Luca Baldelli, MD, PhD, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy, discusses rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a parasomnia characterized by the absence of muscle atonia during REM sleep, causing patients to physically act out their dreams. Not only can this result in injury to patients, RBD is a very strong feature of prodromal synucleinopathy, with an overall phenoconversion rate of 6-8% per year. Biomarkers to determine which patients will phenoconvert to a centralized α-synucleinopathy are important in the context of early diagnosis of those disorders, so that disease-modifying therapies can be most effective. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
