Great outcome and very brave to shoot a wedding with iPhones. I use an iPhone 12 Pro Max to shoot photos and videos at Bodybuilding events and then upload to social media with practical no post editing. I would say of course you can - the question is "Should you?" One of the definite negatives is that you are now presenting yourself with the same equipment as used by "uncle Jack". The perception might be temporary, and of course the results are key, but showing up to film a wedding with iphones, I think you are lucky that you had great clients. I can see that going very badly with people who worry about the perception of their friends and relatives that they went cheap. I actually know people that have large rigs with matte boxes just for that reason. I also think that it's great that you guys dress in casual black t-shirts so people know who is in the film crew. But blending in at a live event will get you more relaxed and natural footage. And I have been to a wedding in the past where the film crew - was so distracting that it no longer felt like a wedding and felt like you were watching the taping of a TV show. The event is for the couple and their friends and families and the video should not be distracting their eyes from the ceremony. Keep in mind that although average people don't know much about filming - they do know what an iphone is and when someone sends them other footage shot from attendants of the wedding, from an iphone. They will notice that it looks a lot like your footage and wonder why they paid you in the first place.

I feel like editing is also really important which is exactly why this wedding video looks a lot blander then it should. I’ve made a few wedding videos and graduation ceremonies of my own on iPhone 13/11 and they’re way much better than the example shown in this video. Despite the high storage usage i always recommend 4K 60fps. And editing is THE MAIN KEY. Light leaks, transitions, text, split video

The quality and technique used in this video were amazing. Of course 90% of it is the operator not the camera, but there are a few moments where the iPhone completely blew out in the bright lights that I don't think would have happened with a DSLR. Either way, as a fellow iPhone filmmaker, I love how you tried to shoot a full wedding video on an iPhone and it really showed me the power of iPhone video. Cool idea!

I appreciate the effort you put in to this and this is probably one of the best tries to “film a wedding with an iPhone” that I’ve seen. But with that being said, you can’t avoid the iPhone colour, not without a log profile. You can’t avoid poor dynamic range and most def you can’t avoid that nasty flaring when light hits the lens directly. Also all the S line up from DJI is working perfectly for heavier set up, they are pretty bad with light set ups from Ronin S till the last one. I spent too much time trying to balance and calibrate to perfection a A6300 with a 35mm on a Ronin S and still I had a few issues. Same thing with the RS 2. What I would do is spend a shit tone on lighting because we all know the enemy of the iPhone, not enough light. Some shots are actually perfect & 99% of the people can’t tell what is it you shoot with. Either way, you’ve got some balls heading to a wedding with iPhones and I respect that, filming a behind the scenes at the same time for you channel too? Damn. Good job

There are clear limitations with filming a wedding on an iPhone. Doesn't give off the same professional feel and the dynamic range is lacking but the video itself was extremely well made. Not being able to have a shallow depth of field and switching out different lenses is the only knock on why iPhones aren't viable for weddings imo.

I only shoot pro level DSLRs/L Lenses/Etc. because when ppl look at me with it, they feel comfortable knowing that the gear is professional. It’s not uncommon for multiple ppl to ask, “So what is that? The 5D? The R5?” Regardless of if they know what the gear does, they are somewhat familiar these days so it helps ease their discomfort by saying it’s “pro level”. I said that to say you can definitely shoot it from an iPhone, but I’d never do that simply because if they know that’s what you shot it on, it’ll subconsciously degrade the final product. That’s just how humans are wired.

That is true. However, the fact is that iphone output is not of the same quality as a pro level camera. this video while inspiring, isn't what I would ever use on a real shoot with client. It's their "Moment of a lifetime". There is not enough sharpness, even in close-up shots, no proper depth of field, not much room to color grade during edit.

I hear you Cooper but wholeheartedly disagree about the final product being degraded. Content will always be King. I've been a broadcast pro since 1992, freelance pro since 2002, going on 4 Photography Emmy's, Telly winner but so what. Just shot 90% of a Travel Show in Breckenridge Co., for a former CNN producer, that will be distributed on CNN Airport and ReachTV on an iPhone 13 Pro with Crane M3 Gimbal. I currently own a Sony FX3, BMPCC6K, Canon C300, A7III's GH5's with every "pro level" lens focal length blah blah blah. My client saw the first gimbal clip I shot on the 13 Pro, and we went with it for the rest of the 3 day shoot, aside from a sit down 2 Cam slid interview. Over $1200 per day. All that to say...it's literally not what you use anymore, it's how you capture moments and tell a story. Who cares what ppl think or say about the gear you're using, the only opinion that matters is the client who is paying you. And if they are uncomfortable with the gear you use, they probably don't trust you as a film maker/videographer. That's another issue altogether.

One thing I feel as if you could’ve covered is adjusting the frame rate on the iPhone. Most wedding videos have a lot of slow motion clips (this video being a prime example) and you can tell that alot of the clips were not shot at a higher frame rate. The “jumpiness”, “staggering”, and “jittery” footage during the slo-mo clips is due to not shooting in a higher frame rate. Those slo-mo clips would’ve been so much smoother if shot at 60fps-120fps, especially being on the gimbal. Everything else about the final footage/edit was awesome! This was the only thing that caught my eye, and wanted to point out. Awesome video/tutorial! Thanks for sharing!

I'm in full support of this video as it's one of the best attempts i've seen on making iphone footage good, but sadly the whole "avoiding the iphone look" chapter all look like bad iphone footage. it's definitely the colors and AI skin tone color science. It's horrid and I don't know anyone who understands why this happens with phone footage. Also the team forgot about nd filters!! motion blur is a huge things that makes amateur footage look amateur, but having zero motion blur from an iphone with no depth of field makes it even worse

This! My iPhone 13 PM has way worse skin tones than even my 4 year old Google Pixel 2XL. And when using the standard app, this is unavoidable. A dedicated helps a bit with the skin tones. Skin tones alone would be the reason I would never shoot any kind of people photography/videography.
@SkullysPlace

Yes definitely the skin tone is a big issue but to the avg person they would be fine with it but as a photographer I would have to take it and adjust the tones before delivering it but that’s just me. Overall for what it was it was good enough for a couple on a tighter budget. One huge plus is the weight difference but I wouldn’t hesitate to use it as a backup if something ever went wrong with my main cameras. Enjoyed the content!

It definitely deserves some color grading to get rid of the iphone look, like with Davinci Resolve, but we do not know anything about the budget for the film, the editing etc. Sure it could have turned out better using the same footage, but it would be a lot more effort.

I thought this was such an interesting experiment and the challenges/results were good to see. I think ultimately, a big part of wedding photography/videography is about optics and how you work with the couple and their family and friends - and I just don't see this being "acceptable" in a wedding scenario for a long long time. When I shoot with my smaller mirrorless and a pancake lens, I get way more Uncle Bobs coming up to me at a reception asking about my camera specs, second guessing my expertise, etc. than when I use my larger DSLR, with a battery pack, and my heaviest largest lens. What they see dictates how they feel about you as a creative, and I can't imagine the shock you'd get from guests by using an iPhone, even if your couple knew and signed off on it in advance. 😂 But beyond the logistical challenges (the overheating, dynamic range) I think it's unfair because the footage looked totally serviceable!

The final footage looks great! Although, I can't help but notice the footage looks choppy, what I mean by that is the framerates don't line up with the time line? Lots of jitters and frame skips

I think it’s the angles, the details and how you’ve edited it all together to tell a story, more than the equipment that makes it good video. Which is a great lesson in itself

Why an 18mm all day though? I think a 35 or 50 would've made a huge difference in taking away from the iphone look. Also, The post editing could've been better if the lopsided clips were leveled out.

Some really helpful advice in your film regarding kit to use and technique. What did surprise me was the amount of direction you were giving the couple and their guests. I've always approached making a wedding video as if I was a 'fly on the wall' just observing and being as unobtrusive as possible. How do people generally react to being, albeit in a small way, directed?

I dunno guys, I have all the same gear as you and i still think cinematic mode with a gimbal on the iPhone 13 trumps anything with a moments lens. also, a lot of your shots and the focus on the iphone even with the Tele lens mounted arent great. the texture in cinematic mode is really nice. But it's a worthwhile experiment and thanks for making the video.

Really great tips! One thing that would bother me as the client is, your use of the word fake. It’s just not nice to think back on all the “fake” things I was told to do on my weeding day. Maybe words like “act” or “pretend” is a bit better or even just instruction for a scene/shot 🎥🤷🏻‍♂️

Considering the challenge you did a great job! But if I was a client, I’d be so mad. You can definitely tell it was shot with a phone. The lack of depth and over blown highlights is cringe. But everything else (story, editing, shot selection) was on point. 👍 To answer the question, no I don’t think you can shoot a wedding with an iPhone. Unless it’s for free or if the budget is really small.

@@brindille7771 Most people may not be knowledgeable about videography, but most people would freak out if they paid for a professional videographer only to see you turn up with an iPhone. They'd expect some fancy gear, not something they probably already own. Plus any bride would immediately tell something is off when comparing her wedding videos to those of her friends that would be shot on DSLRs. She may not know what depth of field or blown out highlights means, but she'll definitely know that something looks wrong and amateur

@@brindille7771 you really need to stop thinking people are dumb, or blind. Like a videographer or photographer has magical eyes that sees what a client cant. They can clearly see jitter, they clearly know when an image pops off the page or screen from shallow depth of field and good color grade and sharp glass. they may not be able to articulate it in our jargon, but they know clearly...when they see good images that theirs didnt look like that!

It was okay if you only look at it on the perspective of video quality. A bigger sensor has its perks and the loss of the gradient details are really obvious. Especially when you look at skin and the hard edges... BUT it was also amazing for the fact that this was shot on an iphone!

I'm just noticing and wondering about the smoothness of motion. Does it seem that some of the shots are a little unsteady? Even with your Ronin? I wonder what this would have looked like using the iPhone's stabilization algorithm. i.e., do you need the Ronin at all? Would a grip with iphone stabilization on give better or equal results? Would a small monopod work?

@@euroker05 I think that they recorded everything in 4K60, and now we see the video in 4K24, which makes the frames uneven and created this overall stutter throughout the entire finished video. They should have posted it in 4K30 so we can see it properly. Editing in the wrong frame rate can totally destroy the vibe of the video. Hence why editing a 25FPS video on a 30FPS timeline might look bad (or vice versa) or 50FPS on 60FPS timeline (also vise versa), it should never be done before conversion, as it can have terrible results.

I noticed that you didn't cover the audio during the video, but I assume you guys recorded that separately out of the PA like you normally would and synced that up later. Stoked that you guys were able to get approval from the couple to do this. If couples don’t care for the quality of the footage and just want documentation I don’t see why this wouldn’t work. But most couples, at least mine, hire me for my creative eye and unique editing. This wedding video looks like every Sony shooters wedding videos. Everything in focus, gimbal shots the entire time, overused parallax and slow mo. No good use of sound or music. Like I said it’s great for documentation but it doesn’t tell the story of the couple or show off their personalities
