Pro Guitar Tips No 38 How to Tune to D Standard

A cool way to de tune your guitar to D Standard if you don't have an electronic tuner or smart phone available. Tuning the B string this way is particularly cool and helps keep your strings more "together". Most of this tuning method will work for E Standard as well.

thanks sie very useful and much appreciated this may help training my ear to learn from CDs I use 9s but going to change to 10s as it will be slacker think it will help cant wait for the next tip

Cheers, Richard! If you use 9s at the moment 10s will be stiffer not slacker. If it's a Fender type of guitar I'd stick to the 9s. Gibson type guitars I use 10s. You end up with roughly the same tension on both guitars then. If it's an Epiphone 10s will be fine and probably sound better than 9s.

@@SimonCLees hi sie it's a strat my trouble is I read watch videos on KZbin to try to get that nirvana sound some in eb some standard tuning some d tuning I've seen videos of people using single coils and sound just like a strat with humbucker like kurt used I've got a normal strat with 9s same effects but sounds crap to be honest thanks anyway ill get close to it some how

Strings ain't gonna make a huge difference to be honest although 10s will stay in tune better if you are detuning. Keep the treble low on the amp!

hi sie I'm not sure if you have a guitar with a maple fretboard wondered if yo do you could do a comparison against a rosewood fretboard do they play as fast is there a significant difference in the sound be interesting I'm thinking of getting a guitar with a maple fretboard and would be interested on your opinion

The Music Man Axis Sport I won when I won Guitarist of the Year back in 1998 had a maple neck but I don't have it any more. I always found rosewood and ebony fingerboards feel nicer. Sound wise I really don't think there's any significant difference. You're best bet is to try one and see if you like it.
