솔직히 여태까지 이호원의 보컬에 대해 진지하게 생각해본 적이 없었다. 7명의 무대에서 느껴지는 이호원의 보컬은 콧소리로 인해 답답하게 들려왔고, 굳이 대중들에게나 평론가에게나 실력이 입증된, 탄탄한 보컬이 있는데 랩퍼가 노래 연습을 열심히, 독하게 해서 좀 나은 소리를 낸다는 이유로 보컬을 하는 것도 의문스럽게 여겨졌다. 그런데 이 커버곡은 그랬던 지금까지의 내 생각을 전부 부숴버렸다. 이호원의 보컬은 생각보다 답답하지 않았고, 생각보다 음정박자를 가지고 놀 수 있었으며, 생각보다 더 적절한 농도로 감정을 표현할 줄 알았다. 적어도 그저 보컬에 참여하는 건 아니라는 것을 너무나 명백하게 느낄 수 있었다. 어쩌면, 이호원은 김성규나 남우현과 같은 독보적인 보컬에 묻혀 상대적으로 평가절하 당했던 것은 아닐지, 내가 그러고 있었던 것은 아닐지 반성하게 되었다. 이호원의 가수에 대한 열정은 인피니트에 관심없기 전부터 알고 있었다. 꿈을 위해 학교까지 중퇴하고 상경해 무작정 오디션을 보는 것은 보통의 각오와 의지만으로는 못하는 것이니까. 이 커버곡은 그랬던 이호원이, 자신이 여태까지 쌓아온 것을 보여주는 느낌이다. 이렇게나 나는 노력했고, 또 성장했어요. 하고 말하는 것 같이. 여전히 보컬로써 부족한 점은 물론 있다. 호흡이 부족한 점이라거나. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고, 이 커버곡은 분명히 좋다. 잘했다. 앞으로 이호원은 자신의 욕심만큼, 꾸준히 발전하고, 더 나은 모습을 보여줄 것이다. 그런 확신이 들었다. 보컬로써의 이호원, 응원한다.
