I had grown up seeing so many videos of one of the biggest classics of Norway, the Lower Rauma. Finally getting the chance to experience it was unreal and it was everything I could have imagined, and more. I not only ended up getting the 3rd descent of Brennenfossen which is an ultra stout that Bren first descented in 2016. I also ended up deciding to run Flemmingsfossen which is one of the most intimidating drops I have done as it has a very hard lip to line up, as well as only about a 20ft window where the drop doesn't land on rocks. It was one hell of a day and I definitely can't wait to get back to it, although I don't think I will be running those 2 stouts again.

You and Nouria Newman keep me muttering bad words the most during these vids. I liked how your pantomime of the moves matched the actual run. Mine hardly ever do, heh heh.

Dane: Another Epic session 👍👍👍. Loved those complicated drops and slides. Also loved your composed planning and paddling above the drops followed by your elation below. Gotta love adrenaline... and arriving at a takeout injury free, and for that matter, here’s to not having a post paddle cold one that tastes of stale sweat and neoprene. thanks for sharing.

It's amazing to watch the evolution of paddling over the last 45 years. A question from an old class III+ open boater: in water that big (Brennenfossen as well as other class 5+ stuff I've watched you run) how can you know where you are and therefore what you should be doing? Just doesn't seem like you can see well enough to know whether you're on line.
@danejacksonkayak
@danejacksonkayak 3 жыл бұрын
The way to keep yourself on line is to give yourself markers to follow all the way down a rapid, or the line up for something big. Brennenfossen isn't too bad because its such a narrow entrance. But something like Flemingsfossen, the big drop at the end. That was actually a tough one because there is not a very big margin for error with that one. In a short version for that drop, and just running bigger, longer whitewater in general. My first marker was to cut it close to that rock in the middle, and paddle out the slow water behind it. Then next marker was the boily wave, that had the curler fading left to right off of it. I knew that I wanted to be right where that curler met the wave. Though that's just a few markers, it's always good to give yourself things to follow to align yourself where you plan on being. Ballparking it rarely works because things always look different once you are in your boat. So waves, rocks, holes, curlers, etc. There are lots of things you can use to give yourself a point A to point B plan.

@@danejacksonkayak Thanks for that advice. The long crazy wave (and hole) fields in some of the other vids are just mind boggling from the go pro, but scouting from the bank may illuminate markers that I can't see. That ferry across to the left on Flemingsfossen is a pretty intense/high stakes effort, eh!?!

If you are too far right you can land on the shelf of rocks. If you are too far left the drop becomes shallow as well. You only have that about 20ft kicker window where it’s safe. Plenty of people have gotten hurt there
