NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother were killed on the eve of their sister’s wedding when they were hit by a suspected drunken driver while riding bicycles in their home state of New Jersey, police said Friday.
New Jersey State Police said the Gaudreau brothers were cycling on a road in Oldmans Township on Thursday night when a man driving an SUV in the same direction attempted to pass two other vehicles and struck them from behind about 8 p.m., less than a half-hour after sunset. They were pronounced dead at the scene some 35 miles south of Philadelphia.
Gaudreau, 31, and brother, Matt, 29, are Carneys Point, New Jersey, natives and were set to serve as groomsmen at their sister Katie’s wedding that was scheduled for Friday in Philadelphia.
Police said the driver, 43-year-old Sean M. Higgins, was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and charged with two counts of death by auto, along with reckless driving, possession of an open container and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Brodie, you made the right point when you said in effect it shouldn't take his celebrity status to make us care, and that another man died too, and we should mourn his loss too.

My heart goes out to all of the Gaudreau family, but especially their sister. Today was supposed to be the happiest day of her life, as she said “I Do” to the one she loved with her brothers standing by her side. And now… this. And it hits so close to home for me too. Not as a matter of relatability, but this happened just on the other side of the state where I live. A small state at that. My son played hockey in the same rink Johnny and Matthew played in just a few months ago. Thank you for being so dignified in your video. The authenticity shows through. And thanks for giving Matthew his due recognition. He is just as much a family member as Johnny was, and we shouldn’t regard his passing as less significant just because he didn’t have as much success in his pro hockey career.

Thanks Brody. He was thought of as a cool and down to earth fun young man. He was one of the smallest players in the league and famously used to use a 55 flex intermediate stick. Whether you were a fan for one week or years, you learned of this beloved Johnny hockey quickly. He was relevant, respected and a fan favorite.

Just watching him play you could feel how dedicated and passionate he was. He skated in a genuinely beautiful and awe inspiring manner, and once the puck was on his stick he had such a connection to it, it felt like it was impossible to get it away from him. In addition to that every story about him is focused on how he was absolutely brimming with kindness and compassion. I didn't know him, but as a hockey player and fan, he was one of us, he shared our love for this amazing game and we all mourn his passing. Rest in Peace Johnny Hockey!

Brodie, my deepest sympathy to the Gaudreau family. I too suffered a loss in 2007 when my 24 year old nephew was killed in a motorcycle accident. The tragic event was even more stark because my sister in law worked for the local police department that showed up at the scene. They had to break the news to her while she was at the office. My prayers to the Gaudreau family as they seek whatever solace they can find in the loss of Johnny and Matthew.🥺🙏🏻

South Jersey native here and this hit me hard. I goto the local rink that he played and basically grew up at and he was and is absolutely beloved. I never knew him personally but always felt if I played in the NHL I would want to play his style. I will truly miss his highlights and dreamed he play the with Flyers one day. My thoughts and prayers go out to their families. This act was completely senseless and most communities including mine offer free car rides for those that have drank too much and need a ride home. Well said, Brodie. It is a tragedy in itself for a family and to lose two men on the same day even worse, adding in the mix of it being on the night before their sister’s wedding makes this the worst nightmare. I know what the family is going through, 10 years ago my grandpa was walking in Phoenix in his residential neighborhood and was killed by two teens speeding 55mph in the street and hit my grandpa head on sending him airborne. He was perfectly healthy but they took him away from us. It never gets easy. I feel so bad for the family. I can imagine the sister is spiraling because they gathered there for her wedding and now there’s this cloud over her eventual wedding, I hope she is not thinking of it like that but the human mind can turn down wrong paths. I hope justice is served for the family but I know it doesn’t make it any easier. Justice wasn’t served for my grandpa. I woke up today, this was literally the first thing I saw and my stomach just plummeted. I wish this did not happen and doesn’t happen to others. If you recall the news Brodie, in South San Jose earlier this week a driver was speeding down highway 85 the WRONG way and hit a Tesla head on, killing a mom and son. People need to understand the responsibility of driving. We are moving a lethal weapon daily. Need to be aware and more careful everywhere we drive. RIP to the Gaudreau brothers. Im sorry this happened. It shouldn’t have happened. A mistake that could have been avoided. Also, don’t ride bikes are narrow streets, especially one lane roads. Don’t ride bikes on streets all together. Some drivers get nervous and that cause an accident. Better to ride bikes on trails with no cars around for everyone’s safety. The police report said the car in front of the one that hit the guys had to move into the middle of the road to avoid them so that tells me the boys were taking up a good amount of space on the single lane road. I looked at the road on Google maps, not much space there. Not a good decision to go riding on that road and from the news report it looked like it was raining last night as well. Not blaming them but a better choice could have been made to prevent the possibility of an accident.

I was at the American Soldier Cemetery in Normandy when I received the news. The setting was appropriate considering the tragic shocking news. I lost my best friend of 30yrs last Christmas Eve to a drunk driver…..herself. She had a blood alcohol of .326, over 4 times the legal limit. She was a liver transplant recipient & should have never even been drinking. I’m still so incredibly pissed at her, but I still miss my best friend. My heart breaks for the Gaudreau family. Those poor babies that will grow up without their fathers just guts me.

To try to honor the Gaudreaus, ALL sports should stop selling alcohol at ALL events for at least one night, if not permanently. As someone who grew up with an alcoholic father (alcohol is one of the triggers for PTSD in my life, a scar that will NEVER go away), I am disgusted when anyone's life is cut short by anyone who gets behind the wheel after "five or six beers" and who was drinking WHILE driving. And while the industry has as a tag line on their beer ads to "Plese Drink Responsively", the one sentence you never hear at a bar is, "Sir, you've had enough."😡

Not every player in the NHL gets to be known (let alone liked) league wide. Johnny “Hockey” Gaudreau was one of the rare cases of both - a league-wide recognized player, and a beloved one. The NHL never really got to know his brother Matthew, but that doesn’t make it hit any less hard that both are gone. Rest in peace, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. From a personal standpoint, Gaudreau reminded us a lot of a classmate and friend my brother and I went to school with for 7 years, and so we jokingly would endearingly call him by that classmate’s name whenever the Sharks played the Flames. I also watched a lot of the “Weird NHL” videos over the years, and one of the few moments that stuck out to me was how as a Calgary Flame, during visits to Nationwide Arena, he’d jump as the cannon was fired from the stands. I found it ironic when he ended up playing for the Blue Jackets, that when he became known for being jumpscared by the cannon, that he would end up having to face it every home game. Guess he had to get used to it. Maybe the first game this next season, we’ll get a 21-shot salute from the cannon in Columbus in honor of #13.

Completely gut wrenching. There are no "Columbus" or "Detroit" or "New York" fans today. Hockey is a sport made up of human beings with great skill. They also happen to be some of the most down to earth athletes you will ever meet. Seeing how he carried himself, how close his family is just makes this even more tragic. His family is one of great faith in God, and they will need every last bit of that faith to get through this. Because as you said, it is about "getting through it"- it will never leave them as long as the walk this earth. So many prayers for that family right now.

My Aunt told me today that a 7 year old and her grandmother were killed by a drunk driver out in Ohio recently. Its selfish and its a conscious decision to drink and drive. Make the decision before you go out not to drive. It breaks my heart what that family is going through and it was preventable. The guy probably took 1000’s of flights and driven 1000’s of miles but ends up getting killed on a pedal bike in his hometown over someone’s poor decision making skills. Im so sick of it. They need to make it automatic life sentence if you kill someone getting behind the wheel drunk. RIP and God give that family strength because i know they are broken beyond belief.

My family has some Boston college ties. My nephew / godson grew up loving Boston college hockey and especially Johnny gaudreau. My uncle at the time worked at Boston college and got the entire hockey team to sign a bc jersey for him. My nephew now goes to the University of Tennessee, but at home he still has that shirt framed and on his wall. During that time when he got the shirt, I had also gotten him a framed autographed picture of Johnny gaudreau. That picture is on the wall to this day still. I couldn't imagine growing up and losing my idol. RIP

I work nights, I was following the rumors and story last night at work. So many emotions and anxiety hoping it was fake. The story came out around 5am and it all started around midnight. So 5 hours we were all in the dark.

I’m very disappointed in how much of the radio commentators here in Canada have treated this. There’s still turning it into how good a hockey player he is not about how crushing this is to the family.

This is brutal. Yes, as a hockey community, we mourn. But on a human level: Gaudreau seemed like a good family dude. That's what hurts most.

As equally tragic and devastating as the incidents that involved the deaths of Jay Briscoe and Kobe Bryant.

My condolences go out to the Gaudreau family. Johnny was more than a hockey player, he was an ambassador for the game. Everyday, people lose their life because of drunk driving and it always takes a major tragedy to change laws and stuff. I hope this gets national attention that leads to real change so we don't see another Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau tragedy ever again.

A devastating loss for the Gaudreau family, friends and the hockey community. Perhaps telling WHY it happened & educating is the best way to honour the legacy of the brothers. This was NOT an accident as the driver who killed Johnny and his brother has been charged with vehicular homicide after he admitted to drinking before driving. Such a sad and likely preventable loss on so many levels for so many.
