Pro-Ject Phono Box DC: Test Driving my First External Phono Preamp

Since switching the amplifier in my main listening room to the Boyuu Reisong A10 6watt Tube Amp, I've been stuck using the built-in phono amp in my vintage Mitsubishi receiver, a downgrade from the one in the Sprout 100 that I recently moved to the living room for 2-channel home theater. Dumb question. Does your receiver have two outputs so that it allowed you to do A/B comparing? I’d like to upgrade to an external phono box but I’m unsure if it is really worth the investment

My receiver does have multiple outputs, one of which is connected to my integrated tube amp. I use the record selector (something not every receiver has) to route multiple input signals to the amp for A/B testing. In my limited experience, adding an external phono pre-amp makes a dramatic improvement over the built-in phono in most receivers.

When you connected your tube amp to the back of your receiver what jacks did you connect it to?

I've connected one of the receiver's two tape aux line outputs to one of the two line inputs on the tube amp. That way I can use the receiver's record selector to select different analog sources without adding any additional amplification.

Hello, i’m looking at purchasing this actual model close to me here in Canada and I assume you attach your turntable to this box inputs, the turntables ground to the boxs ground and then the output does it go back into the phono of the receiver or does it have to go to an auxiliary? I have a real to reel, tape deck a CD player I just want to make sure or not going to run out of inputs. My receiver is the Marantz 2220 .

Your turntable plugs into this box along with the ground, then this box goes into an auxiliary on your receiver. The phono input on your receiver has a phono preamp built-in, so this box is not necessary.

I want to buy this. I have the Denon DP-400 turntable currently running through a Yamaha HTR-5730 home theater unit. It sounds ok but there is a huge leap in volume when I switch from vinyl to CDs. Like 12 clicks difference in the volume meter. That troubles me. I know cds are purposely louder but that much? So I'm hoping an external preamp will bring out a more rich sound. FYI I'm only using the Yamaha as a 2 channel stereo receiver with phono, cassette deck & CD player, with JBL LX-400 Speakers 150 watts max

Yeah, using a phono preamp will bring the sound level up to the same as the CD input, so I definitely recommend getting one.

Use any power supply of the same configuration. Could be a laptop charger aswell.

Interesting. That power supply is a bit of bummer. Oh well, I may consider this option or a fx audio phono stage.

I have a question about the cheesy power supply. I have this phono stage, and really enjoy it. I know one of the ways to improve things is a better power cable/supply. I have found several power cable companies, su h as Pangea, and they have great cables, but I can't find upgrades for power supplies that would fit this phono stage. Any suggestions?

I agree that it needs a power supply upgrade, but I'm not aware of any units that would be compatible. I think Pro-Ject makes upgrade power supplies for their higher end phono preamps like the Phono Box RS.

I have this phono pre amp and it has been working perfectly for 9 months but today has suddenly stopped working. No sound at all whilst using the preamp. I can only get sound by using the built in pre amp on my audio technica turntable. Have you heard of this issue before?
