In this video, Sonic Scoop’s Justin Colletti gives you several tips for greatly improving vocals in a mix, including how to use commercial references to gauge how loud to make a vocal track, when to use automation, what kinds of time-based effects to employ, and which frequency bands to concentrate on while applying EQ.

Hi Justin, I was wondering if you use pre-fx or post-fx volume automation, or both on vocals. By the way, excellent video!!

Hi Brad, the usual rhythm has been to release one each week to give folks an opportunity to digest and try things out for themselves. We go through a lot in each episode and don't want to overload anyone! Thanks for the kind words and for staying tuned.

Good stuff Justin. Thanks! Just as an FYI you can ditch the camera angle changes. I doubt I'd walk around the room to look at your head from different spots if we were sitting down to have a chat. As a top notch audio guy I'm sure you're all too familiar with the concept of "over produced."

Thanks for the feedback Matt. I use the two camera angles so that I can make more seamless edits. I always try to do two takes through and splice things together to make sure I'm clear, concise, and have explained everything well enough. It's my way of respecting the viewers' time, and I'm likely to keep it up. Thanks for bearing with me on that!

No worries Justin. It's great content, and that's the most important thing! There's no right and wrong to the production stuff anyway. I use a lot of jump cuts on my YT channel to keep things moving along. Some folks HATE jump cuts, but I think it works for my stuff. To each their own. Speaking of content: attack/release times on compressors. I could really use some good and bad examples of getting these just right. I can't seem to move effectively past the auto button...

I have to agree with Matt here. People are used to jumpcuts nowadays because a lot of youtube content is produced with just one camera and then cut together. I personally find the A/B cuts more noticeable than jumpcuts... actually I think I know why this is... I have a book about this somewhere. It has something to do with cutting across the "line of action". Which in your case would be between you and the screen. If you cross that in a cut it becomes very noticeable, if you stay on one side it appears more seamless. Don't quote me on this. I read Shot by Shot by Steven D Katz like a decade ago and never produced anything noteworthy. But enough nitpicking! These series are amazing, and thank you so much for putting them together.

Fair enough, Isaw. A matter of taste for sure! I agree, and don't mind jumpcuts in a lot of talking head videos either.-Though it always ends up seeming a bit "bedroomy" and informal to me. Still, this is is something to keep in mind for future productions and the feedback is appreciated. Years ago, I was a big fan of The Daily Show when Jon Stewart, and always liked how the shift of angle from one side to another could be used to help draw attention to a new idea, a shift in focus, or an important point. I guess that aesthetic stuck with me more than the totally off-the-cuff KZbinr style. That said, I'm sure the average person watching the B&H channel has a lot more taste when it comes to video and photography than I do, and I'll certainly take it under advisement! Thanks again for weighing in.
