My husband just had PRK and literally wants to claw his eyes out right now. The recovery for this surgery is NO JOKE. don’t let them downplay the pain following surgery. About 30 minutes after surgery massive swelling, tearing and your nose completely closes up and starts running. No pain killers are helping and he’s got all the heavy stuff on board. Mentally prepare yourself for intense pain and irritation following PRK. We are at 2 hours out right now.

Great to share your experience but as said in the video “everyone heals differently” I had prk and had pain for the day after the procedure then it stopped, didnt take a single pill for the pain as it was not as dramatic as youre describing at all, i did have sharp pain after the numbing drops wore off but either your husband is a wuss or his doctor did something wrong. So lets not scare people and say that everyone will experience excruciating pain because thats not always the case.

Seems like he got a really bad recovery. With mine I felt fine the first day and the next two days pain but I took codeine + paracetamol and it did the trick, minor inconvenience.

its because the surgeon take out to much tear cells in that slow healing eye, so eye dryness occurs on that one and this mean epithelium regenerat slower because the dryness (when you blink its tear down the outer layer of the epithelum so you need to use dexpantheol and karbomer eye lubricants to counter it) also the tear cells grow back after 3 months

Did you decide to have it done? I had LASIK surgery years ago. It worked perfectly, and I had excellent vision afterwards. But, as you age, the eyes change. So, I ended up needing PRK on my left eye. I had it done yesterday. In case you end up doing it, I have some suggestions/1st hand tips for you. You won’t feel anything during the surgery, so rest easy on that. Your eyes will be numbed. The best thing for you to do the first couple of days is sleep. Don’t plan to work or do anything but rest. This will help you heal. You may have some pain afterwards. It’s expected, but not fun. The pain woke me up last night, in fact. If you feel significant pain, call your doctor. They do have some things that can help. But know that the pain means you’re healing. The body responds to pain by sending fighter cells to the wounded area. These cells heal the wound. COLD IS YOUR FRIEND. Cold compresses will feel good on the eye (just don’t put pressure on it). Put all your eye drops in the fridge - they are soothing when cold. Ibuprofen helps. If your doctor approves this (be sure to clear this with them first), a prescription dose of it the first day or so will help a lot with any pain. Hydrate - inside and out. Your eyes will be very dry for a while after PRK. Use lubricating, artificial tears often. And drink lots of water. Keeping your body hydrated will speed the healing. Know that PRK involves scraping the top layer the cornea in order to reshape the eye to improve the vision. That’s why you have pain afterwards. But the eye replaces the cells. The healing happens best during sleep. So I’m going to reiterate the need for you to rest and keep your eyes closed. It is important. Is vision correction surgery worth this? Absolutely, positively yes. Whether you do the LASIK or PRK, it is worth a day or so of feeling crappy to have great vision. I recommend both surgeries. They really are amazing, and it is worth this healing process. Good luck! Let me know how you’re doing.
