So, do you think sim racing is better with VR than a monitor set up?
@BigBawMcGraw6 жыл бұрын
Driver61 100% right on the consistency thing. I used to race (Assetto Corsa) on single screen and over 20 laps could vary by 1-2 seconds. Now in VR the variation is about 0.2 seconds. Hitting those apexes are almost too easy comparatively, and you definitely do push for that extra 0.05 seconds per lap. Disclaimer: I'm not a RL racing driver, just a sim racer 😜

There is nothing like being in VR. SturdyHSV does it have convergence? So actual 3D depth, or is it just an omnidirectional 2D?
@SturdyHSV6 жыл бұрын
No it's proper 3D, things have accurate depth and scale. I'd say 3D is doing it a disservice because historically '3D' has always looked a bit... limited. The best way I can describe it is you ARE actually there. It's not like where you read a review of a big TV and they say "it's like really being there". As far as your brain is concerned, you are there, the cockpit really is there around you, you will reach out to touch things and lean over and headbutt your real steering wheel, trust me ;) I've gotten out of the car in AC and stood with a beer watching cars race by, and I put my hand out to lean on the railing next to me (which obviously wasn't there). Without wishing to be too hyperbolic, it really is like the Matrix... you can't really be told what VR is like, you have to see it for yourself.
@wotever99ninynine6 жыл бұрын
exactly, even if you were completely surrounded by curved screens and somehow had no bezels. and had everythink lined up perfectly and not warped/ stretched etc in software.. and had the perfect copy of a cars interior to sit in. you still would not see depth. not to mention you would be broke.. .down hundreds of thousands of dollars..
@wotever99ninynine6 жыл бұрын
and the hardware you would need to render it all, unless you had some sort of eye tracking software to only render the screens you could see.. that would be impossible. you would literally need a billion dollar custom made super computer.. vr only renders to one (ok two) little screens. and only where you are looking, yet you can still see 360 degrees around you on all axis... to get the same effect with monitors you would most likely have to render everything 360 degrees whether you are looking at it or not.

I can even have a giant 8k render to a wall that I can walk up to and paint on with my wireless wacom pen. Something like that would cost upwards of 20k for a physical version of all those screens. Then there's power cost and how much heat that would produce, but that's another story. So yeah a nice monitor setup is useful. But VR lets me take that farther.

I think one of the greatest advancements over the last ten years in video gaming would be VR and sim rigs, without question. You don't truly need VR for other games, nor do you need 4k gaming for much, or realistic rigs for first-person shooters, but racing is where it shines and will continue to improve, until it matches real racing, more or less. I mean, the F1 Esports is pretty much at the same level as real F1 now (in terms of popularity), and you have top F1 drivers also being sim racers, such as Max and Lando. I can not wait to get the VR and PS4 even though it's worse than PC and I won't be getting the PS5, I just hope a better VR is out for PS4 by 2020.

Can't race without Rift now. The Oculus Rift combined with Force Feedback turns sim racing into an artificial reality. Racing is no longer confined to a 40° portion of your vision on a flat screen. You can see the world around you now, and it's almost believable enough to make you want to touch it. My first ever drive in VR was when I just got the Rift in, and the first thing I did was fire up Assetto Corsa at Bathurst in the BMW M3 GT2. The first thing I wanted to do was grab the sequential shifter and try testing out the cockpit switches. And the first experience for me was almost like a dream, looking off into the mountains of Australia when in reality I'm on the other side of the planet. Now nothing compares. VR is definitely here. I can find apexes, braking points and sense car rotation much more accurately in VR. On a single screen with proper FOV settings I often could not see the apex on turn-in, and had to guess where it was. Therefore, any deviation in line from previously learned (mostly solo lapping) made it very hard to take the corner at its maximum. Resolution isn't that bad, especially when you use super sampling. New headsets are on their way.

If you are going to try VR with iRacing and you are prone to motion sickness, there are some parameters you can tweak to your sensibilities. The parameters can be found in the document "app.ini" in the iRacing folder in your Documents folder. These are DriverHeadHorizon ; Percent to allow the drivers head to stay level with the horizon when the car tilts. DriverHeadNoPitch ; Percent to allow the drivers head to stay level with the horizon when the car pitches. DriverHeadWobble ; Percent to allow the drivers head to wobble when going over bumps. These and more can be tweaked to your liking. When I reinstall Windows and iRacing I sometimes forget to tweak these and the default settings make me woozy very quickly. I then change the settings, give my body an hour or two to relax and reset and then I go back driving and all is good. BTW my settings for those three are {0.9;0.9;0}

Seeing the pixels in the headset is called "screendoor effect". If they upgrade their headset to the Valve Index, you'll see a LOT less of that because it has double the pixel density than all other headsets in the market.

Playing around with the settings can improve the vr graphics but there's currently no GPU available todat that can push out the needed render resolution in AC to get a 1:1 resolution to a VR headset, at 90 fps (or better) with all the graphic options turned on. The biggest issue I find in VR is that it's hard to judge how fast you're really going so it's very easy to hit a corner too fast and go off the track. I'd guess it's probably because everything is in focus (vs what you're looking at). The next generation headsets, with inside eye tracking will be able to effectively use foviated rendering to more closely match how we see with our eyes while improving performance as the areas you're not looking at can be rendered at a lower resolution.

I was into the sim racing for years now, I started on LFS, but never had a proper gear till this year - thanks to lockdown and furlough I decided to go full on with oculus rift and G29 steering wheel - and oh boy what a difference it makes. I got Assetto Corsa + Sol + shader pack. It took about 2 hours to get used to slightly pixelated image, 2 weeks to get rid of motion sickness, and now half a year later (with support of shared setup by one of the drivers) I'm doing 1:42.0 in F1 2004 and having 19th time on the server with PB of 1:41.82 - I would have never done it on the screen, the depth perception lets you touch the apex 90% of the time for a start, and learning process is rapid. I highly recommend it, and if you are looking for VR set - the used one is about £200 - for a good one, G29 cost about the same for new one. Although you will need a good gaming PC/Laptop, as the demand on GPU and CPU is tripled (Two eyes + monitor, [probably its possible to switch the monitor off]) - I find it the most immersive experience that any fan of sim racing can get. 12/10

I won't deny that I'd love a sharper, more detailed image, especially when looking into the distance or trying to read signs and gauges. However, when I'm racing I hardly notice the shortcomings and I think the immersion more than makes up for them. A good wheel and pedal combo adds another large chunk of realism. Add some tactile transducers and motion platform and you find out how easily the human brain can be tricked. Then you just need some candles that smell like smoked tires and race fuel exhaust....

Got a wheel for Christmas NOW I really want to take it to the next level with VR. I just worry about compatibility for next gen consoles I’m at that point where I’m not sure if I want to move to PC or stay on consoles for the PS5? Hate to spend all that $$ for it to be incompatible in a couple years...

Nebula Skye I'd go with pc if you want to play with vr. Currently the diy-pc market is expensive due to gpu mining and ridiculously high prices for ram. But if you go with pc, you won't have to upgrade your whole system every 2-3 years. You can swap the gpu and play with higher settings. A descent cpu can be used for up to 5 years with an moderate overclock. There are plenty of people who play with a i7 2700k with a gtx 1070. Vr is still developing, so the resolution of the headset goes up for a sharper image. I'd wait until 2019 to see how things are before I buy it

@icanhaskpop12396 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest difference between triple-screens and VR is the 3D depth perception. In VR, things are more realistic because you can accurately judge depth due to the 3D stereo effect, whereas a triple-screen may give you a nice wide view, but it's still 2D and has no depth, so it's not nearly as accurate or intuitive as it relates to driving a real car. The only thing I miss about racing on a 2D 1440p monitor is the high detail, especially for distant objects, but if I'm being honest, I'm not really looking at those details while racing.

Great video! Does the vertical movement (jitter) that's happening over the rapid bumps in the VR also happen to the same degree in real life? Or do our eyes and brain sort of smooth this out?
@CarlHerbst6 жыл бұрын
It's exaggerated in VR capture, your brain filters it out.
@CaptainCrunch996 жыл бұрын
Does this start to effect you as time goes on in a racing session? Do you have any experience with this being a real issue?
@CarlHerbst6 жыл бұрын
Some people have issues with motion sickness in racing VR, in particular Dirt Rally which has constant, huge shifts of the horizon as you go up/down mountains, but I don't think the jitteriness is an issue. Also of note is you're seeing capture from one eye (why it seems off center, to the left: left eye), and it's cropped from what you see in the headset. The actual view is significantly taller, and a bit wider with both eyes. edit: older Dirt Rally capture that allowed a more uncropped view (still only one eye): kzbin.info/www/bejne/d33XhKh7jt6hrcU
@wotever99ninynine6 жыл бұрын
ive never noticed any jitter at all in vr unless my gpu is struggling or something.. and thats rare. the capture always looks weird. its also only one eye.
@wotever99ninynine6 жыл бұрын
@@CarlHerbst i get motion sick in a lot of vr games, but never in a racing one.. including dirt rally. you can also lock the view to horizon to help with motion sickness in that game, so you dont have to look up/ down hills etc,

I had the rift headset for a while, it definitely better to race with, its all more natural judging braking with a better sense of speed and cornering, I when back to single screen thinking I could keep that knowledge I gained but you lose it without the extra depth.

How about using track ir on three screens?
@aledmb6 жыл бұрын
driving on a 2d screen makes it possible for you to apply something some people call "driving by math" or "driving by the numbers", which is defined by being able to use the exact same markers every single time, using the monitors bezels as "triggers" when they cross over references on the side of the track... that's not something you can easily do with a VR headset because your head is always in a slightly different position when you approach the same corner... so, yes, 2d screens make you more consistent if you know how to exploit them against markers.
@maxcalder10105 жыл бұрын
You can use braking markers in reference to your car. Like your front bumper, that’s how you do it in a real car.
@TheClassicWorld5 жыл бұрын
@@OverbiteGames It depends. If you only care about in-game performance, then, you can use any cheat/method you want, whereas, if you want a sense of realism, then clearly, this two-screen idea is stupid. Personally, I would rather find some middle ground between the two and just use one screen best I can. It's a game, after all, but you're also trying to add some realism to it and drive really well and improve. Alas, if it was just a matter of beating the game or having fun without caring/being good, why even bother using manual and a wheel at all and more than one screen at all? Just let the game do it for you, right.
@TheClassicWorld5 жыл бұрын
@@maxcalder1010 I have only been sim racing for a week (just GT 5, the only thing I really have right now), and I find that I find 'markers' for shifting patterns, speed points, and braking points, on tracks I know well by two methods. First, my memory/brain does the work and secondly, where I am on the track, or rather, the entire screen elements, the car and track. In short, you will just 'know' when to brake and such. So, I have found it pointless and a waste of time/energy to even bother finding markers such as trees or curbs or bumpers. I'd just suggest the racing/driving line on new tracks for 5-10 laps, then you should know it, anyway.

I have a Vive Pro and I love it. Can't sim race without it. The higher resolution makes all the difference for seeing into the distance relatively well. I strongly disagree with the Lenovo Explorer comment, it has a crummy LCD screen with less resolution. If you want to go the Windows MR route, the Samsung set has the same screens as the Vive Pro, but costs a lot less... then again, its controller tracking is crap (which won't matter to you for Sim Racing, but other games will suffer), and last time I ran it, I had problems with frame stutters that don't happen on Vive Pro... but that was a long time ago, so one could hope they've fixed it.
@maxms60876 жыл бұрын
Though I'd say the Lenovo Explorer is better than the rift and original vive in every way for sim racing, and that for under $200, which is an amazing deal. The tracking is actually not that bad at all. The only problem is when you have your controller behind your back for more than a couple seconds as it won't track, but as soon as it's close to your field of vision it picks up the tracking and works flawlessly again.
