My N.Chromatus molted during shipping and I had to basically complete the molting process for her. It was a long process that took me a solid couple of hours (at 1am, because that is when someone messaged me saying that I need to act ASAP), bearing in mind this was like my 5th tarantula, so my experience was completely limited. My point is, finding information on how to deal with certain issues regarding tarantulas is basically impossible as it varies from species to species, so I was following advice from people who had never experienced what I had to deal with, yet some people (looking at you social media freaks who can never be wrong) seem to think that they know everything when that is objectively false, we don't know enough about tarantulas as a whole for ANYONE to be calling themselves a tarantula guru (or w/e they want people to think they are). For the record, during my emergency operation, she lost 4 legs (they were twisted when I removed her from the sling pot she arrived, not much I could really do as a beginner), all of which have grown back. The common genus' tarantulas you see (Brachypelma, Nhandu, Tlitocatl, Aphonopelma, etc) are extremely hardy and that is precisely why they are common tarantulas, because they can adapt to pretty much any situation. I believe that pulling the carapace was no cause for concern, and anyone who has had to deal with a bad molt will probably agree, maybe you could have moistened the carapace with some warm water and a qtip/cotton bud as I had to, but she seems to be OK so I guess it doesn't really matter in this instance.

My Chilobrachys sp Kaeng Krachan recently perished during her moult. Humidity was fine, she had fed a couple of days before. For some reason she decided to turn mid-moult, as it seems, and her abdominal skin (which hadn't detached properly) cut off circulation. Or so I think. Really weird situation. These things happen and people will always have an opinion about it, especially in your case because you have a platform. Nobody knows your spider better than you though. Thanks Petko.

A slightly stuck carapace isn't too bad, you could also easily remove it. Paul on the other hand had quite a rough time, but he's a fighter. I tend to raise the humidity in the enclosure, when I notice a T in premolt. I like to use waterbowls, it gives me a peace of mind and there are actually some spiders using it. But I don't think a bad molt only happens because of "lack of waterbowls", there are plenty more reasons. Maybe Paul's bump is a illness and that's why he can't molt properly? Don't get yourself frustrated by some smartasses, you know your T's better than them.

Late to the video, but I hypothesize this could be a circulation issue 🤔 when they pump a layer of hemolymph between their new and old exoskeleton, there might be areas they can't circulate well and cause molting issues. Which could also be related to humidity levels lowering hemolymph volumn. But as we know, some of us humans have crummy blood circulation regardless of how much water we drink. I imagine it must be similar in spiders.

Maybe bringing up the humidity when you notice tarantula in a pre-molt for a more successful molt would help.
@calliew3115 ай бұрын
Possibly, but since the water needs to be ingested before molting, bringing up the humidity prob wouldn't help. It's the inner moisture that helps the exoskeleton slip off. However, I do it, but that's because I live in a high altitude desert. the inner moisture they use to slip out of their old exoskeleton, in my un-expert opinion, dries out quicker here than it does in places with higher humidity, so I raise the humidity so they don't dry out before they've completed their molt.

Not to be negative, but just to provide an alternative idea, is it possible that because the glass is open, it caused the humidity to drop a little? that's why the carapace was stuck? This was one of the rare time you caught and recorded them molting that was different from the previous countless other molts. (Just a random guy on the internet with no knowledge of husbandry for these creatures) Don't worry about the negativity. It's the internet. You'll always have someone who says random mean things. Another random thought: Could the sprinkling of hairs keep the web from sticking to the carapace when they turn upside down?

As someone who owns about the same amount of tarantulas as petko, i mist my Ts regularly, that being said all my adults and juveniles have a water dish because i have seen them countless times drinking from them. If you have such a large following and make great money for posting your tarantula content, then why not give them a water dish. One of the few T owners on social media that doesn’t provide them with water. Why be so stubborn about not doing it? If they bury it and you notice it, dig it out and refill it. If they are heavy webbers make little drinking puddles in their webs. Simply misting doesnt necessarily get keep them hydrated. Why take the risk. 9 years or 50 years experience, if you can eliminate one risk to your Ts health then why not do it? This is the issue many keepers have. That being said i still enjoy your content, been watching your channel since you been feeding your little ones in your little room off that shelf when you only had a handful of tarantulas. Just a friendly advice and help to quiet the haters and even gain them as fans.

Because he likes the enclosures to look natural, and water dishes don't look like they belong. Or, that was his reasoning, along with the fact that they get enough moisture from their food. But I agree with you, we are keeping these Ts as pets, no there aren't water dishes in nature, but we are supposed to be giving them a better life than nature. All of mine get dishes, but I live in Nevada and misting isn't enough, I need dishes and misting.

Misting dosent add high humidity all the time which some tarantula needs. Its a commen mistake many keepers do.. waterbowl and wet moss provides a constant humidity that the tarantula needs.
@caitchri24265 ай бұрын
Before we jump to conclusions: we need to ask: What climate does Petko live in? What is the natural humidity for his area? What is the typical humidity of his Dark Den? (A room of misted tarantulas and huge terrariums must be more humid than most other houses.) How often is he misting? Is he using a humidity meter? How drafty and what temperature is his Dark Den? Does the soil mixture he use retain moisture well? Misting may work for him because of his other unique room qualities.
@darkmido60875 ай бұрын
Petko is from Croatia. Its a dry humidity country. Im pretty sure his Grammostola pulchra, which is a brazilien tarantula, dosent has the high humidity that it has in the wild in brazil. Same goes for many orther tarantula he has. Like the vietnam blue tarantula. It comes from a country which has 90% humidity. You dont get that high humidity by just misting. In most cases the tarantula will be just fine without that high humidity. But its a commen mistake many tarantula keepers has, to not think to much abort the humidity.. (p.s. you can see by your own eyes that these enclosure, are pretty dry)
