FYI regarding Copyright: Eiffel, who held the copyright for the tower, died in 1923, meaning it ran out 70 years later, in 1993. At this point, the likeness and design of the tower were allowed to enter the public domain, hence why you can find a replica, built in 1999, in Las Vegas. However, the lights on the Eiffel Tower were installed in 1985, by Pierre Bideau, meaning that any photo or video that shows the monument at a time when the lights are visible (ie, at night) is a violation of copyright law. There’s no general freedom of panorama in France, so a photo of the illuminated Eiffel Tower can be published only with permission. Better blur the images of the Eiffel Tower at night and re-upload the video. Don‘t want to get into trouble for something that stupid.

As you were Germanized during the years, it would be cool to hear about any culture shocks. ^^ One thing you immediately realize in paris is that a red light for pedestrian doesnt mean anything. Even old grandma who can barely walk, will try to rush over the street while the light is red. It also doesnt matter if that is right infront of a police car. About losing your mobile phone in Paris: I didnt even own a mobile phone until recently and was living close to paris for years: Paris is actually great for running around without proper maps / mobile phone, because you got maps everywhere. You got City maps, you got "History Maps", you got metro maps, and if you dont find anything else: You also got maps on the bus stations which are a bit hard to read. Getting lost is pretty much impossible (ofc if you don't remember where your hotel is, that's a whole different problem). These guys trying to sell you crap are extremely annoying and you can find them in multiple places. Another place I'd recommend is the Montmartre which is also located on a hill with a nice sight. But on the stairs you will likely find some dudes trying to sell you some wristbands, super aggressive.

@Ulrich.Bierwisch
@Ulrich.Bierwisch 2 жыл бұрын
@@V100-e5q This has changed in the last years. Since everybody has a smartphone a lot of the museums have learned that they can't prevent it anyway and that people want to take pictures and publish them on social media. As a result it is allowed in a lot places. You have to look at the rules in every place you visit. Thanks to the internet, it is possible to get the info pretty easy. The rules for the Louvre are: "You can take photos and videos in the permanent collections if they are for personal use. However, you are not allowed to use selfie sticks, flash or lighting. In the temporary exhibition galleries, it may be prohibited to take photos or videos of certain works."

Please don't compare. As a French who live since almost 20 years in Germany, it's quite insulting to compare Schokobrötchen to a real Pain au Chocolat, or Chocolatine as some people call it in south west area of France like Bordeaux or Toulouse. This is like comparing French and German beer, but the other way around. 😂 I only know a few German bakers around Frankfurt/Darmstadt who make it as it is done in France (or close to it) but then there are way more expensive. Already the Schokobrötchen from regular "Bäckerei" is most of the time more expensive than a Pain au Chocolat in France (except maybe in Paris since everything is expensive there). Nalf is 100% right. It doesn't look very nice (though the one he had was certainly an industrial one by the way it looked), but the taste of it is fantastic. This is the same with baguette. The ones sold in Germany are 99% of the time a bad copy of the French one in less tastier, less crispy, smaller and more expensive. There are some bakeries in Germany (most of the time specialized in french "Pains" and "Pâtisseries") that have excellent ones, but they sell it also 2 to 4 times the price you would pay for the same in France. But at least the offer good products. My daughter who is born and raised in Germany also prefer by far the french ones. In France, they have better ingredients for making the dough and the chocolate is always of better quality and has higher percentage of cacao. Check for example Valrhona chocolate brand, you will understand what I mean. The one who come after having tried that and tells me after that Lindt chocolate, or (worse) Milka chocolate brands are good deserve to be executed.😂
@Soussmeboules
@Soussmeboules 2 жыл бұрын
@@silkwesir1444 It is between the two, let say semi-industrial. I would say it comes from "La mie câline" or some shop like that. They make it almost like in bakery but with a dough that was frozen and not just prepared just before cooking as it should be. These kind of shops are called normally "Viennoiserie" in France, for legal reason, since they don't respect the full process of preparation of bread and bakeries as it should be for such fresh products. Non industrial ones are coming only from "Boulangerie" or "Boulangerie-Pâtisserie".

Paris is a very beautiful city, but it's also fairly homogenous in its style. Every street looks the same, every house is eerily similar, every café has the same general vibe. At least in the city center. And that's cool! But it's the polar opposite to some of the other major cities across the continent. Like, London looks vastly different, depending on where you go! Same with Vienna and its different districts. I think that's interesting. It definetly adds to the reputation of Paris as this monolith of the one grand city.

You can also go to La Defense to see some scycrapers. But I think the difference to other cities like cologne is also that Paris has been "static" in it's borders and quite tiny because you don't count everything around the core city as "Paris". Compared to Cologne where it's like "ah...yeah, that forest...that's also cologne...and that other town over there...yeah also part of cologne". (Cologne has 4 times the size of Paris).

@@rapsack7058 Paris has became a museum. I lived there in the early 2000's just before to move to Germany, and it is shortly after that period that Paris became a real Museum city, with the boring side of that name as well. Before it was a very active city, overnight as well, but now it is so expensive that "normal" people can't afford to live there anymore. Too many apartments are now Airbnb or equivalent. So you mostly have rich peoples, hotels, airbnb, and the rest are some well paid bobos/hipster who can still afford. I used to like this city in the 80's/90's, but not anymore. The actual mayor Anne Hidalgo is definitely not going to make it better. The only thing that still remains is the high amount of little criminality. You did a brilliant job and conquered the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe without modern technique, wearing a shirt and a vest! Next time you could try the view from the terrace of Sacré Coeur which is also very impressive. On my visits to Paris i found the Nike much more impressive than the Mona Lisa. Every time I come to the City of lights there is something else to discover and above all, enjoy the atmosphere of the city, just sitting in a café watching the people passing by. As you liked the pain au chocolat, you will also like the pain aux raisins with raisins instead of chocolat. The divine smell in the bakeries is free, like the air you breathe, all the rest is not, unfortunately. Enjoy this wonderful city and its marvels in lovely company, it is made for that!

Paris, no matter how much others might point out problems, it's still my favourite city that I visited, and I did 5 times, as a child with grandma, as a teen with parents, ater getting 18 with friends in various stages of my life, then after hittting 40 with my teenage daughter. And even though I have been there so often, I still missed so much. Like there are still so many places like museums, parks etc. I would want to go. Sadly I'm really ill cancer and now also handicaped with walking on top, need a rollator. But I need to go there with my 12 old son too, I promised him long ago before Covid. But I'm not sure how to handle that, the metro basically is a labyrinth of stairs :-(

If you really like museums, you should go check out the Deutsche Museum in Munich. This is awesome and one of the best museums in all of germany.

Fun fact for "Mr. I don't appreciate german drone laws": It is actually illegal to publish pictures / videos of the illuminated eiffel tower. I feel like a video titled "breaking a stupid law in 5 european countries within a week" is coming up sooner or later :-D Enjoy your stay. /smartass mode off

Seems like you had a good time overall. You seemed like you had a lot of joy eating the macarons. Years ago I went to a very high end mall in the suburbs of New York & they were selling macarons at a kiosk and you would not believe how much they cost for one. C’est incroyable!!!

Nick, be careful with images of the Eiffel Tower at night ;) kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2KZdHqBZrlsg68 However really nice video. I can remember a friend of mine had to puke because of the Arc de Triomphe. Well, not exactly, but when we were heading to the Atlantic in our twenties, we made a stop over at Paris. Our friend driving at the time was so fascinated with the crazy driving on the roundabout at the Arc, that he had to circle the Arc for about 100 times. The stomach of another friend of us did not really appreciate this.
