I've already gone head to head against artificial intelligence once, but maybe it's time to put aside our differences and work together! I recently got access to the AI art software MidJourney, and thought it'd be really cool to use AI generations as a base for some digital illustrations! I honestly think it can be an amazing tool for artists - what do you think??

Personal Opinion: “I don’t think an AI can replace a artist because why is the AI doing art (not to offend AI lovers or a AI), I mean is it because their programed for it or because the have a passion to do it, it’s unfair to them to be forced to do something they don’t want to do while we have a choice to choose if art is or not for us, it doesn’t matter if you have all the knowledge in the world about art it’s about how much you learn from that knowledge and how much your want your art to improve so I would say the artist”

I hear you, but humanity striving for a better future means we are heading to a future where no human has to work - no one’s idea of utopia involves them working. People will still make art, but it won’t be for a living, it will be for the love of making art. Which doesn’t help, I know, we are in a time where we have the ability to ensure a good 76-80% of humanity do not need to work, because they can be replaced with current technology, but doing so will cause misery for billions and put them all into extreme poverty. Also Ross in the video you mentioned 'AI is something similar to digital artists being called cheater's in the traditional art community. But the problem is the only thing digital does is allow you to erase your mistakes and brushes and blend better. You still need anatomy knowledge, lightning, composition, perspective etc like the traditional artist to do stuff digitally, but that does not have the same effect as an AI doing almost 90% of the fundamentals for you. This is a whole different league in that field. This can create weaker and cheat artists on social media and devalue digital art And the thing you said about photobashjng is valid but the thing is photobashing gave it a feel, and when done with brushed it looked right but we can't say the same about an AI I feel like people are 100% right to be afraid of this as the only art that would be fine would probably be 3d artist

You will always have to wonder from now on if a piece of art is man-made, or computer-made. People who aren't skilled at art will prefer to just let AI take over and do the work for them rather than have to go through the arduous process of learning how to make good art. It's definitely a bad thing for artists and will lessen creativity, as well as extremely oversaturate the market more so than it already is. Thousands of art pieces, or maybe even tens or hundreds of thousands of art, will be made every second by AI. Perhaps this has already happened and is happening right now. The human artistic spirit is in trouble and will have to compete in vain with a far superior artist: the computer.

It will in some cases tho. There will be no place for amateur artists because nobody will pay for mediocre art. People doing commission work for example wount be needed cus u can just let the ai draw ur oc for free looking like it was done by some pro. This technology is in its early stages, its only a matter of a few years maybe months until it learns how to depict perfect proportions. It already creates art thats close to outperform even some pros. I'd like to think that artists will get appreciated for their work but the reality is, nobody pays u for stuff they could get for free in infinite quantity. @@mikafizz1022 Why would the craft be up to us? Ai is a thousand and one times faster at replicating any style a human can make and makes up designs instantly. And if you don't like something you can just generate a thousand more images to choose from. Sure, you can decide to make things yourself, but financially and effectively speaking it's not competitive or optimal. On top of that I can see artistic creativity taking a hit, as artists no longer have to work out designs because the Ai does it all for them. Make no mistake, I don't think the human is the artist here, simply the commissioner to the Ai. I can't see why it would be any other way. And on top of _that_ it's even more possible than now your creation will never be seen in the first place, as it's flooded thousands of other ai-generated pieces of content, because everyone can make them in an instant. Can't even casually browse the Internet for art without being flooded by it already, and most don't even tag it as ai-made. Imagine what it'll be like when you can't tell ai-generated images from man-made ones. I can't help but think artists are completely outcompeted. With some luck we survive because people care, if not we'll go the way of the horses being replaced by cars.

@@sirreginaldfishingtonxvii6149 uhhhh but this is really pessimistic dude. ART is extremely valuable to the entire human race, just because gorgeous images made by AI might become easier accessible, it's still up to creative minds to utilize these tools. Besides, I mean to be a little bit optimistic.. what is old becomes new time and time again. So maybe the rise of a high speed AI art everyone market will make mediums like 2d traditional art come back! There are lots of mediums and cultural things that are becoming more antiquities of past generations than anything. I guess I just have alotta faith in our creativity and our zest for life. I'm unsure about it in some places like you are, but I have been kinda excited as well; I have TONS of stories, worlds, characters I want to make. AI seems like it could be a great option for me to make my concept art faster and I think it could be a pretty good tool to study art theory from. Maybe it might be more fair to the art community if AI Art was always disclaimed and under computer/tech categories? Or like if they were allowed in award shows, their own category? I think whatever we do we need a SPLIT between what is authentic and what is produced by an algorithm, but also allow people to mix those two "mediums" together. Like we need a balance definitely. But if it helps AT ALL there is an artist that said AI art us going to be worse off for companies with massive IP like Disney and stuff, because this tool (AI Art) is becoming so accessible to us creators as well. Like I've always wanted a still frame of the images that pop into my head, but I can't hold it long enough it's too blurry, AI can help that too, when we have specific concepts? Thanks for the reply John :D Regardless of our relationship with it, I think at the end of the day A.I (or C.I [Cyber Intelligence] as I prefer to label it) can at best mimic & pull from what already exists, as you've pointed out John. It needs something to start from in order to make something. Therein lies the limitations of A.I art: It can not create from nothing. What we humans can do, and have proven throughout millennia, is that we have the capacity and potential to create from nothing so to speak; from the infinite realms of imagination (to give that space of nothingness a label). Looking into the long-term development of A.I/C.I in 30+ years from now give or take, I think and feel this is what it's going to come down to: Us natural humans tapping into the infinite realms of imagination, with A.I/C.I pulling from what already exists that we've imagined into existence. How will the art industry look by then? Dunno, honestly. However, I firmly feel that those of us with the awareness to notice will see through the A.I/C.I's veils of mimicry and into the soul of our fellow human's great work. We'll see the uniqueness & imagination their human spirit has brought forth into manifestation, and become drawn to that; like bees to pollen, those of us with that soul-level awareness will naturally bypass the cyberspace realms of A.I/C.I (and whatever corporate infrastructure it's affiliated with), and resonate with the imaginative work of our like-minded kin. This is the first video I've seen where a creator mixes AI with, well, still being creative! And to be honest... I love it! It feels so much more genuine than the many accounts that have popped up on IG and beyond, comprised of nothing but unaltered AI images. As a person who spends hours (days, weeks, etc) doing a painting, I felt insignificant seeing the changes happening with some people jumping on the wagon to make impressive galleries with only machine-derived art. But seeing what you do here feels good... it feels right. It's almost like taking a piece of marble and carving what lies within. The marble is your base/starter, but YOU still put in the extra time to give it a human touch. I got the Midjourney invite 2 weeks after I requested it, and have been debating what to learn and create... this gives me an exciting jumping off point!

It reminded me of the first time I got my digital Wacom tablet, I was so damn excited but got overwhelmed and didn't end up touching it again after a month.😅 "Do you think AI could replace artist?" It's a very difficult question because you never know what the future could be for artist. I think AI would be an amazing tool to use when coming up with concepts and ideas. Another thing is people can use AI to choose their fav AI generated image, then pay an artist to 'fix it'. Its like AI needs artists, without artist theres only limited resources for AI to scan across the whole internet to make an image.

Art begins to explode all over and its like what happens to me? Say I grind and grind and say by the time I'm 40 (32 now) my skill has increased to a respectable state and I can even animate on my own reliably. Will there even be a market to break into at that point for me? Would my dream be dead in the water before I even make the attempt or am I just doomed to get washed out? When one thinks about that it can be a truly scary and demoralizing possiblity.

People often say things like this: "I think AI would be an amazing tool to use when coming up with concepts and ideas." If you use AI, then the ideas and concepts aren't really yours. You may tweak things a bit from what AI gives you, but the resulting work is objectively less of your own self-expression at that point than something you would have imagined and created on your own. It doesn't reflect as much of you as it would had you come up with those ideas yourself. So all art will be less authentic if people are using AI to help them come up with ideas. We're going to be seeing tons of artwork based on ideas people didn't even come up with themselves. To be blunt, if you need something to come up with ideas for you, you are in the wrong field. Looking at reference and other artists work for inspiration is usually different because you may draw concepts and ideas from other images but you have to integrate them in your own way, requiring manual decision-making to do so. The result still has to be filtered through your own inner artistic eye before it comes out onto the canvas. This is not so with AI. As used in this video, I wouldn't really consider those works to be that of RossDraws. These are works that were mostly created by AI, and edited by RossDraws. AI gets most of the credit for these works

I started as a traditional artist way before I ever got into digital and always believed everything had to come from my brain only, because looking at a photographer's image for reference seemed "uncreative" and that I wasn't truly thinking for myself. This is the first time I have seen AI used for a tool much like a reference photo in some ways, and much like an eraser or ruler, if used with a wise and open mind, it's a great helper to the finished product. For me, AI has come up with colors and ideas I never dreamed of, and I look up a lot of fantasy refs, so that's been an amazing experience 😁

AI may be able to understand the definition of melancholy and make a painting based on it, but because it is devoid of feelings or a unique perspective, it will always only be able to reproduce what has been done before, never innovate. Truly, the only innovation AI brings, is the creation of *truly* meaningless art. AI lack feelings and a unique perspective, and the "decisions" it takes are purely based on algorithm, there is no original meaning of thought associated with the art. Meaningless art doesn't lack value however, because as humans, we will always interpret and find symbolism in art, it just lacks a human connection between the artist, the art and the consumer + the sense of "artistic direction". It might in certain aspects and different art fields but as seen in the video currently it can not as it is not as refined as an artist could make it, the anatomy and certain elements were wobbly but if AI was to be improved so that it could read anatomy and make sense of what is happening then it might replace artists in the distant future. However, it could not replace the creativity that artists put in their drawings, it is merely by chance that something like that happens. Artists have emotions and feelings and a mind that can see the impossible and weird as well as things that no one else can interpret. An artist sees different things and translates it into what they see making it their own however and AI merely takes what has already been made and jumbles it together. If AI's dominated the art department there wouldn't be an artist to creatively make ideas, art, or anything that has never been made or challenged before, simply frankinstines of chance. So artists can still thrive alongside AI's, plus it's not entirely bad, people need sparks of creativity that could come from AI's and can also help alongside artists. RIP this was soo long, my fingers are bleeding. This opinion is up to debate I don't like choosing but I think that in some ways yes and others no.

I'm not sure artists will stay relevant in terms of coming up with new styles when AI can do the same. Remember, humans are also just referencing this world essentially. Nothing is truly original, and the style of an upcoming artist has no value unless they create art that AI can copy from that point onwards. Going up against AI is an uphill battle.

As Ai art floods the market Ai will be using Ai art to produce more Ai art. Imagine what Ai will be able to do 30 to 50 years from now. We are depriving ourselves of that that makes us human and handing it over to machines. Ai and human artists unifying to create art could be the beginning of cyborg art makers.

To be honest: This is the most DEPRESSING technology for my personal life. Yes, sure. AI will never be as 100% perfect as the absolute top-artists. But even just the 90% that the AI can produce are enough for most companies or whatever. So they can get cheap art and many "real" artists are going down - or are FORCED to use the AI too and just do the little polishing in the end to make a living. To me thats not what art is. I want to create art. Not let a program do 90% for me and then just optimize it a little. And the other thing is: This programs use MILLIONS of artworks without consent. So everyone can nearly copy your art with an AI like this with just a few alterations. Yes, humans will always create art. But stuff like this lowers the value of "real" art and the time you invested in it so much, it breaks my heart...

I had this realization 6 years ago, when nobody heard about AI generated art yet. Aside form being an artist, I was also a go player. It's a traditional Chinese board game that was for many years uncracable for computers, it was just too complicated and couldn't be brute forced. Then Google announced that their AI, called AlphaGo would have a series of matches with worlds top player, Lee Sedol. I watched them live. Something has ended for me that days. It was hard to explain, but there's beauty in this board game and somehow this AI recreated it. This game also feels like communication, bargaining, and this was there as well. It was uncanny. I felt fear of a new world that was right behind a corner. It came faster that expected and if a program could play this game so well, I knew that other things were just a matter of time. We feel very unique as humans, but soon it might turn out that many of our skills that we built for years are easily replaceable.

Time to go independent. I feel like if anything, it might be able to somewhat replace more industrial art jobs in studios and companies, but if you're an independent artist(like rossdraws), people will want to buy your work because it is YOURS. AI cannot replace that. Instead, you could actually use AI to your ADVANTAGE in that case, just like ross did over here.

ROSS, PLEASE, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. (thank you for your content, btw). PLEASE CONTACT OTHER FAMOUS ARTISTS AND REALLY THINK TOGETHER WHAT IS FOR REAL HAPPENING. WE NEED YOU BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. This is not digital art, this is not photography, this is not a technology to learn and use. This is a technology to replace learning!!! This is the plastic without a recycling system!! It is not made for artists. I know artists can use it, but everyone else can, you don't need skills!! It is made in a way where artists create an archive of art and knowledge made by spending time and effort, and the AI steals everything. It steals the art to feed itself, and it steals the jobs from the person it just stole the art from. EVERYONE CAN USE IT. I am not against allowing everyone to use it. I'm against taking advantage of artists. Every time we evolved with technology in the art field, we had something to learn and use. Whenever we "steal" in art, we do it for the sake of the system. We learn and make something new, we inspire each other. We don't take the picture of another artist art and sell it to a client as if we made it, only because it is faster. Ai is taking a picture of your art and allowing clients to make anything they want with it. I don't think they asked you permission to make art in your style. And I don't think a client will ask your permission to generate with AI something that you could have done for them. Because it is cheaper. You spend money and time to improve your knowledge. They (AI+clients) just climb the fences and steal the fruits. I'm not a programmer, but I think that more stolen art and some changes in the code could make the AI art look even more impressive than how it is already. And I'm quite sure that this will happen. So, how do we protect the artists?? (Artists and creatives cannot accept to be always threaten as the part of society that doesn't matter. Of course, doctors are the first experts needed in an apocalypse. But do you know how many people without entertainment would just get depressed and suicide!? At that point, even doctors would be useless. :P) Jokes aside. HOW DO WE DO ?? I have some idea, but I would like to hear from you all before, thank you. Sorry if I'm not writing in a proper English.

I don't think that AI would ever be able to completely replace artists. Although it can create really cool concepts and even roughly recreate different styles, I think that people are the ones that can turn a piece into a story, that showcases emotions that they can actually feel. And even if art created by A.I. continues to get better and more refined, A.I. lacks the emotions and quirks that people have that makes their art unique and powerful. Though, it seems like a really helpful tool for artists to use for brainstorming and getting through art block!🌈

I tried this AI 'midjourney' myself, it's amazing thing. It can REALLY help artists to gather ideas/insperation/new look for drawings, so I think it's very good thing. But I also strongly think that in time, when AI learns more and gets 'skillful' about drawing, it will defo replace artists, just like AI did it in netflix series ' Carole & Tuesday ', it won't replace soul tho, but you will never tell the difference without being told if ART was made by human or AI. So yeah, AI will replace artists or humans overall in most parts.

@@bunnywar I didn't say literally, but yes art is theft. You steal ideas, arrangements, compositions, colors, ect. That is how you grow and improve, you imitate, emulate, mix and match, come up with your own ideas and combine them with other ideas you like that others did. Copyright will never touch the entire creative process. I'm not saying that to justify OUTRIGHT art theft, but creativity at its most basic form is a type of theft. You have to start with something to make something else. Think of it this way artists always have an artist that influenced them, so on the family tree of art we can go back and back and back and back further and further in time to "more original art". Start there and after a really long time of evolution by humans we got to an uncountable amount of art styles now. The algorithm is mimicking the thousands of years that our art evolution has already taken, its just speeding up the process. Nobody is barred from trying out different styles that just doesn't make any sense. Outright copying is literal theft that can be pursued in court, but a parody idea of Barney in a 3d motion graphic of 2d shapes riding a unicycle to the beat of a thousand Mcdonald ads being run down by Wendy's mascot while a panda is squawking as a bird in the background, is very hard to argue that it hurts any of those companies, bird or panda species, ect. If you take a pose from Ross Draws, the style of JC Leyendecker, composition of early Star Wars movie posters, half of Call of Duty's character designs with a mix of Alice In Wonderland inspired aesthetic, it'd be so hard to argue that an illustration like this is an infringement on any of their copyrights. The only way to win a copyright case is if the entirety of the piece is as a majority influenced and copied from one single other piece or multiple pieces very similarly by the same creator. Like here's an obvious example. Ross Draws makes portraits all the time right? So let's say a fan for profit or free puts together fantasy portraits in a lineup. They take Ross's portraits and line them up in a single file, they copy his style in the background so the images will flow together as one landscape piece, but the bust portraits remain unchanged from Ross's original work he has monetized before. Could this be fought for? Yeah absolutely. Changing a background can be argued its transformative, but not straight up pasting in his portraits. You have to go farther for it to count legally as transformative derivative work. Maybe you could do the same poses if it was a different style or rendered completely anew, but the farther you go away from the original piece the better; legally that is. Context is even more important if it's a fan of Ross and Ross doesn't appreciate it? He can ask them to stop and that could be that. A fan that's profiting? Ross could ask them to stop and try to compensate him a bit. There is more at stake because in this scenario they are profiting off of Ross's work and posted a slightly transformed version of his work without his permission. Further context what if it's an entire corporation? Let's go with Disney. Now legally they could very well be held liable, but they are MASSIVE and lawyered up and they could potentially pressure him into signing the rights over to his work. Further further context the original busts Ross made? Are Disney owned IP Disney Princesses technically Ross ILLEGALLY originally used that IP and depicted it with his art skills as a fan, but he never received permission. He owns his work, but he never owned any permissions to do the work regarding the IP. Go back further how did Disney make their IP? They stole from society; fairytales, morals, tall tales, and stories passed down from generation to generation(Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella). They steal from history and culture (Pocahontas and The Little Mermaid). Fads, ideas, genres, concepts, themes, subjects, length ect. So much of what makes art can NEVER be made if some sort of theft were never allowed. Little kids wearing character dresses? They want to be the character, they wanna feel it recreated. In a black and white world where such a thing could be prohibited it would be pretty boring. This isn't a defense of AI art, but I'm just saying art has always been this way and the AI is just doing the same thing us humans do and studying the patterns present that WE humans like. I really hope us as an art community can find a good balance between all of this, but removing entire art styles would be a really hard feat to get them to honor if something like that ever popped into question. But if the algorithm is heavily influenced by certain modern works I do hope the artists find out and get compensation or the entire piece removed; but even THEN if derivative work is transformed enough that could be used as a new template too. Looking forward to hearing from you! Have great day! 👍 ♡♡

Art is an abstract concept in itself, a way of people putting their feelings and beliefs out for people to see, without technology being able to create what our minds make up we are left with having to do it ourselves to help others understand what we are trying to represent, the computer generated images remind me of a visual representation of an idea, not being fully formed with some gaps in logical things like anatomy or clarity of shapes, a mesh of colours and thoughts just put on there, but when youre an artist you find a way to convey those thoughts and refine them from the image in your mind (the ai image) to what you create, the AI i believe will never be able to the last steps of refining, everything a computer makes will always be slightly off since the difference between a background and the person is a number while to us the difference is one is a background and one is a person, we recognise the difference from experience while a computer tells the difference as it is, not sure if tha makes sense but yeah :D
