Celia Oreja-Guevara, MD, PhD, University Hospital San Carlos, Madrid, Spain, outlines her research looking into postpartum disease activity in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The prospective, longitudinal study followed patients from before pregnancy to one year after delivery. When looking at factors influencing postpartum activity, relapse history, number of relapses, and gadolinium-enhancing lesions were found to be significant. The team tested a proactive strategy designed to reduce postpartum relapses, in which treatment was restarted within 2 weeks of delivery in patients with active disease or poor prognostic factors. In other patients, an MRI was conducted two months after delivery and if new lesions were detected, patients were started on treatment. With these methods, they have achieved post-delivery relapse rate of just 7%. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
