Thank you for the opportunity to be a fly on the wall watching your entire mix process. I'm kinda surprised that your first step after importing the track files is to re-order (and rename some of) them before even a first listen-through of the song. I've never mixed anything but my own music. The few times I've sent files to friends for more refined mixing, they've always asked me to send them my stereo mix so they can hear my intentions before they start to enhance and remix all the individual tracks to clean things up and add (better) effects. Anyway, track organization has to happen sooner than later, just thought a run-through would happen first. Love the song. Love the structure and the sound. It's got a great alternative/Indie-pop beat, interesting chord progressions, sweet melodies & harmonies, a talented female vocalist singing English lyrics with some Hindi/Indian vocal runs, and plenty of rich background textures. Compared to the reference tracks, I thought the kick was weak and lacking adequate punch through most of your mix session (especially compared to the Billie Eilish reference track) but standing on its own, mixed with the softer vocal tones of this piece, I think your mix levels for drums and vocals came out great. Still, those annoying clicks are a whole different matter (3h:01m:30s). I know you toned them down a touch but they are still far too forward and overly pronounced imho. Not sure what frequency those clicks are hitting but they're not blending with the other percussion instruments like the shaker and the snare hits do. Instead, they come through more like a crackle -- especially in headphones. Rather than adding to the rhythm and groove, they are piercing and distracting -- at least to my ears. I noticed the working title of the track was "Hold It" produced by Real Fat Studios. I also heard the producer mention that he was considering re-releasing the song with this new mix. However, Google isn't returning anything matching this song under a search for "Hold it" or "Real Fat Studio" Can you post a link where the original track is available for purchase? Please also post a link if the producer re-releases this tune with an updated mix (hopefully without the distracting clicks). A copy of the lyrics would be appreciated too. Great job. Thanks again. Seeing your work shows me how much more goes into music production after the song is written and all the parts are recorded. Sound engineers are indeed artists too. One way to quickly adjust clip gain is to press 'T' and then 'G' to select the clip gain tool. Then, hover over the clip you want to adjust and drag up or down to increase or decrease the level. After that, press 'T' twice to return to your pointer tool and continue working. This method can save you time since you don't have to navigate to the inspector window to make changes to clip gain.

I'm a 3:08:25 I would have used a totally different sample for that Kick. It immediately grab my attention in a negative way. It feels like it just doesn't fit with the other elements which are more organic and full compared to that plasticky clicky sort of 808/909 kick. Moreover, those kick hits in the "snare" track (which it's actually a multiple perc loop basically) are the elements that make the infamous "clicks"more, i suppose, so I would have arranged them to make them fit togheter in a tighter way. Usually when i found my self dealing too much to fix a problem on a main element like a kick i know that it's time to choose another different sample.

You can change the pan knob to stereo by control-clicking the pan knob and clicking on stereo panning instead of pulling up a stereo panning plugin.

This mix is great because it closely resembles what someone who is doing production in the box and is not a top professional would do. It does not contain all the extra bells and whistles... elements! But gives you a chance to see how to take a mix that 'may be basic' and still turn it into a completed song.

As a topliner myself, I often find myself in a situation where I'm supposed to record the vocals to a production that's 'mixed and mastered', present it back to my publisher or a producer, and have it sound as 'finished' as possible. Here's what I do, just to have it sit right. My example is also basically my go-to vocal chain. My preferred DAW is Logic Pro X. 1) I use the UAD C-Suite C-Vox, to get rid of the noise/room ambience. If you don't have that plugin you could use the NS1 Noise Suppressor from Waves. 2) I use the Flex Pitch feature that Logic has and/or Waves Tune Real-Time. 3) I use the UAD API Vision Channel Strip or the SSLChannel from Waves. One thing about the SSLChannel though... the LP and HP filter don't actual cut the frequencies you set it to. You can test this by inserting the standard Channel EQ from Logic. As it has an analyzer, you can see which frequencies you're actually 'cutting'. It's a very strange flaw that ALL SSL channel strips have. 4) I use the UAD Emperical Labs Distressor for harmonics. Another great option is the Decapitator from Soundtoys. 5) A Limiter. This is how you can push the sound enough to cut through the mix without distorting the signal. I use the UAD Teletronics LA-3A or the L1 Limiter from Waves. 6) As a security measure I use the Vocal Rider from Waves, so it takes care of the volume automation throughout the track. All of the above is just a 'quick fix' that I use so I can offer a proper vocal demo and presenting a vocal that's as best it can be. Sometimes I make sure the vocal is a bit louder even, just so the idea is clear. At the end and IMO: if the vocals have been approved. They should be sent to the producer, so the producer can actually finish the mix. There might be some frequencies of the instruments interfering with the vocal, and that can only be remedied if you actually have the session open. I also make sure to send the 'Dry Vocal' (No effects) AND the 'Wet Vocals' (With the effects/mixing that I did). That way the producer can decide what to use. Hope this was helpful! You do have other plugins that can basically get you the same results for less money, if you don't have the budget for the Clarity Vx plugin. Also an additional general tip: You'll come across software companies that team up with other competitors to re-sell their respective products via their platform and vice versa. Always be on the lookout for that and make sure to ALWAYS check the actual manufacturer of a plugin. You'll find that you'll often (if not always) get a better price/deal if you go directly to the source if that makes sense. Example: Softube plugins are also offered on sites like UA Audio and PA, but are pretty much always more expensive than just buying it from their own website. Last but not least: If you have the patience, wait for special holidays, Black Friday, Cyber Monday to buy plugins. You'll often get GREAT DEALS and it'll be all worth it. Good luck!

When merging two tracks, I prefer to hide the original tracks by selecting them and pressing control+H instead of deleting them, just in case I made a mistake with the level. To access them later, all hidden tracks can be revealed by pressing H.

I'm about 3 hours in and I'm loving this! However, when he was adjusting clip gain, I wondered if he knew about Logic's update that there is now a shortcut to adjust clip gain of regions. It was pretty jarring watching him go back and forth to the top left to adjust gain all the time when he didn't need to lol other than that, this was such an amazing experience and I'm so thankful for the chance to see an unedited process of a song getting mixed and mastered!

Thanks so much for the amazing stream. I learned a lot of invaluable information from the engineer and producer. Can I just ask why occasionally the engineer doesn't high pass some of the elements that at least visually from the EQ seem to have really unnecessary low end information below the fundamental like at 2:30:34 with the arp. Is this something you could conceivably reduce or is it a deliberate choice to leave those frequencies in? Cheers.

Sometimes leaving the low end untouched makes the sound more "analog" and warm, even if you can't really hear it. I think that it could have something to do with what phase rotation can do to sound perception but i've just noticed that leaving the low end untreated (when it can be done, obviously, because if you got an instrument with a messy low end below its fundamental you must cut it trying with a low shelf first and if it isn't enough, using the HP) gives much body to the sound. If you actually need to get rid of low end, cutting with a shelf filter is more "musical" and natural and it rotate the phase less than the high pass filter at the pole of the filter when in zero latency mode.

Clip gain automation = the first step so the vocals are more even when going into FX. Volume fader automation = the final step after FX as a finishing touch. I haven’t watched this whole video, but this is the conventional wisdom, and the advice typically given by this channel.

I know this was sometime ago but if anyone else has insight I’m really curious, why would anyone decide to ride the fader or automation to me same thing which is practically what he started doing from the gate, why not use a parallel compression to minimize that tedious work. And it’ll probably sound better too if you know what you’re doing with compression. He could. Of completed multiple tasks of color tone balance even some repairs.. The only reason I can come up with and I’ve been doing this for quite some time but I know less than I know of everything and it will always be that way so I never stop learning. I’ve never met star of anything that does know all.The only answer I can come up with, but that’s just me please anyone else with any other answers is welcome is that he the mixer does not know how to use a compressor as comfortably as he should. He did give up a a clue I’m rt by for moment claiming that what he was doing was a better more artistic way of editing than let a robot (I’m assuming he meant compressor) do this gain fix job. I personally I call bulshit. Let machine do a first sweep then check the work and anything missed. If the machine missed anything you absolutely doing it yourself will miss even more and now your song lacks a competitive edge because it’s below perfect. Unless what we’re doing here is making songs to have our family and friends tell us how good we are then it really doesn’t matter. Anyone else have feedback on this?. Just curiosity. I’ve had this conversation with other engineers and mixers, and it’s always the same vibe. The ones that love riding the fader are usually the same exact ones that barely use compressors for the lack of knowledge of compressors, but will claim differently. I hope no one I know sees this, lol if you did learn how to use a compressor. Lol.

I feel like the flipside of listening through the whole mix while balancing is that it can cause you to chase your tail when instruments need a different balance in different sections. I do agree that it's important to have a good idea of what the whole song is like before you start mixing sections though.
