As someone who went to school for digital film I think what annoys me the most about phones is that they show that you can achieve movie quality videos with just a cell phone...that's not true... There's lighting which is HUGE, color grading , composition is also another huge factor in why these videos look so good. I'm also sick of people telling me how my camera's are worthless because there phone can do what I do professionally...I even had a client ask me why I shoot with a camera instead of her phone...it makes it seem like film or photography isn't a skill anymore which is simply not true.

To address your questions about what the 13/mini camera improvements mean, it's basically the same camera system as in last year's 12 Pro Max (sans the telephoto). To me, that's huge - the same camera system in the smaller form factor that I wanted last year anyway. I don't need/want the slower telephoto of this year's Pro and I've used ProRAW precisely twice over the past year, because the computational capabilities combined with the range of editing options for HEIC images is good enough for my purposes. I'm also primarily a daytime outdoor shooter, so the improved low light and autofocus capabilities in this year's Pros are very much nice-to-haves. YMWV.

Best camera overview on KZbin, direct and to the point. The biggest issue I have with video on the iPhone is, the built in app, that uses all the software tricks to make it look the good, doesn't allow manual control of the WB. When using any artificial lighting, the WB on the built in app in video becomes erratic. You can use FILMIC, but the quality is noticeably lower than the built in app. Pro Res would be nice if it was in LOG, but the other big issue with iPhone video is over sharpening and that won't help without log. So WB controls in the built in app and Pro Res Log is really what this needs to be usable. A $400 mirrorless camera shoots dramatically better video than an iPhone. Now on the stills side, it is starting to get close to a mirrorless camera, so close unless I am getting paid, I use my iPhone, I don't even take my mirrorless on vacation anymore.

There's this cool $6 app called ProCam. If you are an iPhone photographer/videographer and don't have this app, something is wrong with you. It has significantly more features than I have ever seen on a smartphone camera.

@@homecactus I agree, I use it also. I prefer it over filmic, but if you compare the quality with the built in app, the built in app still is far better. The sensor in the iPhone is garbage, the reason it can turn out amazing images and video is through computation, and you have to use the built in app to take full advantage of that.

Actually, in the specs of the 13 Pro: "ProRes video recording up to 4K at 30 fps (1080p at 30 fps for 128GB storage)" The 1080p limit is only on the base model for the 13 Pro/Pro Max.

Why the scare quotes for the "wide lens"? It is, in every way, a wide angle of view lens, that is way lower than 50mm (around 28-35mm)

Yes thank you! Thicker phone with more battery and eliminate the camera bump. How hard is that? Imagine an iPhone with a 3 day battery life!! Although in fairness I do think the phones this year are slightly thicker and have better battery.

Most people just put a case on, which brings the thickness up to past the camera bump anyway. If the phone were thicker, it’d also be heavier, would be more bulky with a case on, use more material to manufacture, etc. All things Apple doesn’t like.

The real question is..who is filming with the phone? If I have enough money to buy costumes, hire a place with professional decoration (that will cost more than 5000$) .. I would prefer any professional camera on average 300-500$ because doesn't matter, how good the new feature really is, the professional camera always will be better for filming and if I spent 5000$ to the environment on my film, of course, I would care to get the best possible image.

Apparently, the lightening port is dead slow for transferring large files. Apple should have used USB-C on the iPhone 13 Pro. Mr Jobs, I am sure would agree; he wouldn’t have messed that up. But nevertheless, Apple are still ahead of the curve. It’s the “ProRes” capability, not the AI gimmickry, that matters with this phone. It’s going to be a game changer. I use an iPad Pro…. And, I can’t wait to get this phone. Your absolutely right Zach.

I’m still working off of an iPhoneX and I do use it for work. It’s a pretty good phone and has an okay camera on it but it has been buggy from the start and I really want to upgrade to a better camera when it’s possible. I thought this year was going to be it, but alas, Apple has thrown a curve ball my way as usual. This year the price discrepancy between the US and Japanese counterparts is the biggest I’ve ever seen with the standard iPhone 13 costing the same as the pro model in America. That price discrepancy and the fact that the phones still sport the lightning port makes it impossible for me to upgrade this year. Ugh, here goes another long year waiting for the USB C port.

Thank you for sharing!! I have the 13 Pro Max and am confused a little about Portrait mode. Portrait mode has a HEIF format versus Photo mode having ProRaw. I have a question if may; I know that ProRaw is editable but, isn't HEIF just a hyped up jpeg which isn't editable? Thanks again and Happy New Year to you and yours!!👍😊

the lidar scanner is actually true, i saw comparison of the 12 vs other phones where the iphone had faster autofocus in low light. so nothing is changing there, theyre repeating what already existed on the 12 series.

Definitely. I have the X, and normally upgrade every 3 years, but skipped last year because it wasn’t a big enough jump. With the 3x telephoto (I shoot at full zoom a lot), plus macro, and better low light, I’m all in. I’ve shot with other people’s 12 and the HDR quality there is already way better than the X.

I’ve not been impressed with the new phone and features. I’m rocking the 11 pro max and in truth that’s still pretty awesome. I don’t think I’ll use the new features. The 11 pro camera vs the iPhone 12 looked minimal so I don’t think it will be that much of a jump to the 13. Feel like we are getting to the point where 3/4 years needs to pass before the tech is a substantial upgrade

The autofocus system acted an awful lot like DfD from Panasonic. I saw several instances in the Whodunnit video of the autofocus slightly pulsing beyond the target and coming back to focus.

1 minute of Prores 422 is ~3.97GB at 3840x2160 24fps. So with the 256GB model you'll get about an hour of record time. I work with Reds and Alxeas using 256GB and 512GB cards. A normal shoot day we go through about 3 or 4 cards and can copy them in ~10 minutes over thunderbolt 3 to a local RAID 5. Offloading the footage on these things is going to be slooooow but I doubt anyone will be using it that heavily.

@@CarolineFarrow the reason why I asked is because the new m1 laptops unlike the previous generation of Mac computers have been very good value for money. They outperform windows laptops over double or triple it’s price. So if it’s worth it to get the laptop, makes sense to get the iPhone because of how well it seamlessly works together. I use android and windows computers for work and not having the devices seamlessly sync up really bugs me haha. Hardware components themselves might not be worth the price, but the software and optimization really make up for it in my opinion :)

@@87solarsky physical size of sensor still reigns king, you could make a sensor the size as the ones in the iphone with a thousand mp, but the amount of light that can be captured is at most 100% of the sensor size, meaning the same amount of light data could be captured on a larger sensor with less mp
