my first second reaction was that B was actually more muddy, but after listening for a little longer i just realised that was because A sounded thin and B was more full and has lots more depth.
@Yadadamizzle
@Yadadamizzle 4 жыл бұрын
Same. I bet if we had heard B first and A second we would have thought A was thinner straight away. This taught me that the order in which we hear multiple sources can play a role in how we perceive the material.

@@Yadadamizzle the brain is a beautiful, intricate structure. Reminds me of some of the laurel/yanny videos haha. It's crazy how much "patchwork" our brains do with it's internal dac equivalent function for our senses. And for audiophiles, that sounds totally backwards, but all the filtering our brains do is really quite amazing and to our benefit, the vast majority of the time

B do also smear the sound out more. More depth and warmer especially on the vocals, but A was more distinct in the transients. Maybe because of less details in the low end.

A is brighter. Classic trap. People hear more treble and think it’s clearer sounding and therefore better.

@@caseykittel or maybe they just prefer this sound sig. Doesnt have to be a trap... Every pair of ears hears different An example: I know people who would call the Beyerdynamic DT990, beyer dt880, ATH M40x or the AKG K712, as "flat" / "neutral". I tested every one of the above. They all sound vastly different. To my ears, the dt990 and the M40X are clearly v-shaped and the AKG has a lack of bass and the dt880 sounds flat/neutral to me. The hearing frequenzy range of our ears is btw not flat. So a flat frquz response headphone or dac can not sound "neutral" to a human ear..

B, Hilo...that was easy. 👍✅ -Resolution, aka the separation between frequencies. It allows you the hear "air" around the instruments, which highlights the nuances and embellish the reverbs. ***Fun Fact, High End DACs will upgrade your plugins, especially your EQs, Reverbs, and VSTs. So, instead of spending $1k on plugins, spend $1k to $2k on a good converter and your mic, stock and free plugs, monitors, and everything else will improve.

I remember I went from a Komplete Audio interface ($500, which I thought was pretty good) to a Prism Audio Titan ($4,400 at the time) and I was originally a little let down that it didn't sound that different when listening to music. Then I went and worked on some songs and found I was immediately able to recognize issues with snares/percussion/bass/stereo width/compression and correct them super quickly. Easily my best investment, and still the most expensive piece of kit I own. Keep that in mind when listening to this, as working with the audio is where that quality makes the difference; Good AD/DA conversion and high-quality, clean recording is a life-saver.

(B) almost got me fooled, on the dramatic stereo image collapse, of the synths and losing the brightness on the very first A/B pass, because I'm listening on tiny speakers. But afterwards it becomes very apparent, where the money of Hilo is - the dynamic range, and noise floor - the punch from the transients, and the clarity of vocals, e.t.c. After switching back to (A) it sounds like, when I overcook the exciters and stereo widening on something :) This is the best DA demonstration I've seen on KZbin. Kindly please do A-D stage as well!

I feel like Behringer is one of those brands where the product is either fantastic for the price or not worth the plastic it’s packaged in to a lot of people. Since I’ve been having issues with my Focusrite scarlett solo studio Gen 2 recently, I had considered investing in one of the more affordable Behringer interfaces to replace it. But due to being my families main monetary support due to COVID related issues (hopefully that’s fixed soon. Fingers crossed), I’ve had to put that on the back burner. So being able to win the interface would allow me to put that money towards other expenses and give me to chance to potentially improve recording my electroacoustic harps a lot better.

The behringer sounded "muddy" @100 to 200Hz and the Hilo sounded "brighter" in the high mid range due to Guitar Frequency territory bias maybe?? I just read the results at the bottom of your description. I am impressed. I had it backwards. This goes to show that interfaces in general are miles ahead of what they used to be years ago. And because Behringer merge with great companies like Midas, TC Electronics, Tannoy, and other great companies. they are able to produce way better products today than years ago. And because the results are a bit subtle, this goes to show that a person with a budget studio with a interface like the Behringer can actually produce very decent results at a way cheaper price point. The real question would be, if these tracks were not A and B exactly next to each other, would the audience notice it on the radio. Most likely not.

Tried this same yesterday as Ive bought a Behringer 1820 for more I/O. Compared it to a Motu M2 with the SABRE DAC. I really really dont know if in completely blind test (Im gonna test it with a friend today switching interfaces) will be able to pick the more "converter wise?" one. With this test I got to my surprise same result as yesterday: Behringer adds some top end that I would not call "beautiful" haha Is pretty subtle and I think no one thats not into audio would tell, but its there (I think). And Im not blaming the 1820 at all, as I say, Im going to make it full blind so Im not biased cause I really think DAC are at a point that they really deliver in almost every modern interface (you can check the famous gearslutz Lyra vs ADA 8200 for that...). I think there are better ways to spend money on a home studio but we always want the best :)! Also want to try Antelope ones for the clocking and specs, but pricey...Thanks for the test and suscribing!

I have Genelec 8250As but I'm running them off a cruddy PC soundcard (stereo mini-jack to XLR) until I can get some proper leads and use my Steinberg MR816. Without guidance: B. A sounded flat and dull by comparison, right away. I was sure in a split second. Listening to snare and vocals: still B. SO much more energy, space, clarity. Listening to kick: still B. A had more 'obvious' bass but it felt boxy and thumpy, like the 'loudness' button on a boombox (I'm nearly 50). B again had more depth and I felt invited to listen more rather than shut out. But here's the REALLY WEIRD thing - when I tried to listen to the low end and the difference between the kick and snare I preferred A. Perhaps it's that those frequencies (within the 'mud' range) were more present there, so that felt better. Fantastic video, thanks for this and for the channel :)

when i was young i made change from Maudio Project Mix to RME FireFace800 the difference in conversion was night and day literally like someone removing cotton wool from my ears if i had the money for a prism interface at that time it might of been too much for me at that stage haha. but yeh i find that mixing on "brighter" sounding interfaces works better for me when partnered with monitors that are strong in upper mid frequency because i find i can mix delays and reverb tails properly but then again before i had better monitors with better imaging i went to good ol cans mix on trusty hd600. the open air of a good interface not only makes things sound pleasant but for me personally means i can monitor and lower levels and not feel fatigued over long hours of work.

I chose B right from the start, there was more depth, clarity and openness, never changed my mind throughout the video. After seeing the answers I can't say I'm surprised. However, the question then becomes is the difference really worth 2500? That's the question most people will have after listening. Now I wonder, what about people who were listening to this using the same Behringer interface? Would they be able to hear the difference? I use an apollo quad, is there a larger difference that I'm not able to hear? Will the headphone or monitors used to listen also have an effect on how much of a difference you can hear? In the end what I herd from the Behringer didn't sound bad at all, it still got the job done.

This was a pretty easy blind test for me as I used a Hilo for a while. The Behringer sounds great for the price and I guess if you learned how it translated to other sources, there is no reason why you shouldn't buy one and use it. After using a Hilo for a few years I went for a Merging Anubis last year, but whilst it sounds great, the drivers on a PC (which I use now) are so unstable and you have to jump through hoops half the time to get things to work. I then had an Apollo UAD for a brief period as I have gone completely In-The-Box for mixing and mastering now and want to be completely mobile, but again the Apollo was let down by it's drivers and randomness. Sounds good though. Silky and posh. I have finally settled on an RME interface. Rock solid with really great converters and the Babyface Pro FS can fit in my pocket. I now master completely on that, a Laptop and a pair of Audeze LCD-Xs and have never been happier. I miss the posh sound of the Hilo sometimes but mine died and at the time I couldn't afford to replace it. But as I said, more than happy with the RME now and love being able to work anywhere. I would consider a Behringer for streaming etc though. The price is ridic!!

I immediately heard more depth in B but would not have been able to further identify the difference. Thanks for the focus on the highs/lows and transients/tails, that helped me hear the difference more clearly! It's a bit academic for me though as 2500 is out of reach at the moment.

for this kind of music i love A even i know it's the behringer. The reason is it's more chill and less detail (i don't like the high mid on b to be precise). behringer for the chill

Well, as soon as you the AB the first time, I could tell I liked B better. Here's the kicker, I was listening to this on my Phone Speaker and I'm outdoor! I was surprised. But I could come hear what the differences were after you pointed them out. Having said that, is it worth the price difference..? If one is making that kind of money with audio then maybe, otherwise maybe not. Thanks for the video.

I liked B. Seemed to have deeper low end and I liked the tails on both the Snare and Kick

I need it so I don’t have to use my Denon 6000mk2 as a sound card. I’m also curious if it can be used with Korg Gadget on IPad 🤔🤞🏼

"A" is like sugar icing. Seems to sweeten-up at very first moment. But there is not much substance in it. Would like to know what makes B more profound. It almost feels like the partial tones / frequencies are better aligned there. Like when you align the tracks of two bass drum mics. Is it a matter of oversampling?

I could really use this for my portable set up when I try and change up scenery when I’m in the creative process! Love to work in different environments to draw different inspiration when writing my music, so being mobile with a good sound card for my headphones would be game changing!

B is not B. Not only more depth but clearer highs that are not masked by A's mushy brightness. ...and this was listening on my humble Koss computer speakers, not my PSBs. PS: great demonstration.

Lord Help me 😂 I thought the Behringer sounded better when I decided which letter at the end of the video. Just goes to show that I need more ear training on what sounds better. The Lynx does sound deeper though. Great video!

Great listening tips! The transient contains the most info, so it really makes sense. I only listened to the macbook pro speakers, which are not awfully resolving, but using your technique I could still hear a difference. B sounded "fuller" than A, and therefore got my vote.

There's more detail in B and it feels warmer :) The vocal seems less masked when doing the snare listening thing with B, it's a bit mushy in A.

Can't say I didn't liked A, but it lacks the solidity that B has. On the chorus the arpeggio at the left side is slightly masked when the vocal comes in, similarly, on the verse, B has a kick way more controlled and doesn't sound like it takes the whole sound. The synth at right sounds more like a pluck and has more defined texture. For some reason I find A a bit wider, but I could see it as being as result of not having such a good center image.

I honestly enjoy both. I could see mixing something aggressive like rock or metal easily through the Behringer. Maybe trying to get that smooth 70s analog sound may take some work through the more aggressive transient production of the Behringer. I think you should send me that Behringer just for that purpose. I have been mixing and mastering a lot of metal and hard rock music lately. I typically use a PreSonus firestudio. I would love to try that Behringer out. I have been curious about their products for many years. The only thing that I owned by them is a 16 channel mixing board from a live audio business that I had from 2005 to 2015. The preamps on that board are great for metal guitar tones. Anyhow, great video. I look forward to the next one.

B is the Hilo I watched & listened with iPhone x I don’t read the comments maybe you write the answer. A is squashed, messy transients, phase issue B is clear, punch, tight, dynamic especially in the rhythm section. And all this comment based on listening in iPhone x (45% volume quite room)

I preferred B. Even though A had a bit more initial kick, the tail disappears. With B, the tail is clear and still noticeable but doesn't interrupt the other elements, like the vocals, etc. B I found also sounds "open" and A sounds "closed in" and that's what I liked about B. Thanks for this video! I'm trying to decide on my next piece of gear - I found a pretty good priced used Metric Halo (an older model) with mic preamps, and this video made me want to try to listen a bit more to how it sounds compared to my current setup. Thanks!

Gullfoss does something similar. It’ll take a rich mid forward mix and smash down the middle, bring up the highs, and if you apply a Fabfilter you can bullet the lows and end up with a smiley face sound. Coming from the 80s, we’ve heard all kinds of mixes. B sounded like real drums. A sounded like a synth-pop kit. Honestly I could live with both, but once you point it out, B wins. Already have RME interfaces, happy with them. It’s really not so much the interface, it’s how you translate your recordings. Thats why I bought Gullfoss, for an easy A/B. I know Izotope is nice software, I just haven’t gotten to that point yet.
