🇳🇱 Living in Amsterdam Pros and Cons 🇳🇱
Ever wondered what it is like to live in Amsterdam / The Netherlands?
Living in The Netherlands as an expat has been one of the best experiences in my life. There are so many benefits to living in The Netherlands/Amsterdam, like the work-life balance, biking everywhere, the country itself... Of course there are also some cons, weather being the worst one for me!
If you're moving to The Netherlands, I hope this video helps you and made you more excited to come here. Please let me know if you have any questions at all! I'd be more than happy to help my fellow expats.
Check out my blog post about the Pro's and Con's of Living in The Netherlands: beatrizpaula.com/pros-and-con...
Chapters:

✨ABOUT ME
Hey there, I'm Beatriz, a 26 year old Portuguese girl!
In 2019 I moved to Amsterdam, from sunny Lisbon, after landing a job in the city of the canals. A year and many adventures later, I decided to start writing about my endeavors in Amsterdam, my traveling adventures and more personal stories I believe are worth sharing.
In 2021, I decided to create this KZbin channel to help my fellow expats that are considering moving to Amsterdam or The Netherlands. Moving can be really tough, so I'm here to help you out and make your life easier!

There are a lot of sunny days yearly in Amsterdam and the nicest springs and summers with cool breeze and fresh air. Each season has something charming to it and if you are lucky to see snow and frozen canals, Amsterdam is the prettiest city ever.

The price of the flowers is low 😅 really !!. Weather is not so bad. Raining very little 10 to 20 min max and not every day. House situation is extremely bad. And bringing cookies 🍪 to strangers in strange situation , not a good idea to me. Thank you for you honesty here, no you will never be a friend of a dutch person in Amsterdam. The relationships with people in Amsterdam are extremely superficial and money interested. Good video.

I can relate to the cons. The weather is bad and even on any given day, you feel there is 4 types of weather. Real estate is really bad at the moment, the government thinks we need to build a city as large as Amsterdam within 10 years. There are already 100.000 houses short nationwide. And it's going up quick. Making friends is a tough one as well. I'm Dutch and lives in Lisboa for the past 5 years. I got around with expats more than the locals. Love the video

That’s basically all Northern Europe though. One of my favourite quirks though is, from being in Ireland, it rains like a monsoon all the time in Ireland, yet NOBODY seems to have any rain gear 😂 nobody carries umbrellas or rain jackets. They just wear whatever they were wearing. Maybe they have just given up trying to fight it, rain will always get you, but I thought that was a funny quirk

In the Netherlands, the tax is so high that the government does not build new cities. It is undoubtedly a sign of corruption and greed.

The only thing that might be a problem for us if we decided to move to Amsterdam would be the fact that houses are SO expensive. Like worse than the Virgin Islands expensive. The weather can be dealt with assuming you don't mind getting wet every now and then.

I agree. It's almost impossible to become friends with a dutchie, but when you have one you have a friend for life. Nevertheless we make a distinction between "friend" and :aquintance". Living in Amsterdam is not the same as living in the Netherlands. The weather in the coastal provinces is quite different from the weather in the southern and eastern provinces. House pricing in the Netherlands are high but in Amsterdam they are insane. Learn Dutch
@carinalindberg7377

Isn't that true for wherever you live, though? Life is different in a small village in Sweden compared to Stockholm, and it's different in Stockholm than it is on Gothenburg, and it's different in the south compared to southeast, mid, north, west and so on. It's also different living in one neighborhood compared the neighborhood down the road no matter where you live. Amsterdam IS in the Netherlands and therefore it IS the same as living in the Netherlands just as much as it is living in any other part of the country, because it IS in the Netherlands. I'm moving there in a few months and even though I already knew that not many Dutch people like Amsterdam, but I'm actually quite surprised by all the comments I'm seeing from the Dutch ignoring the fact that Amsterdam is part of the Netherlands. Crazy because it's an amazingly beautiful, cool and welcoming city, and apparently a lot of people think so. I'm grateful for it, though, leaves more room for the rest of us who love it. 🥰🙏💃

i can agree on most things but rental prices are (of course) high in Amsterdam, its a expensive city, its cheaper in other cities. overall living here is not cheap but minimal wage is also high here and even with bare minimum income you can be comfortable, have a nice job and have a great work-life balance. payed vacation days and even vacation money (almost a whole monthly income extra) every year and some companies even pay out a 13th month (not many but they are there), in my opinion many employers treat employees very well.

3:50 food from everywhere, except from the Netherlands 🤣 6:00 we need rain, remember Amsterdam is a swamp and without rain the ground dries up, the wooden poles the houses are built on, start rotting and the houses would collaps. In 2021 we are still not at the needed ground waterlevel that is needed after the dry summers of ‘18-‘20. Hence the water society taxation to organize water management. The tax I’m more than willing to pay😉

As a Dutch person, having worked with a lot of international people; I think your observation about making Dutch friends is a bit off. I don’t think there is a lot of Dutchies that care about speaking Dutch because, as you probably noticed everybody speaks English here. What we Dutchies are not, is spontaneous; we plan ahead a lot. So suggesting to go for dinner tonight, probably clashes with existing plans. Suggest to do an activity in the future and you’ll have more success. Have fun!

I would choose another country :). I grew up in the Netherlands and lived in Amsterdam and The Hague as well. People are really rude and harsh, always in a rush and cranky and the weather is gray all year round. The Netherlands is also the most crowded country in Europe and everything is always busy and full of people everywhere. Everything is extremely expensive (gas water light rent etc)

Hi dear I am dutch and glad the see that you like my country ,however i will the give you some coments . The weather, You know the weather is perfect for ower country the flowers and all the green products growing fast so whe are the biggest exporter from europe of all this products. Also the dutch people do"nt like high temperature and whe have not dangerous fire storms like Portugal. The price of houses in Amsterdam. Is the fould of expats ,she pay all what the landlord ask , so you want you can found much cheaper in the vilage outsite Amsterdam and in the vilage its much easy the make contacts with the locals. My advices is lave Amsterdam and go live in the province.

Do you happen to know whu dutch people hold on to their old group of friends rather than making new ones? I find that really interesting and i think it's totally true when i think about my own life and friends as a Dutchie!

@mariadebake5483
@mariadebake5483 3 жыл бұрын
Well as a dutchie I think it has to do with the facts that first, we are very loyal so the friends we make during our school days remain friends for life. Second, we don't feel the need to have many many friends so the friends from our school days are sufficient for us. We don't really need to have more. We are very much family-oriented so family and friends together are enough for us. Nevertheless you can become aquintances with dutch people so you sometimes go out together with others or drink coffee somewhere and things like that

@@sophiablass3379 It isn't that complicated Sophia, but sadly today it seems that if a person doesn't feel offended he/she/it doesn't get full attention.
