Props to the interview guy for asking great questions and letting him answer with a story. I really enjoyed this. Mike was a rockstar back in the day. Fast, flashy, hard charging style. These stories are awesome for any 80s and 90s moto fan.

@@blacklistedmx I ended my run at going pro in 1980 with a reconstructed knee that just wouldn't stop hurting. It is hard to recover from the adrenaline and ego that the sport addicts us to, I am thankful I didn't have to go through the development of tracks where they were building double and triples that you had to either thread the needle and land on steep sharp and short backsides of the last or you had to launch over them all and flat land past them. I left the sport for 40 years and barely looked back until a few years ago. I have come to the conclusion that it is a gene pool issue that makes greatness. If I ran a team, I would look at the rider's father and see if he was big, barrel-chested in his 40s or 50s, for I have seen a genetic pattern in this area. Look at Ricky's father, Jame's father, Dungy's father etc. I know the analogy breaks down eventually but it seems the toughest of our sport had fathers that were mountains of humanity. When I was peaking in speed in 1980 I was finding myself having to be willing to except such brutal forces into my body that many times I would briefly loose vision from the impacts. The person with the ability to accept these brutal forces without triggering their fight or flight mechanism, which causes one to let off or to blink out and lose control, would end up at the top of the heap. I think a lot of what drove these young men so deeply into drugs was that they experienced the epitome of maximum adrenaline, endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, and ego when finishing well and being almost worshiped by those of us who knew how difficult what they were doing really was so when they got off the bike they just didn't feel very alive unless they replicated it with chemicals. 80s and 90s mx put a lot of men in wheelchairs... more than any other time in the sport's history... these men were extremely brave, smart, and strong. It would be more reasonable to say my generation was the toughest; however, I think Mike's generation was the most difficult and dangerous. You are doing a wonderful job interviewing, and I hope you can grow your following... keep up the good work, and remember it will take more time and effort than you ever thought is fair or reasonable to reach the top of the podcasting world, but I think you have the natural talent as a food foundation.

Heck of an interview! The first pro race I went to was Unadilla 1992 GP and Mike was on the coolest bike on the grid, that factory Suzuki was awesome. He crashed hard though on the back part of the track and I was about to snap a photo of him with his head face down on the crossbar after remounting the bike. The justice system only serves the rich and connected, everyone else is a statistic to increase the budgets for the prison industrial complex. I've been around this sport even longer than Mike (67) and I sympathize with his misfortunes in life. My parents got me into motocross racing at 15 because I was getting mixed up with the wrong crowd and I stayed true to myself for all these years being involved with dirt bikes. My last race was this past May in the masters class and hoping to still be racing at 70.

He was a great racer. But he did not understand that the only moral justification for violence is self defense. If he would have known that, his life after racing would have been much better IMO. On thing racers can do, as for what to do after retirement,---is get a productive college degree while racing, and you slip right into the industry or some other industry, or start your own business. we don't understand that our minds are like our bodies, and the more we work them out, the better they get also. I figured that out in college engineering, because the sharp[est in the class late on, (about year 6, part time while working full time, out of 8 years for a 4 year degree), and almost flunked HS. It is human-----to think. RIP Mike Healey. Doug in Michigan

We all have the same destination in life but we all don't choose the same path getting there, some choose to go to college while others don't, no matter how we look at it, what's done in the dark always comes to light so I don't judge anyone for what route they decide to take, I just know that we lost a great one and his legacy will live on by the memories he created through family, friends and fans.. Rest Easy Mike., you are appreciated thank you..

Its always amazing how these drug addicts can manage to achieve such high levels as champions in sports ...Of course if they are just using any stimulants like cocaine then that only proves to the benefits of them as performance enhancing drugs... but if just using a depressant like weed then i would think that tends to just slow people down, except in the case of the first ever Olympic snowboard racing gold medalist Ross Rebagliati ...
@blacklistedmx
@blacklistedmx Ай бұрын
In Mikes case, he didn't really dive deep into drugs until his career was already over, unfortunately this isn't the case for a lot of top athletes, it happens before , during and after they are the top of their game. Weed actually speeds up the heart rate and it allow for them to push faster and harder. look at olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, and track star Sha Carri Richardson, just to name a few. some people look at is as a natural enhancer who tend to use it for that purpose. all in all, i'm not the judge at the end of the day...
