A dyno test was done, Kaase Boss Hemi heads Versus Kaase Performance heads of the more conventional (stand up) lay out on a base BBF short block. (it was a great test) The biggest advantage of the Hemi head was NOT more peak power, it was a lot more power in middle, going up to higher peak power. As well, in all out apps, motors with stand up valves are reported to make MORE peak power over the Hemi especially on gasoline, as well as being able to rev higher because Hemi pistons are substantially heavier due to the required huge domes. As well, the Hemi heads are limited on how much valve over lap and timing that they can run in all out applications due to potential valve interference which explains why the Hemi is NOT the preferred motor in NHRA Pro Stock and has not been for a long time. That disagrees with what the guys in the video are claiming about bigger mid range power with stand up valves in the 481 lay out. Explain that. www.motortrend.com/how-to/hemi-vs-wedge-shootout-jon-kaase-settles-one-of-the-most-fiercely-debated-topics-all-time-with-ultimate-dyno-test/

This message has been brought to you by the Ford fan boy club. So ask yourself if the John Kaase Boss motors are so great. When was the last time one of his great motors won an NHRA Pro Stock event? Or better yet has it EVER won one. NHRA chased the latest version of the Hemi out of Pro Stock by limiting the amount of RPMs the engines could run to just 10,500 and by the way that HEMI motor was turning the highest RPMs in the class, won back to back championships before NHRA decided to slow the cars down with EFI and no hood scoops. The cars have never run as quick or fast since then.
@frankjohnson63422 жыл бұрын
@@CoyoteFTW What year was it that ford made a 426 boss? The next thing is that you ford guy’s can’t seem to understand is that pro stock motors back then (nitro followed right behind the ruling) had to comply with the stock part of the rules. The S.O.H.C. was never installed in ANY CAR from the factory it was an experimental crate motor that ford was trying to pass off as a stock motor, the only thing that motor came stock in was a shipping box and I don’t recall seeing any lined up with the real cars at the dealerships. When Bob Glidden was winning with the 351 motor NHRA had put so many restrictions on the Hemi that they made it unusable, if it was used in a Cuda, Duster, Challenger or any other similar sized cars they had to weigh as much as the truck that towed them to the track, if they tried to make the motors with smaller CID then they had to use smaller valves??? They made it so you could not use the motor in pro stock. But Bob Glidden saw the potential of the 340 Mopar and at the first race with his New Plymouth Arrow he set both ends of the pro stock records with ease, so much for your mighty Cleveland motor. I don’t know where you got the idea that Warren Johnson “made” big Cleveland heads and put them on his Oldsmobile motor. At that point in time NHRA was still sticking to the factory engine designs that’s why him and Bob Glidden were constantly bringing each other to NHRA tech for excess creativity with their welding work and trying to pass it off as “stock”. The DRCE engine did not come into existence until after NHRA greatly relaxed the engine rules, by that time the factory only had to put a part number on the block or the heads and you were good to go. Chevy or GM had as much to do with the DRCE engine design as they did with the design of the Boss 302 Mustang or the AAR Cuda’s. GM knew that there big block Chevy was never going to be able to complete in the new 500 CID rules so all they did was pay WJ a BOATLOAD of $$$ for HIS design work and put a part numbers on it and the DRCE engine was born. The new Hemi engines that Allen Johnson won with in pro stock were nothing like the 426’s from the 60’s and 70’s and I’m sure the “Boss” engines that Bob Glidden was using was a completely different animal than the Boss 429 from 1969. Technology has called for engines NOT to have 10 pound pistons trying to run the near 12,000 RPM’s that engine builder Roy Johnson was making for his son Allen to win back to back NHRA championships with their team cars. Times and tech has helped all brands to be better.

@@frankjohnson6342 - the rule was simple 6.75lb per cubic inch small blocks and 7.25lb for big blocks. Means Chrysler didn’t have a small block worth a damn. Because Glidden was getting weight added all the time and he kept winning it want just in NHRA either First 3 years of IHRA pro-stock Cleveland’s won 1974 Wayne Gapp, 1975 Don Nicholson and 1976 Bob Glidden. All without factory support from Ford. That’s why they changed to the 500 cubic inch limit with a weight of 2,350 pounds. Trying to stop the Fords too bad the 385 series Big Block Ford we’re just as good as the Cleveland’s. First IHRA 7 second run was Dyno Don’s gas carbureted 500ci Cobra Jet, it was the first doorslammer of any kind to run in the sevens. Rickie Smith Boss 429 also ran 7.9 first national event. Ford kept winning big block or small block. At least Ford used the Boss 429 Chevy made up an engine “DRCE.” Called it “BBC” That’s the only way they could keep up with the shotgun hemi Ford because they didn’t beat it neither did any Chrysler. Rickie smith dominated in IHRA with a BBF and Glidden in NHRA. Only thing that out an end to the complete domination was politics, funding & crooks at NHRA. To prove it to you so you know I’m not being a fanboy. Tim Lynch’s proline 620ci Ford went 6.53 at 231 mph in a 3,050-pound Outlaw 10.5 car in 2008 a record then. Let's put this in perspective: NHRA Pro Stock cars, typically considered the fastest stock-bodied door-slammers, tip the scales 700 pounds lighter at 2,350 (with driver) and use a considerably wider tire than Lynch's 10.5 did. The record in 2008 NHRA prostock was 6.53.. with the crappy DRCE. Tim Lynch’s Big Block Ford would hold the record in NHRA all while weighing 700lbs more and way smaller tire..

I grew up old school. I remember the tech that was around in the 60s and moving forward. Back then 400 to 600hp was fairly easy to obtain but 800-1000hp was not . When 1000hp started showing it was big dollars and it still is. It’s the old saying “ hp dosent come cheap and if you want to play you have to pay. I’m a big of old school engines, old school tech but the simple fact is that the tech that’s out there now for making big HP absolutely burys old school across the board and on top of it ,it’s reliable kinda of sorta. For example, look at the power and reliability that’s out there now, dodge,ford, GM are all offering engines capable of making 700- 800hp easily and they are offering 3 year warranties. I agree with what your saying , I understand the argument and as hard as it is to admit it, new tech ain’t no different than old tech when it comes to dollars, you get what you pay for and the stuff that is out there absolutely puts old school tech to sleep. I’m just sayin…

I'm also old school to the point that as 12 year old, I got to work with Dick Landy in his pit fetching tools back when those cars were running times that are considered slow by today's standards. No one could've imagined that we'd have cars with air conditioning running sub 10 second 1/4 mile times.

@@danmyers9372 BBC with Chrysler wedge heads on it almost similar to the BBC SEMI HEMI which is a BBC with either a 5.0 or 5.300in bore space with Hemi heads on it the main difference is if you look at the front of the block where the timing chain normally is you can see that the Hemi and the 481-X runs pretty much the same distributor location in the front timing cover on a 45 degree angle where as a stock BBC runs a distributor in the back same as the SBC at a straight up angle on the top of the back of the cam and most of your Fords run the distributor in the front of the cam at a straight up angle unless you run VVT and just have the distributor housing sitting up front and a camshaft lock out to plug the factory hole in the intake and if I'm not mistaken you can run coil on plug that way too but you don't have to
@toddjohnson71334 жыл бұрын
Not really based on any single OEM block or head design. It just employs a lot of ideas that work. It has a deeply skirted block like a Chrysler Hemi. The cam location in the block appears to be higher than most wedge head engines. The heads look like the Warren Johnson era Oldsmobile prostock units that were based on the TFS big block Ford. When you see these in Camaro it seems the owner wants to try to pass it off as a BBC but the fact is that the intake ports are not Siamese is a dead give away that it is not a BBC. In the end i would say the block is Chrysler hemi inspired and the heads were Olds/Ford inspired. No BBC though.

Not any one particular brand of engine. Looks like they pulled different pieces of engine manufacturers designs and incorporated them into one engine. Just know it's not based on a BBC.
