Problematic F1 Cars - 2023 Mclaren MCL60

First of all, thank you everybody for 10,000 subscribers! You're all the best.
Mclaren has had one of the craziest mid-season development curves we've ever seen in Formula 1. From 17 points in the first 7 races to 160 in the last 7 races, I wanted to dive in and try and piece together how they've done it.
During pre-season testing for the 2023 season Mclaren were clearly in big trouble. Slow in the high speed corners, slow on the straights and slow to get on the power. And come the first race of the season in Bahrain, we’d see one Mclaren DNF and the other finish dead last.
Which makes it even more insane that we've seen them make the comeback that they have.

Both Ferrari and Mercedes keep talking about how they’ll turn it around…eventually. But McLaren actually put their money where their mouth is. You should’ve mentioned how Mika Hakkinen predicted this would happen !!

As you say, I think the core concept of the car was sound - it's telling that with a few upgrades so much pace was unlocked, they're definitely the team to watch next year. Regarding Aston Martin... I believe they will finish behind McLaren this year. Lawrence Stroll must surely recognize that if he wants the team to be serious contenders, they need another driver of or near Fernando's level.

It's not a popular take but Lance isn't bad. Look at his first half of the season. It was very solid and he was doing the job he needed to. The issues come from after the summer break. For some unknown reason, he can't re-find his early season mojo. He's never been a brilliant qualifier but he's having a really rough time of it and his frustration tells you he isn't sure why. Having said that, he was on course for points in Japan and Qatar before his rear wing took some damage and he had to retire for safety reasons in Suzuka and in Losail, he picked up two track limits penalties because he was on the verge of passing out and was half blind for the last few laps. His race pace is coming back but he needs to figure out why the quali deficit is so big. He doesn't have to get Q3. Q2 would realistically be enough given where the car's general pace has gone. Lance's race sense can get him up 4-5 positions. It's just no good if he keeps qualifying 16th or 17th

@@stinkyroadhog1347this is actually a very good point, although people are not expecting him to bring Alonso level performance, that's unrealistic, and stupid, only people on Alonso's level are Max and Lewis, and coincidentally, they're the only 3 champions on the grid. What people are expecting from him is just, atleast be one step behind Alonso, not 5

lol I am a Sergio fan ever since going back and watching the 2012 season, where he almost beat Alonzo in one of the early races. he’s a scrappy guy, but I have to agree that McLaren being competitive and Oscar being right up there with Norris really puts the pressure on him as it shows how competitive McLaren will be next year with what is one of the top driver pairings on the grid. If they stay on this trajectory, Red Bull won’t be able to defend their title with just Max like they have this year

Two things: 1. Don't remember exactly who said (either Zak or someone else from McLaren) at the start of the season that (and you alluded to this, but I want to emphasize this) the "right" version of McLaren would come out around Austria. Norris knew, Piastri knew, everyone at McLaren knew that they would be struggling at the start. Sure, I didn't expect McLaren to jump up as much as they did, but we were told that McLaren would get much better during the season. After (I think Bahrain) Zak said "Our goal is still to finish top 4 in the constructor championship". 2. McLaren said at the beginning of last year that their main aim is 2024 and beyond. So let's hope that this car is the corner stone to wins and championships.

The papaya orange is a historic colour for the team. It was introduced in 1967 after Teddy Mayer thought that the colour would stand out on TV screens, and was used by McLaren first in Can-Am (until they pulled out in 1973), in F1 (from 1968 until 1972, then as a minor colour for the following couple of years until Marlboro started sponsoring the team), and USAC (1970-'76) to a fair bit of success, particularly in Can-Am and USAC. Afterwards, papaya was only really used on road cars and occasionally in F1 testing as an interim livery, such as in 1997 and 2006. It was seen on a racing car again in a racing capacity when Fernando Alonso did the 2017 Indy 500 (yes the F1 car that year was orange but it wasn't papaya), and the team brought it back to F1 in 2018.

Nobody would say I support Liverpool and Chelsea or Miami Dolphins and Patriots, etc. No matter what sport, you support a single team. You might have teams you root for but you don't support them as it is a massive different in liking and supporting.
