Music for the soul. Gary Brooker passed away in Feb. 2022. His voice just seemed to get stronger and better over the years. What a fantastic setting for this concert. Love this song, it belongs up there with the greats. Enjoyed hearing this again Chad thanks.

Every year we have top 4000 in The Netherlands on the radio before Christmas and every year Procal Harum is in it.last year they where on nummer 55. The number is from 1967 and there was lots of beautiful music at the time.I was 14 years old and a hugh Bee Gees fan.i remember the Hollies,the Kings the Eagles,the Doors and manny more bands. A great time to grow up.

Chad, I have to laugh here because I watched an interview a while back where one of the members of Procol Harum said when they were on tour with Bee Gees (1968 I think) he was fascinated with how they used the orchestra and that is what inspired this song. I kid you not. I always loved this song.

That's right. They toured with the Bee Gees in 1968. This song was released the year before, and was very popular. They later added more orchestral sounds to their music. This performance is much later and different than the studio version, which is great. The organ drives that instrumentation.

Such a treat to see this. Classic oldie song. They usually played this at the prom. My boyfriend and I slow danced to this at prom. I adore Bee Gees but thank you for mixing things up like this. So many fabulous songs from 70’s and 80’s!

Just getting here. This is a great song choice Chad. I remember it well from 1967 when I was in elementary school. This live performance came much much later, but Gary Brooker's (RIP dear man) voice was still great. Can it be even better? Now here is the really wonderful part. Procul Harum started out as a psychedelic band, as was normal in the mid 60's. BUT, They toured with (guess who?) OUR BEE GEES in 1968. Gary said he would watch from the wings and be mesmerized by what the brothers did with Bill Shepherd and the orchestra. Gary wanted to incorporate orchestral sounds into his music. He went on to do just that, moving forward to be really more of a progressive rock band. Love this!

The cat’s name was actually Procul Harun, but the cat’s name was misspelled.

Procol Harem was a 'progressive rock' group due to the inclusion of orchestra and due to lyrics that are expressive, emotive, yet somewhat vague and open to interpretation. The original 1967 recording of "A Whiter Shade of Pale" did not have an orchestral backing (it was their first recording, so they didn't have the money for such extravagance), but later albums did add orchestra, to great effect. Highly-recommended listening: the title track on "A Salty Dog". When listening to Procol Harem, be advised that the lyrics aren't precisely-descriptive; they are written to be a Mood. You can't take the words literally. The lyricist was a fan of avant-garde and surrealistic art, where things are open-endedly suggested rather than clearly defined; his lyrics suggest but do not specify. Applying this to "A Whiter Shade of Pale", debates have gone on since the song's 1967 release about what it means; there is no definitive answer. The lyricist has always answered questions with stating that they mean what they personally mean to YOU. You can give your opinion, but no one really knows, possibly even the lyricist himself. It's a mood, not a photograph. It's poetry. I want to interject the fact that over the decades since Gary Brooker first recorded and released this song, his voice has barely changed. If you go back to hear the original 1967 version (and they did put out a video back then to promote it), you will be amazed how much the 22yr-old Brooker sounds like the old man in the 2006 outdoor festival version. The defining constants of this song has always been Gary Brooker (who also wrote the music based on misremembered Bach), the organ solos, the measured pace, and the tune. A flair of genius in its time and any time of history. RIP Mr Brooker, lost last year.

Loved your reaction to this classic 1967 rock anthem. I was in the military when this memorable song was receiving wide airplay. All these years later, this piece is still a classic! By comparison, today’s music is … pale.

WOW, wouldn't we all enjoy sitting in an idyllic glade on a summer eve listening to such a feast for the ears! Gary sure could belt it out! Procol really incorporated classical motifs beautifully into pop music. Far superior to the tripe out there now! No semi naked dancing girls or grabbing of body parts either, just pure talent. The lyrics certainly are cryptic. There are even references to "The Canterbury Tales"...the miller, the vestal virgins. Some say "The ceiling flew away", "playing cards" (taking chances), "Her face at first just ghostly turned a whiter shade of pale", "Although my eyes were open they might just as well been closed", refers to death, perhaps by drugs. Who knows? I suppose everyone has their interpretation but, regardless, the music is amazing. Thanks for playing my request. 😊😊

This was a great pick! When I was a kid there were so many Vietnam protest songs, and I associated the sound of the Hammond organ with them. It was prevalent and I was 10-11 years old. I heard the words ghostly and whiter shade of pale and immediately went to soldiers killed. Somehow the "ceiling flew away" was a helicopter to me. I think it was just the times. Now, I have read that wasn't what they were going for at all. It was about relationships and endings. I guess it's still subject to interpretation all these years later.

It may just be my own opinion but I think youth in Europe are more exposed to classical influences in music than the west, stuff like "Night at the Proms". Used to love that show.

GARY BROOKER on piano & vocals with the organ, bass, guitar & drums was the core group as in the original 1967 recording, with Gary being the original last member. Everyone else was with the orchestra as well as the choir. The organ part was written on progressions based on a Bach composition. Therefore it was a perfectly natural song to be blended with an orchestra. Their other hit song Conquistador, was recorded originally with a full orchestra.

Do you know the song "Conquistador?" It's another great one from Procol Harum. It was on their 1967 album, but they reworked it a bit and released it as a single in 1972, using a symphony orchestra. I loved progressive rock and symphonic rock like the Moodies. Playing in orchestra all those years, it is very relatable.

What does We skipped the light fandango mean in English? "We skipped the light" means they didn't bother turning off the light. "fandango turned cartwheels on the floor" is surely some physical activity - dancing or sex on the floor.

Wauwwwww, ik kan m'n enthousiastme niet in het Engels uitdrukken, dus m'n Nederlandse versie. Wat een fantastische uitvoering van dit geweldige nummer. Inderdaad het orkest, de zangeressen, de klarinet , het orgel en natuurlijk de zanger van Procol Harum. Ik vind deze uitvoering, door de live instrumenten en de wat ouder wordende stem vande zanger GEWELDIG. Ik ga ook helemaal terug naar mijn jeugd, op deze plaat voor het eerst geslowdanced met een vriendje, ik was pas 12 jaar wow. En 2 jaar terug, ik weet niet of het in Amerika doorgekomen is, maar toen is Peter R de Vries doodgeschoten en dit fantastische nummer werd op zijn afscheid gedraaid. Zoals je nu misschien ook merkt, ik ben er erg door geraakt.
