The only thing I would point out is that, as shown in Troy's videos, the sweeping technique YJM uses is different in terms of up/downs. At 8.59 you go D-U-U-D-D and if I'm not mistaken, he goes U-U-D-D-D (with downslanting), which is a completely different technique.

You're probably right on that one! I think the video I did on his sweeps corrected that- kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqHYp4pmebiKaJI but it's been a long time since I made that one, so could very well be mistaken!

Great lesson but I would like to point out although they can be adapted many of theses licks follow a particular chord type & progression, tempo, key and so can be awkward to just slot in a different song so can be a bit limited without adapting them and having an understanding of chord/scale relationships. But they give you some great ideas and techniques on YJM's style. Put it another way for the layman with limited guitar chord/scale theory it can be awkward to add a bit of Malmsteen flavor to your cover of for example, Journeys, Separate ways just off the bat of these licks especially as some follow a particular chord progress.
@JbfMusicGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, totally spot on! I know the theory won't land with a lot of players, or will put them off, so for me it's a case of trying to cover the bases and explain it, without getting too sidetracked :)

JBF MUSIC & GUITAR, can you make a video showing "Nylon string chords" yngwie plays on his Acoustic Nylon string guitar because he uses diminished chords and classical bach slash chords but only uses them on his Acoustic Nylon guitar songs that are intros like in dark stars intro, evil eyes acoustic guitar into, etc and others songs he uses acoustic nylon string guitar parts.
@uziquattro10834 жыл бұрын
for some reason that single string pedal riffs are messing me up. the 2 string one makes it easier to chunk it all for me for some reason! more practice on this one for me i suppose! this is a great vid man!
@JbfMusicGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, really appreciate that :) Hmm, could be a few things- Make sure you're not holding the strings down too hard (This is a really good exercise for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKOlmoGAYrlgrtE) Or, anchoring your hand if it needs to move- it gets a bit strechty! That part is in 6/8, so the timeshift might throw you off a bit? Let me know if any of that helps? If not, still let me know and I'll have a think about other possible hurdles! But yeah, any excuse to practice is good in my book :D

At a guess it's probably a Marshall Amp, 4x12 cab, quite possibly with a tube screamer of other boost in front of it? I probably put the mids up a bit say 6/7 and dropped the treble and bass to maybe 4 or something? I'm not sure I saved the patch, so can't be entirely sure though!

He'll use similar ideas, sequences or licks etc. going up the fretboard (ascending) and going down the fretboard (descending). Hopefully that makes sense?

For some reason the harmonic and melodic minor scales style he uses is so much easier to play fast and she'd through then pentatonic ones. Which most consider easier. Is there a reason for this
@JbfMusicGuitar4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, but I'd guess it's to do with how the shapes connect- generally not too many jumps or stretches an you can position shift a bit more naturally. You've got more notes on each string than pentatonic, so there's more choice for picking different notes on same string. Those are my best guesses anyway! Do you reckon they might play a role?

@JbfMusicGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Don't see why not! If you have a drive pedal that tightens up the low end, should get you in the ballpark for a Malmsteen tone. Having said that, his tone has been a lot bassier in the last 10-20 years

Hey man, I don't much about Michael Romeo's playing, would take a fair while to learn his songs, analyse his playing, create licks going over his different techniques and turn that into a lesson, so I doubt I'll make that any time soon! Will let you know if I do though :)

I think it's his signature guitar, his YJM marshals and his signature overdrive pedal, these are the rig rundowns I used (they're in that pinned comment): Rig Run Downs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lanYaIptrKh1h9k (2017) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHXLf6hmrZuEnbs (2011) This might be worth a look as well: equipboard.com/pros/yngwie-malmsteen. I don't know what settings he uses, but live he's got quite a bright sound; a maple fretboard and boosting the highs and mids will help with that, also not as much gain as you might think :)
@furryz6666 жыл бұрын
This is a good basic Malmsteen lesson, well done, but I disagree on the overproduced over analyzed and overly pretentious“Troy G” vids his rules are quite silly frankly but will seem to work for some who practice the cheesy TG method the key word here is “practice” there is no golden rule and most seasoned shredders have been playing the neo-classical styles of Malmsteen and many others using any technique that works, including alternate picking, legato, hybrid, “notes from no where” or any combination of these with very convincing results..40+ years of guitar- studio, touring and instruction here brother, Troy is a tool not a great teacher reference but he makes pretty videos, much better off with Rick Graham or if Malmsteen is your thing “Panos” could be his Greek sonic twin, peace

Thanks, yeah trying get some helpful tips across, but keep it fairly snappy! Fair enough man, I've found the two way pick slanting to be a huge help; I'm able to play stuff I never could have done before. Similarly, by being aware of this, my economy picking had gotten better as well. My main aim was to improve consistency; still a work in progress, but when isn't it with guitar, eh! Understandably he's not everyone's cup of tea, and you'e quite right there are lots of ways to play the same lick- just thought it was worth highlighting Malmsteen's approach for anyone who might take to it and find that method useful :)
@marcusheawood85606 жыл бұрын
Troys analysis of picking strategies goes deep but if you only take what you need from it then your technique will improve dramatically very quickly, like most guitar players my left hand facility greatly exceeded my right hand ability, Troys work has helped me to restore some balance in my fast playing. Pedagogy sucks but it's a necessary evil.
@JbfMusicGuitar6 жыл бұрын
Yeah totally! To be fair, Furryz had a really good point of actually practicing- it's pretty easy to just watch videos and not apply it, I know I do that from time to time. Although, from your post I'd wager you'll well aware of this potential pitfall :)

@johnp.johnson15419 ай бұрын
*Yngwie DOES NOT SWEEP.* Yngwie's technique is economy picking of alt picking plus pull-offs, hammer-ons, and raking, which is maintaining pick direction sometimes from string-to-string but never more than an additional string. Sweep picking means playing at least an entire chord (3 tones) arpeggio in one direction over three strings. One can play a tetrad or pentrad over 4 or 5 strings. The minimum though is always three strings and a triad (chord). Excellent vid otherwise.

I'm not too sure to be honest, one of the tutors where I studied had a support slot with Yngwie's band years ago- I have a vague memory of him saying the action was a lot higher than he thought it would be. He had a go on Yngwie's guitar and found it a bit tricky to play, which Malmsteen found rather amusing :)
