Can a pro dancer repeat the exercises of a professional ballerina? Ballet and dance, it would seem, are similar directions, but there are a lot of differences in it! At least the dancers and ballerinas have completely different physical training! This is a challenge video with a real ballerina and a real dancer. Will a professional ballerina be able to perform all the dancer's exercises, and vice versa, will a professional dancer be able to repeat the ballerina's exercises? Watch this video from start to finish because no one expected this!

I feel like ballet is more about long straight lines, calm and control, and contemporary is more about curves, expresión and freedom, and I find it cute to see Maria dance contemporary cause her ballet moves stick out hahaha she always gave straight perfect lines haha

ballet follows the 'rules' and stays within the limits of classical positions. contemporary kind of 'breaks' the rules and pushes the body outside of those positions.

Not all contemporary is like that I just want to point out. The way you described ballet there would apply to many contemporary techniques eg Cunningham technique and Horton technique. Cunningham is often seen as the contemporary style that similar to ballet. Contemporary can be very much like ballet but also the complete opposite. The Alvin Ailey company might be one you like for example

I would like to see the comparison of this style of dances but out of bar where i feel the difference is much more noticeable, after dancing both ballet and contemporary I noticed ballet relies on the little tiniest details to make the difference between coreographies, while contemporary relies on the range of motion of each step.

I like Maria Khoreva's videos, she is a very kind person and she wouldn't make you feel bad in a video. In other videos in this style, the person who creates the video starts doing really complicated things that he knows the other person won't be able to do and they make fun of it. That's why I think this channel is really beautiful

Both dancers are professional and beautiful. The main difference between them is the fact that Maria didn’t tired after all this combinations at all. Ballet trainings since childhood make dancers stronger and more endurant than other people. Amazing 😻

no the contemporary dancer is very endurant too, it's just that she allows herself to look human, it's not so much about perfection but perception of the movement, so we rely a lot on breathing, maybe that is why we here her

Now I kind of want to see how classical Chinese dance compares with ballet. They seem similar in many aspects but classical Chinese dance always creates a different effect for me, evoking different emotions and placing emphasis on different things compared to ballet. It's also different from your typical contemporary ballet in that it seems more exquisite, like fine embroidery as opposed to a splatter of paint or whirlwind swirls as one might find in abstract art.

Can't help but be reminded, and am realizing with this video a lot, the in-between the two styles with my ballet cross-training in rhythmic gymnastics when I was younger~ Would be cool to see Maria speak or do collaborations about the athleticism of ballet with other sports that incorporate artistic expression like rhythmic gymnastics, or other gymnastics disciplines (artistic, acrobatic, aerobic, aesthetic, trampolining, etc), figure skating and ice dancing, synchronized swimming, or even with competitive ballroom??

Maria started rhythmic gymnastics as a child before switching to ballet. Sometimes she refers to it: for example, she has kept this kind of stretching from RG, where you hold your foot with the opposite hand and extend your leg ;)

i think most contemporary dancers HAVE TO take classical ballet training at some point in their life. because contemporary is based off of ballet. ballet works within the positions, contemporary pushes the body beyond the positions and 'breaks the rules' so to speak.

Honestly: thew cutest shaming I ever saw. It is not about the persons but the background study, preparation, work differences. Briefly: there is always a way from the classical to contemporary but no chance from the contemporary to classical. But this is same in every arts and points to the importance of the “classical” hard work. As an “old school” photographer I would say: thank you Maria, a great lesson for every artists! ❤

It seems that contemporary dance is an extension of modern dance. I studied both ballet and modern from the 1970’s-‘90s but never learned the style she’s doing, tho’ I can see some influences from Limon. Also, Maria, you call some dance steps by different names from what I learned in the US: what you call “degage” I call “pas de cheval“ (to me “degage” is a tendu extended low off the floor), for example.
@mariannec.3939
@mariannec.3939 Жыл бұрын
Interesting! My understanding (as a ballet student and a native French speaker) is that "dégagé" is a relatively 'generic' term referring to the extension of a leg + foot: By default, "dégagé" is thus a synonym for "battement jeté" (which itself is short for "battement tendu jeté"), which is exactly what you're describing (hence, by the way, the logic "battement tendu" -- or "tendu" for short -- extending to "battement tendu jeté"). My ballet teacher being Russian / Vaganova, she would always say "battement jeté" and never "dégagé" (I discovered the term "dégagé" listening to French and Italian teachers). Now, when Maria executes a "pas de cheval" at 6:54, maybe it breaks down into "pas de cheval = cou-de-pied (which Maria simply skips describing) followed by a dégagé" (which is the leg extension anyway, even if in this case you don't lift your toes off the floor, since you're not coming from the tendu brushing...). Does that make sense?
@mariannestoffers5067
@mariannestoffers5067 Жыл бұрын
@@mariannec.3939 I don't know if I feel really able to make a sense of it, but is it like "arretez", when both the outturning leg and the standing leg (holding leg) muscle are shifted, whether to hence it up from floor or to get the inside turn which appears in tendu rather from the upper leg, in pas des cheval rather from the lower leg under knee? I'm sorry I might be a bit confused to ask this, but I love to ask!
@mariannec.3939
@mariannec.3939 Жыл бұрын
@@mariannestoffers5067 I'm sorry, I don't know "arrêtez" as a ballet step or jump or position... and I can't find it in any ballet glossary! In (plain) French, "arrêtez" means "stop" (at the imperative).
@mariannestoffers5067
@mariannestoffers5067 Жыл бұрын
@@mariannec.3939 Thank you so much, Marianne, for your soon given out answer, it's good you are there to improve on my French a little bit and I hope to get more from you of these explanation! There's always terms when we're difficult about and it's always good to hear something new, and share it together. Pps how do you end on a degagé - second position - forward position - fourth position - or fifth position. And what on Earth is the "Retiréez"?
@mariannec.3939
@mariannec.3939 Жыл бұрын
@@mariannestoffers5067 you're most welcome! I would recommend Wikipedia's "Glossary of ballet" (even though I don't agree with their translation of "dégagé" by "disengaged" -- "disengaged" would be "désengagé" -- "dégagé" means "open / cleared out / uncluttered"). If you mean dégagé as a synonym of (as the Cecchetti version of) battement tendu jeté, then you end it in the position you started it (first, third, or fifth). If you mean 'generic' dégagé, then it 'ends' open (to the front, à la seconde, or to the back), in the sense that, precisely, it is the initiating (opening) part of jumps such as assemblé or glissade.

it's so funny to watch these two incredible dancers copy each other because the pronounced difference in style makes the ballet dancer look too stiff/controlled while copying the contemporary steps and the contemporary dancer looks like she's trying very hard to maintain a more disciplined/intentional movement while copying the ballet steps. Contemporary seems to have a lot more body rolls, it's more sensual and grounded and ballet is highly disciplined and controlled. It's interesting but also just pretty cool that they both seem to catch on to the other's movements so fast.
