My drummer Dad loved Joe Morello, so I grew up on the Brubeck Quartet and Joe's incredible solos. Sticks, brushes, hands, he did it all. His fills are amazing and what he does with a simple kit is incredible. The best.

Despite their sporadic disagreements, Joe and Eugene (THE) Wright (man) had such excellent musical chemistry...playing for and with each other....finely orchestrated by the GREAT, GENIUS DAVE BRUBECK who scorned the racists to form a great band irrespective of racial heritage (otherwise, how would you get men from German, Italian, Anglo and African decent to groove together so well in the 1960s in the USA???!!) 😂😜

Joe Morello, as much as he is respected, is probably one of the most underappreciated drummers of all time. He has every bit of the chops as Buddy Rich, and arguably more, but in my opinion, Morello is a tastier and more interesting player. The guy was a genius. Pure genius. One final thought... listen to some John Bonham solos with Led Zeppelin where Bonzo put down his sticks and played with his hands. Bonham was greatly influenced by Morello and Louie Bellson. If you listen to some early 1960's Bellson solos, especially with his double bass set up, you can hear licks that Bonham took inspiration from.

There's one thing all drummers and I mean "all" wish they could master, it's to use the left hand fingered technique, which Joe had flawlessly mastered. He was playing tripples with his left hand while keeping the tempo without losing a beat during the song. Those are the reasons why Joe is simply one of the most sophisticated drummers of all times. Morello is an inspiration for many more to come

" And he told me " He is joe Morello, for me is the best of all..." . After I grown up and I appreciated people from every kind of music like Bonham, Rich, Gadd, Beauford, Portnoy... and now that I listen again Mr Morello I can say " Yes my old man...you' re right"
@prizmetrix4 жыл бұрын
I think Joe didn't get the recognition he deserved because he wasn't "flashy". He rarely appeared on TV shows and only did solo work after the Brubeck Quartet broke up. He and Eugene Wright did play on Simon and Garfunkel's "59th Street Bridge Song". His brush work is unmistakable.

I'm a DBQ fan of nearly 70 years and I never saw Morello perform. What a special clip of this genius, hard, hard at work. Thank you for posting. It is interesting to reflect on how exceptional talent translates into fame. I think if Dave hadn't recruited Joe from Marian McPartland (who I love), Joe would have drummed out his days at Hickory House. Instead, his genius is showcased around the world due to those great DBQ trips abroad. Dawson, deeply admired by peers, sort of sequestered as a teacher. Roach's fame came with the popularity of bebop, of which he was an elder. All three much better talents than the more famous Krupa or Rich.

If this was in context of a drum battle with Buddy there truly would be no clear winner and Buddy would have to be really hot that night as well because this was simply unbelievable I don't like to really compare the two of them but this is a good solo to watch for a buddy fan to really appreciate just how incredible and musical Joe was... having said that I am a die-hard buddy fan but I would just like to imagine what was going through Buddy's head if he saw this back in the day...lol. the thing with Joe and some of the really all-time greats is they never really stopped improving and even shortly before Joe said we passed he was still perfecting his chops and exploring new sticking patterns and improving even more if that's even possible to wrap your head around the same with Buddy another guy in modern times that really impresses me in a similar way is Steve Smith that guy never ceases to amaze me and he continues to improve as well I think he is at the very top our beloved drumming pyramid now. Joe always sounded like he is caressing the drums so the music would come out on its own. Even playing them with his finger tips is hypnotizing. Musician all the way. I've never heard or seen anything negative about Joe. He showed everyone respect. Buddy always sounded like he was attacking his drums and forcing the sound to come out and surrender. I always heard machine guns and cannons from him. Not so much a musician as just a percussionist. There are many rumors of Buddy screaming at his band after every performance. They were always young and the turnover rate was high.

I believe this gig took place approximately five months before they disbanded...looks to me like JM's hats are Paiste Sound Edge...of all the JM solos, on film/tape, this has to be the longest and I'd argue, the greatest. The qualifier is on film/tape as there solos of his, on records/cds that might surpass even this monumental, swinging performance.
