Interestingly, when a moth or butterfly goes through metamorphosis, enzymes basically digest the caterpillars tissue; brain, organs, skin become like a chunky stew of genetic material inside the pupa. Then the DNA inside the imaginal disc turns off the caterpillar genes and turns on the butterfly/moth genes. From this protein rich stew the discs create butterfly/moth cells that shape into the brain, wings, legs, etc. The process is amazing!

Also, in many caterpillars you can actually see the structures that will become the wings and other body parts beginning to take shape before they start spinning their cocoon. So cool!!

Well it's a myth that've been debunked a lot. Caterpillars already have a small version of what turns into butterfly tissues. Most of the caterpillar tissues indeed gets converted, but it doesnt turn into a soup before shaping the butterfly. It's just a process of slowly relocating the proteins and stuff.

Put them all together in that enclosure and the will soon mate and lay eggs, then you need to find leaves from a suitable host plant for the caterpillars, don't know how hard it will be though.

This species eats willow I believe, or some other common hardwood tree. I have found moths are less specific in food species than butterflies. They eat large families of tree leaves. Vs some butterflies only eat something crazy like one specific species of rare weed.

The white stuff isn't exactly Poop.... it is all the "unnecessary" parts to the caterpillar that was Metamorphosized out to make the Moths new body. So it is technically Caterpillar juices. Fun fact: all butterflies are Moths, but moths are Not Butterflies.

Male moffs have big fluffy antennas, yeah A few years ago there was a huge gorgeous North American luna moth on my neighbor's door... How they didn't scare it off I do not know. When they were all gone I went over and took the moth to my house so I could look at it without getting screamed at. It spent the day chilling on the front door, then flew away when night fell. I've never seen another one around here

I'm an artist who draws fantastical women with their favorite things. I have done a unicorn horned lady with butterflies, but I think I need to add mouths to the list. My unicorn lady is cracked (it's 3D art and what I used to make the 3D elements cracked after drying) so I have to fix it before posting, but if anyone's curious to see them, I do have Ketamine Kate (neon, alien) and Hydrangea bloom (hydrangea flowers, dwarven) are on my shorts ^-^ Anyway, you've inspired me to add mouths❤. I'll come watch this again for references ❤❤❤

Saw one of these outside my church last week. It was a very bright red female. I wanted her for my taxidermy collection so so bad. But my philosophy is to only take dead bugs, never kill. I would love one of your moths for my collection once they die a natural death.

They are beautiful creatures indeed but it's just a shame that they have only 1-3 weeks max. of life span if i remember correctly. If you want to experiment breeding with them, do it fast for some eggs.

I bought a Cecropia moth (in the same family as the Polyphemus) and made the mistake of taking the pupa out of the cocoon and then not putting it back into the cocoon. This caused one of her wings to not fully flatten out, so it was really wrinkly. I'm happy I have learned from this, but it was really sad to see. Just wanted to share that for anyone else who is interested in getting moth cocoons!

Also i know its a female because the antennae here 3:52 on that cocoon do you see the plates underneath? Those are the fuzzy parts of a males Anntena

Aw, how cute. I love such moths with their hairy booties, big eyes and bushy antennaes. It is just a pitty that they live for so short. Such long time to transform but little time to show the final beauty. I like them much better than butterflies and cannot understand people who find them creepy. But well, I also cannot imagine finding tarantulas creepy. Unlike for such, the males seem to be prettier than the females. The cocoon looked like a mummy and also funny that the attention of some spiders was caught by the moths. 😅 Please update us on how long the moths lived. I wonder whether there will be an observable difference between the males' and females' lifespans. Are they unable to eat or are they able to but don't have to?
