Most theme park management personnel never do their homework on things when it comes to ride implementation. It was always about getting the next "best", "must have ride" to compete with other parks for bragging rights and breaking records. B&R was still a fun coaster to ride when it was open and thankful to have been able ride both sides in my youth.

I was an employee in Rides during the time this opened. Everything in the video is 100% dead on and fully explains things that were not general knowledge even within the park at the time. There is one detail I'd like to share - it was definitely a power infrastructure issue that lead to the simultaneous launch problems. Management at the time was infamous among employees for keeping up with cosmetics but not underlying problems, and several members who worked in the area reported power issues no one officially connected to us at the time (but make total sense now). The draw was too high for the area, especially when you consider the proximity to Batman, which wasn't a huge power draw itself but had a pretty decent static power requirement for the entrance - the surges from B&R were overloading the area, it seems. This also didn't typically happen on the wet days where B:TR was not running, IIRC. AFAIK when Chiller was taken out, the necessary area improvements were made to prevent it from happening again. EDIT2: A further note for you - the Chiller tracks had ENORMOUS stress both at the launch and the tight rolls, resulting in rapid stress fracturing of coasters and track far above projections. This was exacerbated with a double launch, and is another reason I was given for why the coaster never functioned as intended. Employee days were the only positive about working here, and you are DEAD ON about that launch roar. You could clearly hear it from 2/3 of the park away. Trivia: A coworker held an unofficial record for consecutive rides on it (EDIT: 102, 51 each side); I chose GASM and did 76 runs that day.

The chillers will forever remain legendary. They were a staple of my youth. I only got to ride Robin in its final year when I was 10, but it its truly an experience I wish was still around. After the first week they put up signs saying to remove earrings as there was blood on the head rests. This ride was very loud and caused a lot of headaches. Many were surprised the ride lasted as long as it did - between ride issues, sound, injuries, and low attendance. Many would try it again when they heard they made an adjustment - to find the head rattle was still there. Didn't get to ride it once they went over to lap bars. That ride was a nightmare that almost killed the movie town area. Many used the other entrance area to enter and leave to ride batman. All the rides near it closed and even the shows near it suffered (including the show indoors).

This could have easily still been one of the top coasters at Six Flags Great Adventure if it was still around. I remember that I went to Six Flags Great Adventure back in 2001 when I was only 2 years old, and saw the ride go around. It looked like an insane roller coaster I wanted to go on in the future, but sadly I can't anymore. I think that Premier Rides really did not consider the design flaws this ride would have, regarding the forces, the LIMs being extremely unreliable, the power situation, and the valleying the coaster would have if the LIMs didn't boost the train up. But I don't necessary blame them in a bad way, since now they have learned from their lesson in the 90s, and have gone to build many more better and reliable coasters, even if they aren't as intense anymore. The LSMs on their rides now are much more easier to maintain and are not going to be as problematic as the LIMs were for most of their rides. I'm still surprised that many of their LIM launch coasters are still operational, since the LIMs are pretty scarce now if a Premier Rides coaster that used them needed them to be replaced. Plus I never knew that incline was 200 feet high :O

That is still one of the most intense coasters I got to ride. The Robin side was also fun even if it didn't have the roll. It really baffles me at how terrible Six Flags Great Adventure really is with planning. Between this, Zumanjaro, El Toro, Kingda Ka, and Green Lantern's now resurfacing issues of roughness you would think someone would get a clue... But oh well. I hope the Jersey Devil is successful but now with Corvid I doubt they will get a good return on investment for it.

I never liked that ride -- it was too short -- and the lines for it in '97 and '98 were several hours long! But don't forget it was built right across the path from the Haunted House that burned down and killed those people, so maybe it was cursed.
@YuukiTakemoto19963 жыл бұрын
No, it wasn't cursed. I am Japanese and believe in yokai, but I know it was due to piss-poor mechanics.
@JCBro-yg8vd4 жыл бұрын
They say this ride was also cursed by the land it took over, because of what had previously been on the plot: A haunted house known as The Haunted Castle (actually seventeen wooden trailers lashed together with lighting and effects to create a spooky maze). An attraction that burned to the ground in 1984, claiming a few lives in the process and nearly causing Great Adventure to close for good.

I rode Robin a number of times growing up, and even remember riding the Batman side at least once. I went to Six Flags at least 5-7 times a year most of my childhood, and the Chiller figures prominently in my memories. It was common that we'd show up to find them both closed, and be disappointed. Sometimes, we'd show up and find Robin open, and then the line was usually long and slow, but we would always wait anyway, my brother, my mom, and I usually. I remember waiting in the hot sun for like an hour, before waiting probably 30-45 more minutes in the indoor line, before finally sitting into Robin's train and enjoying the crazy thrill of this ride. I also remember that dramatic roar you're talking about. At least once, we showed up and were shocked to see Robin was closed but the Batman track was open! We couldn't believe it! We probably waited 2 full hours for it, but it was awesome, the top hat element was so forceful and frightening to me at age 9 or 10 probably. Batman was definitely the better track and it's a real shame that Robin was the more "reliable" side. I also remember showing up in 2001 or 02, when they exchanged those shoulder restraints with the lap bars + the foot bar. Then I REALLY loved this ride, as I no longer had to ride defensively and brace for the headbanging. It was absolutely thrilling, forceful, epic those last few years with the lap bar. I don't blame them one bit for removing such an unreliable money pit, but it's just such a shame they didn't do their homework to begin with to build a better ride at the start.

The park had an specific place where the roller coaster was supposed to be, but as it was never rebuilt, it's more likely that the park will be filling the place with new attractions (that's still unknown...) I'm a frequent visitor since I live in a city close to the park and I can assure you that the coaster was there for a few years (not really showing, but taking the train ride you could see the pieces of the roller coaster and some workers there).. Nowadays (I mean, about three weeks ago) the place where the Chiller was supposed to be remains with a warning saying NEW ATTRACTION SOON.. well, hoping to be something good at least...

Well, it looks like at the very least, Premier Rides has learned from it's past mistakes. West Coast racers appears to solve the double launch issues and the structure and track seem address the issues The Chiller had with the zero-g roll. Ice Breaker has no boosters on the spike and all propulsions is low. They also seem to have ditched LIMs for the less forceful LSM launch and simply bring the elements sooner to the slower moving trains to compensate for the initial burst of speed, then rely on multiple short bursts to bring the ride to full speed. Great Video, Ryan!

Rode it once in 2005, Robin side only. Coaster was pretty good, but the more entertaining part was the main operator in the station house. Before engaging the launch, he would either do a prank countdown "5, 4-" or feed into riders' insecurities "You guys look scared" and off the train went.

I’m from STL. Really grateful that the Mr Freeze is reliable. It was the top dog at our park before the boss

The zero g rolls on both tracks with lap bars were what made this my favorite marathon coaster in the park

When u played the sound of the coaster I got chills. I remember when this opened & closed lol. Ride was definitely barely ever working. I think I rode the Batman side once. On a rare day both tracks were running

I have such great memories of this ride, the theming and colors and the roar, and winding through the icy brick theme queue as the the roars go on… I went every year from 98 til close and only remember both sides open once or twice.. usually just one or the other. It was one of if not my favorite of the park included vs Medusa, nitro, and others, It was that good.

Funny about the problems with power outages. When I worked at Kings Island, there was a summer where the park had issues with its power grid. Flight of Fear and Backlot Stunt Coaster both had positions where they were constantly on the phone with each other, to ensure they did not launch at the same time. Doing so could have potentially caused sudden and mini power outages.

Had the honor of riding both dueling during its opening season. I remember batman being insane. It’d be awesome to see Premier reimagine it with their modern tech.

I started going to Six Flags yearly in 2008 so I don't think I ever got to see Chiller standing, but I always imagine how it would look if it was still standing today around all these new additions to that area of the park. I wish I could have road it before it was gone

My grandma lived about a mile from Six Flags America which had a Premier Rides Spaghetti bowl (Joker's Jinx) and you could hear the roar all throughout the summer when I was a kid

The chiller was the first coaster I rode at sfga back in 03, i was 10 years old and those were some good times

I rode it in the early 2000s, when it still had the original restraints. Let's just say I don't miss it. It's one of my cooler defunct credits, though.

I actually remember being there for two landmark moments for the ride. I was there with my parents back in 1997 or 1998 when it was first being tested. I remember the attempted dual launch took out the park's power and my parents and I were stuck at the top of the Ferris Wheel while they had to fix it. Secondly, I was also there in summer 2007, it may have even been the last day the ride operated. All 3 LIMs started smoking at the top of Robin's hill and the ride shut down hard. From my aunt and uncle who I was with that day, who went to the park at least twice a week during the summer, said it never ran again after that day.

4:04 This ride was heardly ever open. Is the most accurate discription ever. I managed to ride it once it was either 2003 or 2004. It was intense. I had a day where I rode Sceam Machine 6 times in a row once, my neck hurt more on that on ride on the Chiller

This ride always intrigued me, and got built a few times when i was playing Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 lol. Never got the chance to ride it though unfortunately. These LIM coasters were the glory days of premier rides, I wish we would see layouts like these coasters from them again.

I feel lucky to have ridden both sides of this multiple times in the late 90’s/early 00’s. It was a fun ride, though a bit rough. It usually left me with a headache. I never knew how problematic they were.

The park in Brazil had The Chiller demolished in 2018 after being in storage their for 6 years so Ryan was correct.

Was looking forward to this video after your Mr Freeze one. This was one of my favorite rides in the park when it was around. Preferred the Batman track when they both had the over the shoulder restraints and zero g rolls. But enjoyed the Robin track as well. Night rides were probably my favorite , and there was nothing like that roar when they were running. The only thing I could say that compared to the sound of this would be The Hulk before the re-tracking. Though this may have been louder even than that. It sucks it didn't work out.
@YuukiTakemoto19962 жыл бұрын
Green Lantern is pretty damn loud. And Superman at SFNE. Those two are really damn close to what The Chiller sounded like.
@stevemichael6527 ай бұрын
I remember being a little kid , 8-9 years old, and being petrified of the chiller. Between its menacing presence, the loud take offs and roar of the engine being heard from anywhere in the park, and people complaining about bloody ears, I was truly afraid of it. When you’re a kid, hearing “bloody ears” can mean anything. I thought there was a demon on the track that gave riders bloody ears.

I had the privilege of riding this coaster (Robin side only) when it had the barrel rolls back in 2005. It was an intense fun coaster. It's a shame they could never get it to operate correctly.

I love and miss this coaster. The first side I rode was the Robin side in 98, when it finally opened. I was 11 and didn’t even know what to expect from it. The theming, the launch, the roar was everything! We rode the Batman side afterwards, but I always chose Robin, afterward. I was a season pass holder, and The Chiller was always the first ride to go on when we got to the park. The wait was long but totally worth it. I loved chilling in the observatory to be deafened by the roar. It made a statement. When it lost the ots restraints, it got even better. I got off and felt slightly dizzy. I’d never been on a coaster that did that. I understand it was a great fail, but it was a great coaster.

The lap bars were installed on the Chiller in separate year. The lap bars were installed on Robin side first in the fall of 2001, then the lap bars were added to the Batman side in the summer of 2002.

Rode both sides in 97 when it opened for 3 days. Great ride but man it was painful. I had also ridden Steel Force the same day and felt both were great coasters for the time. Thanks for the memories, and great video.
