All these videos are also done in one session, one take and everything is pure improvisation. It's easy to forget about that. Guthrie's so amazing it's ridiculous!❤

First off, his surname sounds like 'Govern', not Go-van. I was lucky enough to live in the same town and grew up watching him play from the 90s onward. The man has no ego, and will talk to anyone, especially if you buy him beer.

the man seemingly plays at will, without hesitation or doubt, as if he's discovering the phrasing and melodic ideas in the moment over and over...endlessly creative and inspired...a bit like what Ollie Halsall was also able to demonstrate throughout his playing career

It looks like nobody wants to talk about Guthrie, i think he is to spooky for the most guitarists...... but its my hero, i am playing for about 40 years now and he is an inspiration for me! Lets hear this again boys? You know whats music is about! 👏👏👏
@bartvandenheuvel1974Ай бұрын
It's not that he's spooky, it's just to much. Yeah, he's got great technique and plays 30.000 notes in 1 second, but.. I'm not feeling it..

Very good for seeing what things he can do or how creative, but for pure feel, I'd suggest something more like his solo at the end of Regret #9 (full name Home Invasion/Regret #9 by Steven Wilson) for example.
@krebros58457 ай бұрын
I suggest showing him his solo om the Larry Carlton style backing track. The phrasing is so insane for an improvisation

Its just an onslaught of great music. Every bar is a new incredible lick or phrase you need to learn.
I'm not sure we could find a guitarist this great in the next century. He shouldn't have given up his Suhr guitar, as it has significantly altered his playing style. By the way, where have you guys been? This video has been out for over a decade..lol.. but I'm so thankful someone's just made a video about Guthrie again!

This is improvisation without any kinds of technical boundaries. If he hears it in his mind, his hands can play it. He does have a very distinctive style, however. I think I recognise him best by his use of chromatic runs. There aren't many other guitar players that do those kind of runs. But yeah, it's lovely seeing how relaxed he is and hearing how smooth everything is. 11/10 from Finland/Norway.

I grew up in Guthrie's hometown Chelmsford ... He pronounces it "Govern", but only fair that people mispronounce his name as he refuses to say Lee Ritenour's name properly.... Lee says "written hour" but Guthrie can't stop saying "Rittan orr" even after recording with the Man😃I had 2 Bass Guitar lessons with Guthrie's brother Seth around 1990, they were both still working at McDonalds ... i recall they shared a bedroom in a very small council house, they had nothing except their Guitars and Guthrie had an Fostex R-8 reel to reel that he wrote his 1st album on, he had all that stuff written in 1990, Waves, 7s, etc ... Guthrie is a true genius, even back in 1990 he was like an 'ascended master' , not only as a Musician, but as a Man, as a human Soul, as devoid of ego or pretension as a Man can get ... Guthrie is nicest Man i ever met, 100% honest in his interactions with everyone (very rare) ... Guthrie never talked down to anyone or tried to assert 'status' or 'rank' ...... Guthrie is the exact opposite of a narcissist ...... Guthrie went to the same Grammar school as my Brother .... everyone was scared of my violent psychopath brother and knew to avoid him .... when i met Guthrie the 1st thing he said was "you're Peter Harrad's brother aren't you? What's THAT like?" .... it was the first time anyone had ever expressed sympathy or even acknowledged that it was a really bad card to be dealt, being the younger brother of such a notorious and violent psychopath ... i will always love Guthrie for that, it meant a lot to me that one of the few people i can respect, one of the most accomplished and able and decent Men says "hey dude, i see your burden" when nobody was trying to help me ..... Don't want to offend anyone but Guthrie IS cooler than Jesus Christ, i would say he is on a par in terms of moral integrity plus Guthrie can play Guitar!

What scales is he using?
@YtuserSumone-rl6sw7 ай бұрын
It's the Just play fast enough then anything goes -scale. Very familiar to jazz musicians. Strictly speaking maybe 2 notes are too noticeably off in that scale, but it depends on the order of playing and it will become intuitive with time.
@snappy_.6 ай бұрын
Not certain but my guess is: Minor Pentatonic skeleton (or Aeolian) but changes through what is possibly Lydian/Mixolydian (for the 4 and 5) depending on the chord progression.

@franmanley1635 bro take it easy there's nothing demeaning about doing a reaction video. This old channel is full of tons of in-depth lessons and I've got a thriving guitar Academy full of people that find me on KZbin. All good vibes here so if you want to check out the other videos then you'll see there's a lot decent stuff. Most of it is about Indian classical music adapted to the guitar. That's probably something that you've never thought about but either way thanks for checking out the reaction video and that's got you on my channel so job done.🙈

Just flurry of notes after flurry of notes - any of the three Kings could say more (and with much more melody) in 3 notes than his 30! I can admire his technique, but I just don’t think he is a “Great” guitarist. Only my opinion (and probably mine alone)

As much as I love GG I have to agree - though remembering that its improv still makes it mind blowing tbh. Anyone who's seen a lot of his vids will be able to tell there's a run about 4 and a half minutes into the track that is copy pasted in a lot of the vids I've seen of his.

Look I’m not a shred fan. It’s entertaining for 30 seconds then it goes straight to just play a f’n song already. It gets booooooring real quick. Shred died for a reason. People wants songs not just flashing technical ability. Even Beethoven went dun dun duuuuuuun duuuuuuuuuun (Beethoven’s 5th). And no I’m not a brain dead pop or classic rock fan, 90% of the time I’m listening to classical music which is quite honestly much more impressive than what shred guitarists do musically speaking.
