You could,but I wouldn't recommend it. I'd take the time and remove the shell plate carrier. Its a lot easier to change out when its out there in front of you and its only one more bolt, and you wont risk breaking anything, I've actually bent the hex rod doing that, but that was probably my fault. and you can inspect it and clean it while its out.
