыл бұрын
Lies, Lies, Lies other then Jesus Christ I get asked a lot how we get so many awesome permissions, and it just comes down to proper and detailed communication along with confidence. Approach the house and right off introduce yourself. Depending on the demeanor of the homeowner I’ll ask about there house, if they know where the old outhouse sat or any major development has been done. I’ll talk about bottles and method we use to excavate the bottles. I always reassure them that we will leave their yard nicer than we found it. I refer them to my Facebook page as well as Instagram and KZbin. We also have business cards we hand out for the nicer kept yards. Never dress in your digging gear but have it handy if you get a yes dig it immediately. Another good tactic I’ve discovered works well is asking for permission to probe for the outhouse. Explain probing and how it works, show them the probe, and even demonstrate in their yard for them. Just be friendly and get a good reputation built up with the locals. Everyone I talk to on a daily basis I tell about our channel and our hobby/passion. You will still get no’s that’s part of it , but be persistent. Those no’s will turn to yes’s before you know it if you are no sneaky and just communicate. Good luck man hope you land a good one.
@liveitlikeitloveall27464 жыл бұрын
Crick Diggers Inc. Thanks for responding. I like those tips. I thought about pics like a FB page , The thing is I need to find my first , then show em I’ll fix their yard.. come back after it settles, put some top soil on, straw , and seed. I’m about tired of sneaking into overgrown yards with abandoned houses. That and ROCKS. Lol If you’ve ever dug in Cincinnati, you’ll know a privy probe and regular shovel just doesn’t cut it in most cases. It’s back breaking pic axe and small hand tools to pry up the hundreds of rocks. How the bottles survive with all those rocks on top is beyond me. Lol

See I know there have to be a few old privys on my property. The original house dates back to around 1900-1910. but around the old house foundation is a HUGE rock ledge just about a foot under the soil. I cant figure out where they would have had their privy at. I dont see anywhere near the old house where you could dig even a few feet deep. There was an old root cellar about 30 feet from the old house. And there is a slab of concrete where i assume they upgraded the privy at one point to a actual toilet and running water. I have always wondered whats under that slab, was it the old privy? Hmmm...

So the probe goes into the ground a lot more if the dirt has been disturbed in the past whereas dirt that hasn't been disturbed e.g. dirt hasn't been dug up to make a bottle dump is harder to push the probe into?
@CrickDiggersInc4 жыл бұрын
Correct and you can actually feel the different layers after you have done it far awhile. And lastly the sample , it never lies, you see brick, ash, or seeds, dig a hole it’s either a privy or a trash pit.

Slick/sleek bottels is also old and special - don't just tossed them aside. A lot of us would love to have them. What is a privvy?
@CrickDiggersInc4 жыл бұрын
Yes I will toss them aside for someone else. Already have close to 2000 bottles so can’t bring them all home unfortunately. A privy is an old outhouse that was used as a bathroom.

Looking forward to the next vid guys! What's the story at 32:20 where Corey mentions you guys were kicked out before you were able to hit the bottom?

We was digging a privy in Cumberland last year and we was pulling some really awesome stuff out including a squat soda. All of the sudden the homeowner came out and told us we needed to fill it and not dig anymore so we did😊 end of story. Never was given a reason but if that house ever becomes abandoned we know exactly where the privy is.

Damnn.. that sucks! Wonder why they changed their mind after giving you guys permission? Maybe they didn't realize how big or deep the hole would be lol? Good luck to you both on your next dig on this lot! Hope you get into some more pontil stuff

It really sucked Shayne! We were just getting into some super old bottles and pottery. I guess it happens tho. We are young tho. I’m sure we will get the chance to dig it down the road

I can’t respond to your first comment about if we have permission first? Absolutely we have permission before digging in someones yard. Also we are very professional in cleaning up our area and making it look as if we were never there. We also run two live auctions a week. Wednesday and Saturday night 7-12 EST thank you for your continued support my friend.

New to the channel and digging bottles. How do you find these awesome places to dig and get permission from the people living in the house? I’d feel so weird asking to dig a hole in their backyard :/ also love your content so far keep up the great work!
@CrickDiggersInc4 жыл бұрын
Thank you my friend glad you enjoyed the adventure and finds. We just ride around old towns near us and look at houses to determine the age and if it looks like we would even have a chance of finding the privy. Then we knock on the door , explain who we are, what we do and either get a yes or no answer. You automatically have a 50/50 shot of getting the permission. Just be confident and choose wisely. Thank you for your continued support

Just a little history. In Rockford Illinois, I was digging up a yard to level it and an old neighbor, like in her 80's then in 1976, told me that all the old intact cough syrup bottles I was coming up with were not for cough syrup but were how women in those days explained their dinking habit. The cough syrup was like 50% liquor. LOLOL. Do some research on the mores of the time and how women were treated, you'll get it.

Really awesome stuff guys, I've been wanting to get back out and start digging some more but times been hard to come by. Just out of curiosity how long does it usually take you to fill in your holes?

Filling in is less than 10 minutes usually. We fill till we can drag the tarp to the hole and dump it in. Very fast method lol. Glad you enjoyed the show and thank you for your continued support friend

Just want to know. Why digging in the priveys? Why would they throw stuff in their bathroom? I'm confused!
@CrickDiggersInc2 жыл бұрын
It was a common practice to throw out the trash in the outhouse. It wasn’t as easy to get to the local trash heap back in the 1800s so a lot would get buried when they filled in the outhouses
@iaagg5 жыл бұрын
That was awesome. How did you get the permission and how did you come to a deal on who kept what bottles?
@CrickDiggersInc5 жыл бұрын
Basically we get permissions from door knocking and advertising. Whoever gets the permission gets first pick and we alternate picks after that.

I have to ask, are you ever worried about the sides caving in?
@CrickDiggersInc4 жыл бұрын
Not until we get 15 ft then it requires a Tri pod but we haven’t gotten into any that deep yet. The walls in our area were made by master masons and are still extremely stable in most privys.
@foolnfish4 жыл бұрын
@@CrickDiggersInc Definitely looks like you play safe in, always 2 of you just in case. I guess the only soft dirt is what you excavate from the fill dirt added when they change holes. Is there generally more than one privey site in a yard?
@CrickDiggersInc4 жыл бұрын
Yes sir, on average there is 3 privys per house. We have dug 5 privys on one homesite before so it depends how long they used them before digging a new one and moving the building over into it.
