to be totally honest, it sounded worse than i expected! i understand that it's a phone recording, but the mouth sounds were insane, and the s's/t's were so harsh and weird it can't really be fixed with mixing. my opinion is... get SM57's if you don't have much money and record everything with these.

Better good music recorded on field recorder than bad music recorded on the most appropriate equipment. If the music is boring me it doesn't matter too much how it's recorded. That's how I feel about it.

4:11 There's a lot of good information in this video to digest, but the first step has already taught me an important lesson. In the past when I've tried to denoise vocals, I chucked them into audacity and butchered them with the noise removal effect in such a way that there was no noise floor whatsoever. But as shown in the video, it makes much more sense to use a gentle denoiser, then manually cut the silent parts, otherwise you end up chopping a bunch of important frequencies out of the vocals in a way that leaves them sounding hollow. No amount of post processing can fix this. Thanks David for the tutorials, it really helps to see the process step-by-step, and thanks Bella for providing great source material

Wow! That was interesting! As you said, it didnt sound horrible. But I could hear a couple examples of it "falling apart" once processing started. Regardless, watching you add your effects on the fly was awesome! Very inspiring. Now I cant wait to get home to my studio.😂 Excellent video bro!

This was really fun to watch Bella is an amazing singer, was not expecting that voice hahaha Also, great mixing I especially loved your creative use of effects I’m curious though: The original audio file from the voice memo, was it an m4a or did you record lossless? It’s just interesting to me how I could hear the audio start to fall apart as it was being processed and it got me wondering if the original file was lossless to begin with…🤔

That's a lot better than I imagined and you did great with the shaping of it. It's not a U47 😜 but for a Pop song that doesn't need too much body and freq info it works... Me at my next gig - Artist - "What kind of Producer are you, you forgot the mics..." Me - "Don't worry guys, I got this..." 😅

Cool! I agree this ain't bad, but not the best. Especially the dynamics were really too inconsistent - would it have been a bad idea to run them into a distressor to transparently equalize the volume?

You are really a master, personally I prefer a minimalistico approach, less is more. After a cleaning phase pass the correttive one and finally touch to colouring, only three different revs/delay. For example curious you use pitch correction in the middle and not at the start, after cleaning. I also thought You used Lava to vitual change mic 😊anyway the result Is great, miracle..and Bella voice Is very particolar...💪
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 27 күн бұрын
Thank you 🙏 I used it in the middle because I really go by instinct, and if something worries me (in this case harshness) I want at least to take a pass at that first. I already know the pitch correction is not gonna affect that and the other way around. But no other reason than that's where my thoughts went to first

Hi David, I've seen people saying that when we have such wide dynamic range in a vocal recording it's a good practice to manually chop the recording and adjust gain in every clip to make it more consistent, it's very time consuming but is it something you would recommend?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 27 күн бұрын
It's not really time consuming (people are lazy) but I don't like it. You can hear the noise floor/signal changing when you do that. If a singer has a wide dynamic range, you record in blocks and set the gain for each block. That of course, if you don't have analog gear because if you do you just compress on the way in.
@soulofwaves
@soulofwaves 27 күн бұрын
@@mixbustv thanks, makes sense, with no analog gear then would be better to stick to automation to control the dynamic range (appart from the processing of course)?
