wait, just to be clear, the OLDER ipad pro, 4th generation 11", ALSO has the hover feature? Im so confused on this one... does anyone know for sure? I am looking to get a 2nd hand ipad and don't know which to get. any help will be appreciated🙏

Only the M2 chip iPads have the hover feature, not the M1 or A12 Bionic chip ones, so you have to check the tech specs of the one you are purchasing but in general it's only the most recent model (and even then some don't have the M2, like the new iPad itself doesn't).

Love procreate...but the hover feature for apple pen gen 2 doesn't work. I'm using ipad pro 12.9 M1 updated to version 17.3 - The hover function WAS working in procreate, but suddenly stopped. Hover still works in other apps, so I know it's an issue with Procreate. If anyone else is having this problem, please advise!

A Huge Downside of the quick brush changing Update: It's really hard to use with the one-touch QuickMenu gesture and zooming the cavas in & out. Since that new updated function is basically enabling you to change the brush size and opacity with one/two hand gestures while you're hovering the Ipad, it conflicts with the QuickMenu gesture and zooming the canvas when you're hovering. So it's like, you have to stop hovering the pencil if you want to use those functions. It doesn't work super decently. Kinda sad..

Thank you Lisa, your videos are always so informative and I love your energy! My husband got me a new M2 iPad Pro when he saw how excited I was about it - and the first thing I tried after it finished moving over my files was Procreate - and much to my disappointment the hover features didn't work. I was heartbroken and started looking online to see if other folks had the problem - turned out that a setting that had ported over when I did the transfer of data from my old iPad was disabling the hover - at the same time I noticed an update available from apple so I downloaded it and it fixed the problem - I've been really enjoying the new functionality. Another item of note is that my case that I used on my 'old' iPad doesn't let the apple pencil charge - so I had to order a new case too... just letting folks know in case they also upgrade because of the new features!

If you screen record ProCreate, for example, the pencil hover is also captured on screen? Like, if I need to show an equation, but with no contact of the pencil on screen, is it possible?

Yes, screen record does capture hover effects, but you can turn off Hover in the iOS settings, so that should work for you.

The hover thing is nice, but proper non gesture based shape tools would also be nice. making a perfect resizable circle or square should already be a thing in this app, and a polygon tool. but I guess hover is fine. :/

TBH, I’m brand new to Procreate but I literally just saw someone do this in a beginner video yesterday. She just pressed and held her finger down on the canvas while she was drawing a circle and it snapped into perfect shape. Works for triangles and squares too.

yyeah... they are pretty obviously doing this on purpose. barring upgrades from models only 1 year old, and keeping this "price ladder" that makes you always feel like its only worth buying the most premium one available. personally, it only makes me NOT buy their products, rather than buy yearly... I've been wanting to buy an ipad for about a year now, simply because of procreate, but something always holds me back. you know in less than a year there's going to be an "even better" ipad that ACTUALLY takes full advantage of procreate and apple technology. so why buy one now? and in a year you'll say the same thing again... its so stupid

Hover is an Apple Hardware update that is only for the new M2 iPad, its not Procreate who did it. They are just developing tools for what Apple is making. That being said Color Drop and the updated Brush Cursor work for your iPad! Also there are a bunch of great performance increases you may notice too in the 5.3 update for your iPad!

At least in the iPad launch video it looked much better, so really, it's not such a loss.

I honestly also expected a lot more to come with the 5.3 but sadly it was just this. Do you know how often are Procreate updates usually released? Is it once a year? Procreate is only 10$ and you only pay it when you download it, not monthly. Most people with ipads buy that app anyway, so for what Procreate offers, it's very cheap. Not for everyone, but it's worth saving up for and purchasing.

And I find hovering a bit unsettling. and one more thing, there was a reel in your Instagram that you extract or pull out some elements from reference pictures into procreate screen...could you pls explain or show it here on KZbin. I think Amazon pencil alternatives can work with Procreate because they use the sane technology as apple pencil.

Sadly the hover function doesn't work despite having the 4th generation ipad Pro 11inch and Apple pencil 2. I got all the right settings. It just doesn't want to work. Disappointing.

It's pretty strange because the iPad Pro already had this feature, at least on the M1 version. Apps such as Nomad Sculpt had it already. Which leads me to believe that it is solely up to the developers make it possibeon their apps, as opposed to making use the simplified way that Apple provides as default from the M2 upwards.

hover is all well and good, but hasn't anyone noticed that ver. 5.3 has removed the "disable finger touch" option in the gesture controls / general tab.. why? my hand keeps moving the canvas when i draw.. i don't want my hand incidentally moving the canvas as i draw.. so where is this option now in the new 5.3 version?

I just figured it out! It was off by default on my iPad. In Procreate I went to Actions > Gesture controls > Apple Pencil Hover icon > then turned on Touch

This makes me so sad. I worked my butt off to get a iPad with my own money my parents agreed to pay for half if I paid half myself. I did dog walking in the summer art commissions on my old Samsung tablet then screen was showing signs of going out. When it started showing signs of going out I felt like there wasn’t going to be way for me to upgrade I just barely managed to make enough money for my half that I had to pay. I got my iPad it was a iPad air fourth generation. At the time it was only a couple months old but then apple released a 5 generation iPad air. I was so sad that my iPad didn’t have a M1 chip. Then Apple stopped offering the product only selling the 5th generation. Now to hear that they will no longer support the old Apple Pencil breaks my heart how many people out there have similar stories to me but have the older iPad with the old pencil? How many people were there with the old technology because that’s all they had and can’t afford to upgrade.? It’s harder to believe that art making is supposed to be for everyone when procreate just chooses to cut old the old technology

Can I ask how can you undo your metered layers a day or two after combining them. I want to remove an overlapped element leaf which is sitting on top of and covering my roses. So, hover does not work on an Ipad pro 11? My Procreate updated to 5.3 and I was able to open files created in older versions. That makes sense because who would want to trash their old work? I can see where this would save your Pencil tips, as well, and the surface of your Ipad.

No it won’t. It’s only the new iPad’s with the M2 chip that received the updated technology from Apple that allowed Procreate to utilize it in their program

Hi Lisa, I recently took up Procreate after seeing your earlier videos and also worked on creating the "Mushroom House" from your channel. I have a question please. When I am working on drawing something and though I am on the correct layer and using the correct brush trying to draw shapes, no strokes appear on the 'canvas' and a message comes up in the top bar saying "No Quick Shape Action available" (this flashes quickly where you see see messages like "undo layer or delete layer" when you hit the back button). This suddenly happens in the middle of drawing motifs on a new layer. Trust I explained my problem well. Did I mess up any setting whilst drawing or am I drawing on the wrong layer. I tried drawing on different layers at this point but I continue to see this message - No Quick Shape Action available" How can I rectify to be able to continue. By the way I do have the Hover feature on my IPad. Many thanks.

I have a the ipad pro 12.9 2017 and this is why I prefer surface pro, Galaxy tablets And any other tablet that exists having that feature already implemented, This feature was always there .lmao apple knew what they were doing, They could have added that feature when they first released Apple pencil even Releasing Apple pencil 2 again to force people to upgrade to A new ipad! and this ia why i hate apple, Always doing sneaky craps and try to force people to upgrade They know good and damn well the hover feature has been around lol

Only the iPad Pro with the M2 chip (released in 2022) have all the features (including the new hoover functions). Older iPads can still benefit from Procreate 5.3 with the new color drop, the new project compression and some bugs fixed. The only thing is they won't have access to the hoover functionalities.
