Dang. This has me rethinking my whole website now. But you're totally right, if someone didn't know me and they were just looking for a photographer, my website needs to give them reasons to stay on it, make the important info easy to find, my contact info accessible and not be overwhelming or gimmicky. Plus clearly communicate just the work that I am best at and want to be hired for.

I get so much anxiety watching this because I know I'm so far behind where I could be and I let that anxiety paralyze me. I wouldn't let it bother me but its gotten to the point where it 's started to impact my health. I'm trying to get better at goal setting, but seeing these websites is daunting but also really inspiring. The fact that so many people send these in wanting your opinion and they're just leagues above where I see myself but still looking for feedback and improvement... you all are incredible! I'm going to get where you all are!

As I am considering putting a website together, not as a commercial photographer but simply to document my journey as a photographer and to share my journey (which consists of mediocrity at the moment) I can say with my hand on heart, when it comes to taking the advice of someone who knows..... This is it! Brutal, down to earth, honest...... absolute gold dust! and when it comes to you tube........... It doesn't get better than this. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Wow! You made me realize that maybe photographers need to get someone who specializes in building website 😂. Also, photographers don’t seem to want to commit to one discipline of photography. I fight with this myself. When we think about photography as a business, we can’t be Walmart or Amazon and sell everything, we have to be the specialist in 1 discipline of photography. If we “think” we are great a more than one discipline then we need more than one website/business. Thank you very much for this video. I just recently, before watching this video, took my website down because I had too many disciplines (portraits, maturity, product and event photography). Thanks for the confirmation.

Hey Scott. Thank you for reviewing my website. Maru&Gwen is me (Maru) and Gwen, my wife as she is a makeup artist and my shooting partner. As for the reservation thing, it was exceptional promotional function, allowing new face models and actors to book a quick portrait session only on Mondays.

This was truly informative. Skills be asleep right now and hide eye opener as I watched all of this. Subscribed because of this. as painful as the harsh straightforward comments are, they are needed because many times we baby the things we do and don’t progress. I agree with others that I could watch countless hours of you reviewing portfolios, but that would be a waste of time as I should continue shooting more.

This is great advice, if you live an area like London, with loads of people. Many do not, so if you specialize on one thing only, and only advertize that, many are probably afraid they will not make enough money. In city of a million + people there will always be enough interest for a dedicated photographer who does this one thing and does that really well but I also am certain in more rural areas, doing at least a couple of things well enough is probably what will pay people's bills. Just my thoughts and experience as someone who does not live in a metropolitan area.

Thanks a lot for feedback, nail on the head, not really a fashion photographer or a food/drink - they're just what I get work doing. What a great insight into the way clients think and how little time we've got to get the message across about what we do. The biggest takeaway for me from this video is to define very clearly what it is I do; make it very specific and focus on that 1 thing. Anything else needs a separate website and separate branding.

Very helpful Scott. Figure out what you're good at then do a simple site with 3 things for people to choose from - Portfolio, About, Contact Us with a phone number displayed. I winced everytime you saw the ones who weren't specific in what they do. I struggle with this from the joy of shooting and sharing, thanks for the reminder from a client perspective. You don't go to an ice cream shop to buy a hammer.

Scott (and all) I have an important question: how do you deal with the issue of not turning down work? As someone who can "do everything," you keep saying "No one wants to hire someone who does everything." Understood. However, the grand majority of my clients are people that know "you did this website, or this shoot or this art--can you do something for me?" And I'm sorry, but when someone comes to me with a job, its harder now than ever to say no to additional income. How do you deal with the issue of not turning down work? I think thats why people have so many forms of photog on their site--they know they CAN do this, so why turn down the additional income? Do you have a dif site for each? I do not feel comfortable just cutting out an entire income stream from my portfolio when I still rely on it to make ends meet. If say that guy who was shooting commercial work and families--if they wanted to still shoot families do they do that secretly? Or do you just have to give up one of your income streams or even passions in order to progress in your career? Thank you.
@natsmaria Жыл бұрын
I'd agree with you! I am incredibly passionate about photography and have recently started getting into videography too. I've always shot portraits, and I studied fashion photography as a degree. I've recently started doing weddings, and I've got a lot of experience shooting commercial work & other events... With my website design, I've tried to make everything as simple as possible, however, after watching this video it's made me question, is it too complicated for my clients? The only solution here would probably be to create separate websites. For me, I would separate photography & videography. You could create a welcome page, with the option to go to either site, maybe split your work into two, so cooperate, commercial & events, and then portraits & weddings, for example. I'm testing the waters within the creative industry and still figuring out what I want to do. But if we make it easy for our clients to navigate and understand what we do, I don't see how this can effect us getting work. It makes me think, is it bad being passionate about creating different things? Food for thought. I wouldn't cut out an entire part of your portfolio. Especially if it's worth keeping for financial reasons.

Late comment but I've only just found your channel. Any who.... Is it just me or are people buying cameras shooting a ton of various genres, doing quick edits on LR and then deciding "I know, I'm gonna make a website and say I'm a pro" there are more wedding photographers in my village than lamp posts but the lampposts are better at controlling light than the wedding photographers. I don't get it. There were some really talented people with websites in your video that need to just hone in on a particular genre and they would be onto a winner. Sadly Instagram and KZbin etc has made a lot of over night pro photographers and it's scary how many dare charge for their poor services when they bought their camera the week before. I know I sound harsh but it's true.
