A good place for you to start would be the Musical Theme from the Movie "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly". part of their Clint Eastwood, Spaghetti Western Theme Music Symphony's.

I heard that the lyricist wanted to create a musical form of modern art. Many have tried to determine what the lyrics mean. All have failed, but the song is beautiful and as it was allegedly based on J.s. Bach's 'Air on a G-string', it is definitely worth listening to. The lyrics have taken parts of Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' a traditional racy book which dates to 1386, it is still in print, and other places too. So we have this which was first performed in 1968. Many of the more senior generation will remember this from their younger days. Just like me, and still love it, just like me. Excellent reaction.

I have now listened to this version over 200 times since discovering it earlier this year. My brother and I discovered the original in 1978 and while it has remained a Top 10 song of mine over the next 43 years it became my brothers favorite. My brother accidentally overdosed on pain meds because he was scared of ending up back in the hospital for months on end again and thought the adverse effects would go away. He was dead by the next morning. This was just over 6 years ago and God do I wish I had known of this version to play at his wake. Sometimes I flat out cry and others I contain it to a single tear, but this version makes me cry every time I hear it. The angst in Gary's voice of 35 years of "life" blasts through those beautiful lyrics and blends into a perfect balance that I now realize that life is, no matter where you live, what you believe... Just THANK YOU to everyone involved in this production, it has literally made my life bearable again. A very long story that I will not bore you with...

We skipped the light fandango Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick But the crowd called out for more The room was humming harder As the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink The waiter brought a tray And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale She said, 'There is no reason' And the truth is plain to see But I wandered through my playing cards And would not let her be One of sixteen vestal virgins Who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open They might have just as well've been closed And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale And so it was that later

As if the meaning of this song isn’t cryptic enough, there were two more verses that never made the cut. Lyricist Keith Reid’s words are still a mystery to all 54 years later. There is a nautical theme involving a mermaid running through it, I think. “If you want to have a hit, you gotta make it fit. So, they cut it down to 3:05.”

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" has sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies which is a remarkable feat, especially for a song released as a single. Only about 40 songs in history have ever achieved this great feat. In 2004 the song also made it onto the top 60 of Rolling Stone’s notable ranking of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1998, it was inducted into the highly-distinguished Grammy Hall of Fame. And in 1977 the Brit Awards gave it the distinction of being The Best British Pop Single 1952-1977, an accolade it shared with “Bohemian Rhapsody” (1975) by Queen. Also in 2018 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame changed its criteria, allowing singles to be inducted into the institution as opposed to only musicians themselves. And “A Whiter Shade of Pale” was amongst the first songs to be enshrined therein. The success of this song has led to “a whiter shade of pale” being adopted as a common phrase in the English lexicon.

Dude, my aunt was married to their manager. Family story goes that The Man poked his head round Diane's door when she had flu, and said 'Fuckin' 'ell, Di, you look like a whiter shade of pale'. Diane always swore it was true, and that they got the theme from Bach because it was always playing in her flat. That's the story anyway, and I'm sticking with it.

Love this song. I've played it at so many weddings & funerals both. It means a lot to a lot of people I think. The lyrics are criptic & nobody really knows exactly what they mean. Prog Rock really pushed the boundaries of music at the time & there was so much cool experimentation. The melody is strongly influenced by JS Bach & some of the lyrics were inspired by Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, but more than that's really just speculation as far as I know. There's something wonderful about the Hammond Sound tho & this versions use of the orchestra takes it to another level. It's fab to listen to Procol Harem & a song from 68 still being enjoyed for the great composition it is today. Great reaction as always. Peace, love & happiness to all. xx

Gary Brooker of the band Procol Harum wrote and first performed this song in 1967 with his six piece band. You can find this version on youtube. His voice is so much better now than it was back then. I had been reading online that the meaning of this song had to do with a sexdual encounter gone awry but I disagree totally. Although some of the lines don't make since to me, it is obvious that the guy is performing before an audience and he's higher than a kite. He's feeling sick and wants to quit but the crowd called out for more. "The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away" is the effects of whatever drug he has taken. "When we called out for another drink, the waiter brought a tray." He's performing in a nightclub and drinks are served on a tray. I agree a lot of the song is mish-mash but Gary explained that. He said that he was high when he was writing it and some of the lines just fit the space he was trying to fill so he put it in. He's still a genius in my book. The music omg!!!

👍 I enjoyed your comments throughout this live performance….don’t listen to the haters. Great reaction video! First time viewer here (🤔 just might have to subscribe if you do more of this quality) 👍 I have some comments, interpreting the lyrics of this song which gives it even a deeper dimension - I will share that at the end of this - (and sorry for this detailed commentary, but I think you will find it helpful if you listen to the song again and/or share it with others). Gary Brooker’s incredible singing in this live performance matched - or perhaps even exceeded - the quality of the original 1967 recording that took place 40 years earlier. The band’s name comes from a couple of possible sources. One of the band members in ‘67 had a cat named Procol Harum. This is Latin for “Far beyond these things”…. Personally, I think they named the band after the cat. 😁 This song and about 3 or 4 others defined the sound and the scene that was the “Summer of Love”. Unfortunately, that beautiful era only lasted about three years…. Innocence lost - marked by another outdoor concert in December ‘69 at Altamont - The Rolling Stones - they hired the Hells Angels motorcycle gang to be their “security” force - 4 people died that night. However, great music continued to come out from the late 60s all through to the mid 90s. But 1967 through Woodstock 1969 was magic. There has been much debate/misunderstanding regarding the lyrics. I believe I can unlock the mystery for you. The lyrics are mostly metaphorical. The song is about a young couple who are attending a party perhaps at a ballroom - maybe even on a ship. They were either entertainers for the crowd, or they were just part of the crowd dancing….”We skipped the Light Fandango” but instead did cartwheels across the floor, implying that they were having a great time, perhaps even on their way to getting drunk. The room seem to be shaking apart as they “ordered another drink”, but the waiter brought a tray of many drinks. As the night wore on, the young man was fast becoming interested in having a more private intimate time with this young girl…. But yet even through her near drunkenness, she sensed it, and became frightened. As the young man shuffled through his “playing cards” - a metaphor for looking for that winning hand to convince her to go with him - she again was unable or unwilling to give into him. Even as he told her stories, and lies about himself to impress and take advantage of her she knew she was potentially headed for trouble as “The truth was plain to see”. The vestal virgin metaphor clearly implied that she was young, inexperienced, and not ready for what she feared was his ultimate intent. But he kept on with his tales and lies, and he “would not let her be”…..ramping up the pressure on her to give in. This frightened her tremendously. I have heard, but I cannot confirm, that Gary Brooker and his cowriter actually wrote two more verses, that were never recorded. We will probably never hear the end of that story. Again, I want to say your reaction video was wonderful and genuine. Well done

You really should go back & give a listen to the original "Whiter Shade Of Pale", released in 1967 when the man you saw singing was himself only 22 years old. In this 2006 performance he was 61 years old, and his voice is remarkably the same. Today, he is 76 years old, still writing music, recording, and TOURING. But really, go listen to the original. It's iconic and worth the listen.

There is temptation to interpret the lyrics; my advice is Don't. Or at least don't think it can be nailed down; be satisfied with just having an opinion. Interpretation of art is personal, and the lyricist approaches lyric writing as 'art'. In an interview, lyricist Keith Reid said he approaches lyric writing like Salvador Dali approaches painting, in surrealist terms. They aren't meant to be definable. They're meant to be the capture of a mood. All his lyrics have that same Daliesque quality, of being at first glance very realistic, very present-world, but on further scrutiny it's an insubstantial dreamscape, refusing to be literal. It's a Mood.

The lyrics to this are cryptic indeed - I think they are meant to be kind of like a Dali painting, surreal with familiar elements. There are some references that you can catch if you are knowledgeable on history and old classic literature - "as the miller told his tale", probably refers to "miller's tale" in the Canterbury Tales. It was a tale in which the Miller (quite drunk) regaled the audience with a tale of a carpenter's wife who cheated with a clark. "One of 16 vestal virgins" - vestal virgins were priestesses of the Roman goddess of the hearth, Vesta.

Wonderful song about sexual seduction, but always tinged with the sadness that two guys took the writing credits (and the millions in income,) while the guy who created that incredible Hammond organ part that the whole song revolves around was denied his rightful co-writing credit. Took him decades before he won in the courts and given his due, and while he can't get past royalties, he gets his one third share from then on, which is still a lot considering how many times the song gets covered. Greed makes some people treat others very poorly.

I don't know what it's about, but it makes me think of a story where he's out partying with his lover, and they drive home and she gets killed in a car accident. one of 16 vestal virgins, who were leaving for the coast And although his eyes were open, they might just as well been closed. She said there was no reason, and the truth was plain to see. He wandered through all his playing cards, he would not let her be. And so it was that later, as the miller told their tale that her face at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale.

If you've never heard of Procol Harum or the song A Whiter Shade Of Pale, you're probably too young 😉. I used to listen to this song so many times, actually from the beginning when it came out. At that time, I didn't know what it meant, I was young, it's a song of mixed sentences, put together very well. The general consensus is that “A Whiter Shade Of Pale” is a snapshot of a drunken sexual escapade gone wrong.

You need all four verses to start to grasp the depth potential to the lyrics. Four verses could consume a season of translations.

This song was released in the 1960's by Procol Harum of which Gary Brooker was the singer. This is him years later and his voice is just as good as on the original version. The original was released in my youth but I think I prefer this version with the orchestra and his voice which has aged like a good wine.
