Are there really that many FOMO kits you want to have for your army? I feel like over the year it’s what 2-3 models like store anniversary, Warhammer day, and Christmas release? The rest of the fomo is just discounting or early access to models, and it’s across the factions. Do you really need every versus discount box, every army box starter, etc? I collect…. 2 armies. Neither has gotten anything new in 2022, so I’m either buying older skus that are always available. The Christmas boxes had options for them, but I didn’t pick them up because it wasn’t the right model combo to be worth it to me. So really the only applicable fomo models I can think of are WH Day’s Bayard’s revenge, and a store anniversary model. If you got new models this year, great. But I guarantee that means you didn’t get them last year or the year before. So, is it *really* a problem?
@brimstonearmory5504
@brimstonearmory5504 Жыл бұрын
@@timunderbakke8756 I mean... If you wanted some of the nice terrain that came with Warcry and had like two or three other stand alone boxes you'd be out of luck today. Same goes with any of the spells for Aos. There's a lot of stuff they randomly decide people won't have access to anymore. Not that any of these things are NEEDED, so I guess what you said can be said about anything. Just don't buy things and it's not an issue. But that's not really a solution to the real and manufactured issue that GW has designed.
@timunderbakke8756
@timunderbakke8756 Жыл бұрын
@@brimstonearmory5504 I was unaware of the AoS problems since it’s not a system I follow. My observation was more with 40k, where every single product outside of the explicitly marked exclusives like the Warhammer day model always end up available at some point. The Kill Team terrain comes out loose, the model kits do etc. I can see the frustration in truly limited time offers for things that aren’t the annual exclusive.

Yes, it depends on faction. Yes, if you are tyranids/harlequin player, so there you have about 2-3 boxes. But! About 50% of players are space marine collectors, even more are ‘imperium’ collectors. How many primaris leutenants exists? It is just one example. What about japanees ‘space marine heroes’?
@timunderbakke8756
@timunderbakke8756 Жыл бұрын
@@Haroith I have a space marine army as one of my two. To my knowledge, since 2020 (when I got in), the only exclusives have been the annual mini, which in that case was a chaplain in termie armor, a bladeguard Lt, and Bayard’s revenge. I’ll grant you, Imperium magazine has that one exclusive captain that’s annoying but most space marine kits are available on the shelf or will be at some point when restocked.

100% same for me. I buy the stuff I really like, and I'll get to it when I have time. It's awesome finishing up a kit then getting to look through your pile and deciding what you want to do next. No need to go to a store, wait for shipping, or find out the model was discontinued and now you can't get it. Obviously if you have like 200 boxes sitting around that you don't even have enough time left in your life to paint that's a problem. But when I see people with a "pile of shame" that is literally just 8 boxes of units they want to have in their army there shouldn't be any shame with that.

@Ducknuck84
@Ducknuck84 Жыл бұрын
some thoughts: Pile of shame: 1) periodically go through it and sell what you know you will never paint or doesn't inspire you anymore. 2) have bit boxes, for your extra parts. There is no reason to keep them on a sprue and in the original box plus when you want to kitbash everything is organized (i.e. sword arms in one bin, armored head in another) you would be surprised how much can be condensed. For limited runs its usually best to get it when its first up if you really want it or prepare to pay extra down the road but they should fall into the periodic trimming of the Pile Brushes: All true, only thing I would say is its ok to have more then a few brushes if it is the cheap ones, I buy my cheap workhorses in packs of 50 just so i don't have to go out and constantly replace them I get a new pack like once every year and a half. Tool: Yep review before you buy Wargaming: ya If you are LFG in the area and its hard to find games maybe don't start out by making a 4000 point army and start with one of the skirmish games like Killteam or Warcry. Also there are a lot of games now that do have solo rules so you can get a hang of the mechanics while you are LFG Comparing to others: only should be comparing your paining to your last paining. Keep one or two minis from when you started and then compare them to where you are now you will be surprised how much you have improved.

I love my pile of shame, I very easily get bored with painting certain colours so I love bouncing around things, or sometimes I have to wait for a delivery before I can finish a project so I have something else I can move onto. Its also easy to become disheartened with painting one thing and you need something else to get over the hump. Dont let it get too large, but having some hobby options is good, imo. But I am currently sitting on KT: ITD, half of the Votann army box, a couple of units of Ravenwing Bikes, Tau Combat Patrol and a lot of old stuff that has been stripped / needs stripping. So yes I don't practice what I preach. Also Jay: What are your thoughts on Stap speeder bikes for Star Wars Legion?

The issue with the "pile of shame" is seeing it as shameful. I mostly buy my minis off ebay due to not being rich so if I see a good price I take the opportunity. Even if I wasn't actively looking for such minis. Either they'll be great fun at another point of my painting career or they'll deliver bits. In the end I could still resell them, they usually don't lose worth - quite the opposite actually.

I wish I had something like that years ago when I still painted. I absolutely hated the shaking part. I was so OCD about it, and I would get tired of all the shaking. Especially because I used a lot of paints in a single sitting. I was kind of a machine for it, as I not only had my own but I also took commissions and sold them on ebay too. I had like an assembly line style painting method, where I would do something on one unit, move to the next while waiting for paint to dry, and so on. Honestly, it really ruined the fun and is part of why I don't do it anymore.

Core army units should be fine if you wait, but speciality units or kits are more on the fomo. So avoid diving into other armies if you still have kits to finish unless there’s kits like Battleforces that actually save money in the long run and you plan on playing them. Other thoughts?

The pile of shame is a double edged sword. However it is also a part of the hobby. Collecting. It's similar to stamp collecting, you don't have to use them, simply the fact that you have them can be satisfying. This isn't new, consider sealed box collecting. Consider mint condition comics collecting. Collecting items simply to store them, look at them, but not open them or use them, is not unique. It's your money and your collection. You do with it what you want! However, just make sure it doesn't become a "problem" in your life and keep it healthy. If you can do that, who is anyone to tell you to stop ?

Jay's Bulletpoint Timemarks - 0:36 Point 1 3:42 Point 2 6:38 Point 3 10:56 Point 4 14:46 Point 5 16:44 Point 6 Funnily Enough I was mid way making a E Payment for individual gear parts for Warhammer while listening to this list, then slowly took items off my cart as I was listening. I was also about to commit to a vortex mixer, and by the end of Eon's Video Im just staring at my shelf of shame going... Ohhh...

I'm gonna be honest with you - he's wrong about the mixer. Mostly anyways. Personally, I use a chinesium nail polish mixer combined with a bead for agitation. Works fine for dropper bottles. I wouldn't try a g-dubs pot in one though. The big bottles for primer and the like are too heavy to work well though. Here's the thing. A decent mixer of some sort both mixes the paint better *and* does if faster *while also* doing it's part to help prevent repetitive stress injuries. To be totally blunt, I have been painting for a lot of years now. When I got the idea to try out an actual mixer, plenty of years after I started, it was night and day. The comfort and speed is very nice. If I'm painting in acrylics tonight, I can just thoroughly mix several paints I'm gonna need for a painting session in the span just a couple of minutes and my hands don't hurt. If I need to mix something later, that's not a problem. I can have it completely mixed up in under a minute.

The best thing in the hobby is buying things , sneaking it in to the house, avoiding parents or the Mrs . Hidding it in your model stash and never taking them out of the hidding place unless the rest of the family is visiting the grand parents or is on vacations, then you maybe get to assemble a squad or a vehicle

i buy the 7$ pack of 8 brushes from hobby lobby and use those till they get too messed up to use and i use brush soap to extend the life. I recently bought the army painter master drybrush set since the artis opus ones are a bit cost prohibitive and theyre just about the only brushes i use any more. Also that comment about the hooking of brush bristles was funny cause i absolutely keep a few brushes that develop a hook to paint the inside edges/surfaces of hard to reach places and edge highlight using the curve for sharp highlights since im bad at doing the edge hilighting without dry brushes lol

The pile of shame... I was always "that guy" that had way too much, still do. I have so many things that never even left the box. I just got done going through some old "bits", and found that I probably have enough in there to start an entire space marine and eldar army. Like, entire units of just bits. I was so into kitbashing that I would buy an entire kit just for the pieces it came with so I could add them to other kits. I have 6 incomplete Viper Jetbikes because I would convert the turret into the pilot seat of the older pewter War Walker. I have a copy of Warhammer Fantasy (not sure what edition), completely unused, and was only opened just to check the contents. I bought Gorkamorka stuff because I was convinced I was going to start an orc army (what the hell was I thinking on that one, I couldn't even finish my Eldar or Space Wolf armies). I have several of the Inquisitor models, most still in the shrink wrap. Lately I have been looking through it all thinking I should start offloading it to people that might appreciate it. I just don't see myself returning to gaming; GW was my favorite system, and no one I know is willing to support them anymore.

As a new player, I bought the 2021 Space Marines Battleforce at a second hand place a couple of weeks before they announced the 2022 Battleforces... I didn't know they were an annual thing 🥲 and I bought the Start Collecting Imperial Guard box a month before the Cadia Stands box was announced... 🥲 my pile of shame is almost entirely due to bad timing, I swear 🥲 the thought of buying more models makes me feel physically sick now so that's good I guess...

When it comes to shaking paint , I use Vallejo, but if you have an electric screwdriver, put a piece of poster putty on the end , then a piece of cardboard, then put your paint pot on that with another piece of poster putty. Then spin it horizontal qnd vertical for about a minute. It's not high speed and you'll still have to shake some , and it'll fly off eventually, but spinning it a minute with the tool seems to help.

I’m kinda new to painting. Known about 40k for a while. But sadly I have built up my pile of shame as a beginner painter. Got the black Templars army box, the space marine side of the indomitus box, Grimaldus, agressors, Bladeguard veterans and the BT castellan and the death guard Christmas box. It’s a lot and will probably take me a year or so. But I’m a painter and not a player… yet. My goal is to paint them up before 10th edition and before the rumoured dark angels models come out as I definitely want to do a DA army

Wish I watched this video back in May. Basically did everything the was pointed out. Over bought on models, some that I don’t really want anymore (ie. assault intercessors) and bought way too many tools, paints, basing materials because I thought I need everything to start. Still enjoying the hobby, just wish I went about it differently.

I'm glad to hear #3 brushes get a shoutout. I keep hearing from people that for mini painting, a #2 is best. But I just love how #3s feel and that's my choice type of brush. Also, for the comparing oneself to others, joining groups online helps dull the feeling that everybody is a god tier painter. I'm in a couple of groups and it's nice to see other people who are on my level of miniature painting. Plus, they're also stoked to share their work!

I see both sides - I don’t want to get overwhelmed in a pile of undone stuff, but I like having a few choices for “what am I painting next?” Right now, I’ve got a unit of 10 OPR minis I could start, or I could do some one off “burrows & badgers” models for a game nobody really plays here but I just love the models and had a friend who played a while ago, or I could do a one off Templar Marshall.

Having a box of aos squigs or 40k gretchin is great for those times when you aren't happy with anything you paint. Quick, easy models to get a win under your belt with. Also, on the vortex mixer, just use artist paints. You've got to fix their consistency with medium but you save so much money. Seriously, the cost per volume of hobby paint is the same as windsor and newton pro-grade ultramarine, a paint made with a pigment that comes from a single mine in Afghanistan. It makes no sense

And regarding brushes, I do not agree to an extent. I've been painting for a little over a year at this point and recently switched from bulk-bought brushes from Amazon to sable hair brushes for about 8€ a pop and the difference is IMMENSE. It instantly improved my painting because turns out I wasn't lacking skill to paint the smallest details on a space marine eyeball, I was lacking a proper tool. I do agree however that you don't need one of those 100+€ sets with like 10 different sizes of expensive brush.

Jay, you have some good thoughts on gear - you don't need to spend hard-earned hobby dollars on "the next cool thing," but for me, gear is subjective, and some things ARE indispensable. 1 - Good light - I'm not a young hobbyist - I wear glasses and bad light does not help me see - I've invested in a good sale on a neatfi LED lamp - it puts out good daylight brightness with little shadow. It has made a huge difference in seeing clearly. 2 - good brushes - I agree that ya don't need to spend a fortune on brushes - Everyone yammers on about W&N Series 7s, but the price point? WHY? Are they taking care of those religiously? If not, why bother? However, I don't buy cheepies all the time either - actually, no, I do - Michael's Artists Loft Synthetics for Acrylics - $14 CAN for 5 brushes. I use these SPECIFICALLY for metallics and contrast paints - because they eat through Sable hair brushes, which I will not compromise on. Soon after getting back into painting minis after having very little luck with Army Painter brushes, I saw a review for the Game Envy Artist Arsenal. 5 sable brushes, $49 US. Ordered them, and tried them - more comfortable in my hand, lots of spring and held lots of paint. And they're NOT $10 to $20 per brush! And because I'm old school, I was raised that you treat your tools (whatever they may be) with respect. In this case is 3 - materials to clean and maintain your brushes. That is, The Masters Brush Soap, and Winsor & Newton brush restorer. Every major paint session, all my brushes, even the cheapies, get a bath, and every month, a dip into the restorer. Is it a time investment? Yes. For me, it's a worthwhile one. I see the payoff in the quality of my models. Having gear is not about spending money. It's about spending wisely - I have only bought one of those packs of Game Envy Brushes - and I've had them for over a year, and they're still amazing. Even with the cheepies, I have like 4 packs of them - but I'm only on the second set, and that's only because I really didn't take care of the first one. So I see what you're saying - gear is not the end all, be all, but crap tools WILL hold you back on getting the most from your hobby, as far as I am concerned, anyway...
