Problems to Look out for When Buying a Used Toyota Solara Convertible

The Toyota Solara is in a league of its own. There is no other used convertible that is reliable as the Solara. Dependable, safe, attractive and with the highest resale value makes the Toyota Solara the best used cabriolet that you can buy. There were two generations of the Solara. The first generation ran between 1998 and 2004 and the second generation between 2005-2008. The problems to look out for with the first generation were a cogged idle air control valve, otherwise known as the IAC, the O2 sensors, sludge problems and leaking valve cover gaskets. The 3.0 engine was a non-interference engine with a timing belt.. The second generation had the 3.3 engine which also had a timing belt but was an interference engine. Both engines were very reliable as long as you changed the oil regularly and on schedule.

@@eiyrie2990 Only if the top is down and you're driving fast (over 55 mph). I only drive with the top down in the city where the speed limit is usually 40mph or less, so it isn't a problem for my use case. The only major complaint is that visibility through the back window while the top is down is limited, so backing out of a busy parking lot may be a problem.

@@eiyrie2990 Hi, I have owned several convertibles and for me the road noise has never been an issue. The older covertibles ( I learned to drive on a 1967 Chevy Impalla convertible) may have been a bit noisier due to air moving over the vinyl tops and less interior insulation, but more modern convertibles drive and sound pretty much like a normal car. If you are thinking of getting a convertible don't let the noise argument dissway you from making the purchase. If it is a used convertible just make sure it has been well maintained as you would any other car. The car I own now, a 2007 Toyota Solara, looks exactly like the car in this video. We purchased it in 2011 with 25k miles and it now has 165k miles and we keep it well maintained and follow the manufactureres maintenance recommendations. My wife and I love it! Good luck!!

Hi Greg, I have a 2007 Toyota Solar (white w/tan top, tan leather interior) which I purchase in February 2011 with 25k miles and it still is performing excellent with a 165k miles on it. I have owned many cars in my life and several covertibles, but this is without a doubt my favorite car that I have ever owned. My wife and I both love driving this car and we do our very best to keep it well maintained and follow the manufacturers maintenance schedule. I replaced the top and the drain gutter myself a few years ago and overall the car still looks beautiful. The interior is starting to show its age from normal everyday use, but that is to be expected. My wife and I will periodically speak about getting a newer car ( before this car I would typically get a newer car every five years or so) but we both love driving this car so much it would break our hearts to get rid of it as it still looks and drives great. Unless Toyota starts making a convertable again we have no plans on trading it in anytime in the foreseeable future. Thanks for the video!

I’ve had a convertible since I was 16. I’m 67. I bought a 2007 3.3 SLE Solara for $7500 & 38K miles on it. It just passed 127K. Never had any problems except a dead starter at 85K. The top is always down, unless it’s raining or snowing. The road noise is NOT a problem. The low profile tires are very quiet. I haven’t had the problem with leaks in the top, Even with Northern Calif rainy season.

I recently bought a 2007 Solara. Here is additional 2 cents from me if u buy one of those. Check the water leaks from the gutter of the roof top. The gutter of the roof is hidden under the black metal cover at the top of the trunk, but you will see the gap. Close the roof and hose lots of water at the back of the roof. Water goes into that gap, then it will come out from the sides of the car. If there is a hole or tear with the gutter, you will see a lot of water inside the trunk. Mine was this case, and it was a huge pain for me to fix those huge holes. Holes are so common at the both side of the corner of the back.

We have had a 1999 Solara, and two 2007 Solara Convertibles. They are excellent cars and if Toyota was to produce a new line of these I would put in my order on one. We still own one and my wife does not want to part with it and go with a Highlander or something more Colorado friendly. So I put a new set of tires on it, change the oil and battery and we are good for a long time.

Info came in handy with the purchase of an 08 fully optioned SLE. One owner older couple, garaged and heavily serviced. For a 14 year old car it looks barely a couple years worn. Everything works no rust all the bits and they even kept the window sticker. Do wish it had a manual though I know the convertible didn’t offer it. Still so fun to drive and a suitable daily for all my stuff my truck doesn’t need to do. 125k miles and they had the timing belt done. Only thing I updated was the head unit and added a backup camera.

Ditto on the one I bought recently. I can't completely verify entire maintenance but clearly it was a well-maintained car that runs as smooth as can be. I also added an upgraded head unit and camera which is really the only thing these cars need to bring up to a more modern spec. Going into the purchase I planned on keeping the car for just a couple of years but a few months in I can see keeping the car until it dies lol. For the guy who posted the video, the mid-cycle refresh came in 2007 but otherwise I'd say everything about the video is spot on.

Thank you for your video. I bought a used 2006 Solara convertible in 2017 for $10k. It is light blue with a light tan top and an almost ivory leather interior. I am the third owner. I knew both previous owners and that it was well cared for. The car had 10k miles, I jumped at the chance to buy it. Now the car has 17.5k miles. I have other vehicles and I live in the frozen north, so it doesn't get much use other than on nice sunny days, but it sure is fun to drive when I do use it. I have loaned it out to friends from the warmer climes when they visit and they get a real kick out of driving a convertible where you wouldn't think that one would exist. We do get temperatures up in the high 70s and 80s during our short summers.

Great video. I love my Solara Coupe. I dont like the interior noise of the convertible nor the maintenance on the roof so I’m fine with my sunroof . I love this car and do think it will be very reliable but it’s lacking in comfort and has street / wind noise . Eventually I will switch to the 2002 - 2006 Lexus Es . Maybe it’s because I’m over 50 . I’m gonna try some aftermarket seat cushions first as I can always turn music up for the noise. One thing I will say is switching to ride flat tires added some noise. I’m more concerned with the seat comfort . I do like the ergonomics. I’ll probably regret selling ! Lol I’ll just continue to change oil every 3 k and hope it doesn’t start to burn oil as I have the 4 cylinder.

In my 2005, he internal rain guttering system was made of cloth and it degraded to the point that it would allow water to leak behind the back seat/floor and the trunk, filling up the spare tire well. Removing the rubber plugs under the back seats and in the bottom of the spare tire well helped the water drain, but the back seats still become somewhat soggy in heavy rain.

I've been researching Toyota Solaras and the convertibles are plentiful. It's the coupes that are few and far between. I know that Toyota built a few of the first geniration (1999-2003) Solaras with the 3.0 L v6 engines and 5 -speed manual transmissions. I would love to find one of those cars in an unmolested condition. But I'm most likely going to have to settle for one of the second geniration (2004-2008) cars with an automatic trans. Those with the SLE trim package are really nice! But they all have those "sun-moon roofs". I worked with a man who restored cars for about 3 years. We restored a lot of English roadsters "MGBs TR6s and the occasional Jaguar. We had some meny of our customers bring their cars in with slashed roofs, and upholstery.. We worked on cars with those sun-moon roofs and T-Tops too, and we had the hardest time keeping those things from leakng..

All the plastic outer trim pieces around the window and on the back of the convertible top are either cracking or peeling off and fading. All the rubber moldings around windows have gone to shit as well. Engine bolts are rusty that's no big deal. Some smaller rubber hoses became brittle. I am banging my head on trying to find what these parts are called so I can order replacements for them. Biggest issue is the convertible top which leaks now costs like 3 grand or something to fix. They made the engine so well that the body of the car will deteriorate before the engine ever does.

I've owned several Solaras....coupes and ragtops. Great cars. I thought the Gen 1 was beautiful. The 2nd gen is weird looking IMO, but is a better car from a technical point of view. Get the V6. Performs MUCH better and gets practically the same mileage. The 4 also has occasional issues, like oil consumption. On the 2nd Gen, some of the LCD dash gauges are almost impossible to see in daylight...an aggravation. I thought that the 2nd Gen 5 speed automatic was rather lazy in its shifting, albeit very reliable. My gen 1 ragtop roof leaked around the windows in the rain and was sloppy to latch closed. My Gen 2 ragtop was better in that regard. My gen 1 V6 did develop valve cover gasket leak at about 150k miles. Easily repaired. I'd buy another ragtop Gen 2...but I gotta say...the "blob" styling just never grew on me, I'll likely buy a Mustang GT instead next time.

And I would like to see a comparison between the Toyota Matrix and the Pontiac Vibe.

Here in Canada, the base Vibe started as a better equipped car. When combined with GM's financing and price flexibility, the Vibe became the better option. Now I just wonder what I did with the $2-4,000 I saved when I bought mine in 2005 🤔

Just want your input. My daughter bought a used 2002 solara convertible and after only a day all of a sudden the window just shattered, she said all she did was just opened the window and she was shocked it shattered into pieces. What could have happened? She said it was in fine shape when she got it otherwise she wouldn’t bought it. She’s shocked and disheartened, imagine after only having the car for one full day and there she is excited to drive it and all of a sudden that happened. My heart just breaks for her.

I tried. Just after the pandemic. I test drove 2. They were just too large. Too Bulky. Waaay too hard to see out the back. That was a deal breaker. Paid half, bought a 2000 Cabrio, that was much more what I wanted. Handles waaay better, easier to maneuver, I can see out the back and it’s actually more solid feeling. That second gen Solara had a lot of cowl shake, and it was much newer, less miles. I may have considered a Paseo Convertible, but how often are those available? Still prefer the VWs, honestly. I wish we had more small convertibles in the USA. I bought a 15 XB manual a few years ago, I ❤️ it.

The Solara is a different kind of car though. VWs tend to be a bit sportier than Toyotas. But the Solara does offer a decent amount of room in the back seats and is definitely a boulevard cruiser. If that's your thing it's tough to go wrong with a Solara if you can find one in good condition.

@@thedude957 agreed. I was just absolutely blown away by the poor rear vision. One I last drive was $5000, 2005, 110k miles. Not a bad deal. It was on lovely shape. Just too bulky and difficult to see out of.

I have a 1999 Solara SLE, 70k miles. I bought it with 67k 8 months ago for 2,500$. It's basically already paid for itself. I am having a noticeable shaking, mostly feel it between 30mph and 60ish. I have balanced and rotated wheels. No change. There doesn't seem to be a definite "cause" answered in any of the sites I've read. I travel for a living, so I don't drive it alot, but before I just throw money at parts? Any suggestions?

I have a 2007 Solara. My car would sometime start getting a small but noticible shimmy/shake to it at around 40 to 60 mph. I had the tires balanced and rotated but I continued to get the shimmy between 40 to 60 mph, particularly going downhill and braking. I ended up putting new tires on it (Michelin Defender2 215/55R17) and all shaking and shimmy went completly away. The tires previously were also Michelin Defenders and they had around 70k miles, which is a lot but they were rated for 80k miles. I think I possibly could have gotten another year out of them, but I am relieved and glad I purchased the new tires earlier than expected.

I can't believe people fall for the 10,000 mile oil change interval. That's just to make the EPA happy, not your car engine happy. 5,000 miles or less depending on driving conditions.

@@Leonardokite today’s oil has so many additives. Time means very little. Since I only Drive 3000 mikes a years, I change it about every 1.3 years, which is very soon. About 4k miles over a year. I am sure even every nearly 2 yrs I would be Okay.

I recently sold my '06 BMW 325Ci convertible, and purchased an '06 Solara convertible, based on TheFiftiesKid series of YT videos featuring all the stupid things that go wrong with the BMW. I expect the Toyota to not suffer the litany of failures that are associated with BMW ownership, but the downside is that the Solara lacks the crisp handling of the 325 and when it comes to braking, where the BMW felt like a carrier tail hook, with the Toyota braking is merely a suggestion. No comparison. Still, nice not to worry about instrument fault lights all the time.

The big problem with the Solara convertible is the propensity to leak. When I got my '06 it had aquariums in both the cavities under the rear seat and in the trunk. Toyota used a flexible material under the rear deck to channel the water to the drains located in the rear quarter panels. This "rain gutter" will split and develop leaks over the years, as will the window seal. Toyota doesn't make the gutter anymore, but there are aftermarket replacements. I found a convertible roof expert to do the repairs, and all is good now.
