It was definitely over-hyped and delivered under cooked. I played with it for a few days and when I realized there was no way to move layers or lasso selections I went back to playing with ToonSquid. Their UI decisions make no sense, and it's only major strength right now is the performance feature. That said, I think they'll work it out and deliver what they promised, it's just a pain that we'll be sitting here waiting for who knows how long. I most likely won't be using it until lasso selection and the ability to rearrange layers in drawing mode is added because like you I don't enjoy the process of flipping back and forth between Procreate and Dreams.

100% the flip book almost feels sticky or something. Like it’s hard to gauge the movement of the animation because the movement of the flip book is so sluggish.

Procreate dreams has quite the learning curve, but once i got passed some of the learning hurdles it really became something fun to create with. There still are a few bugs to contend with, but for the most part they only provide minimal hindrance. Personally, the main things I would like to see in future updates is the shape tool, selection tool in the drawing mode, and a replace clip option.

I am liking it and I only see a few barriers to me loving Procreate Dreams. My go-to app for quick animation is Moho Pro and there are a few features I'd love to see here. I would like to see: - vector tools with the ability to control line width after the fact (Moho Pro) - A bone style rigging system with IK/FK and some level of dynamics (Moho Pro) - layer menus like procreate - alpha, clipping, reference, etc - the same drawing tools for making clean shapes from procreate( ellipse, curve, straight lines, etc) - Selection and manipulation tools from Procreate (select, inverse, flip, fill, etc) Been animating in Moho Pro for years, have used Harmony, Blender, C4D, ToonSquid, Calipeg, TVPaint, Flash, Adobe Animate, and more - but I still like this app a lot! Been working on simple bumpers for a documentary series as of late and looking forward to further improvement!

While I agree there’s a lot of room for growth for Dreams, I don’t think it was overhyped, I think expectations were probably just a little unreasonable on our part. I was an early adopter of Procreate back in the day and it was a far cry from where that app is now. Give them time and I fully believe it will be everything people were hoping for, much like Procreate is now. I am just waiting for some of the features in Dreams to carry back over to Procreate “infinite layers”! Great video.

Agree that what features there are tend to be hidden and a lot of what I consider to be critical drawing features (select, customizing individual brushes, moving layers to name a few) features, that they could have ported from Procreate, are missing. The ‘drag to expand’ frames is clunky. I also agree that feature are hidden behind strange places, e.g. clicking on the time code to activate onion skins. Good honest review here. Thanks.

It takes time to remove those unwanted track. Also, I prefer the undo and redo button to be like the one in Procreate. Your frustrations are echoed by the mass. This being said, I can’t complain too much. It’s a great program and Procreate made it affordable for everyone. I totally agree that they took the minimalism too far and ended up making the app not very intutive. In my opinion Procreate did a great job of finding a balance between minimalism and user experience. And Procreate has been my favorite drawing app and I have enjoyed making frame by frame animations in it. So I definitely went into Dreams expecting it to be easy to jump into and was really suprised by how similar elements in Dreams were extremely paired down. Definitely agree about the undo/redo and hiding the Settings and onion skins in unintuitive places. I think I was most disappointed by the drawing/flipbook mode. I was suprised that they didn't leverage a lot of elements from the original app's animation mode. And because of that I was originally using Procreate to make frame animation and then importing the project into Dreams to use the Keyframes and Performing. Now with the updates I have found myself doing a lot more of my animation and drawing in Dreams. I definitely believe that in time Dreams will be an awesome app to use. So i'm excited for the future.

I couldn't agree more to your verdict and opinions about Prodreams…..i just feel that we are a bit too high on our expectations and desire to have a fully fleshed out animation tool that's comparable to the big names in the industry on an ipad, .…apps like toonbom, moho, animate cc, spine 2d, after effect, and others. My thoughts initially was that prodreams was short of its delivery of some tools mostly needed and their marketing making it look like its already perfect, .…but as time goes on, I began to realize that it's just the beginning and every other apps started like this with a loosed stage just enough for us to get an idea of what's coming up. I believe, giving it some time that prodreams will eventually takes its center stage of truly revolutionizing the animation industry as procreate did….all in all, time will tell! I like what you are doing, keep it up and I own an Ipad with its pencil…..just incase!😂 you've got a new subscriber!👍

I share most of your opinions about Dreams, but I'm not that bothered by the minimalism of the app. I got my Ipad a few months ago and I always wanted to dabble into animation but I was always turned off by the lack of tutorials of the apps that I liked ( Rough animator, Toonsquid). The big advantage of Dreams is that I can grow my understanding of animation with the app and the hype around it pushes a lot of creators like Alex Grigg, Michael Reith or Aaron Blaise to put out content that helps us beginners to learn the app at the same time as them. A lot of people have been asking for features from other animation apps but as I'm not already commited to an interface, I don't mind at all. But I definitely want some of the tools we have in Procreate in Dreams.

For me, ToonSquid is the exact opposite of awesome. When I first began animating a music video everything was fine, but the more I animated, I guess the larger the file got. it eventually began slowing down and lagging like crazy. Especially when onionskin is engaged, it lags to the point where it becomes unworkable. I couldn’t wait for Dreams to launch, just to get back up to speed! I tried to convert my ToonSquid projects to videos that I could import into to Dreams, but whenever I tried to create a video file, ToonSquid crashed. Months of work gone to waste. Although Dreams is indeed frustrating to use at this point, I invite anyone to name ONE single app that launched WITHOUT bugs. All of the other animation apps have received YEARS of updating and still haven’t approached the eloquence of working in Dreams. What I love about Dreams is precisely what I love about Procreate. It feels just like a SKETCHBOOK. That’s how Artists learn to draw. For the first time in my life I’m able to study the subtleties of animation by sketching on my iPad. Just like it’s a digital sketchbook THAT ANIMATES!!✍🏽 That’s a MASSIVE Quantum Leap, because sketching DOESN’T feel like WORK, it feels like PLAY! And play has ALWAYS been the access to unparalleled breakthroughs! One of the things I love most, is Dreams ability to view frame by frames, by simply running an index finger horizontally through the timeline in full screen mode. It beats the daylights out of Toonsquid’s awkward 3 finger vertical timeline scrolling that feels so unnatural and counterintuitive. Speaking of intuitive I agree that Dreams currently feels challenging to learn how to navigate it. Hidden features and all. But that’s how I know that I am dealing with something UNPRECEDENTED and futuristic. I’m old enough to recall the iPhone, having the exact same crazy learning curve, But here it is years later, and every iPhone gesture is second nature.🤷🏾 As far as I’m concerned, dreams has the rest of our lives to perfect itself. I’m not judging it by how it performs right now, I’m excited about how fluid it will be in the future. No doubt years from now Animation will probably feel like magic! Performance mode ALREADY DOES!!💫

I have two friends who both talk about being animators. All three of us got Dreams on launch. All three of us complained and nit-picked about various aspects of the program feeling unfinished. However, one friend has done something like 12-15 different animations in it since launch, the other has got stuck on the one they started with. I’m somewhere in between. This leads me to feel strong _it’s not the app._ You either have a the passion for animation and work with it, or the app becomes your excuse for not doing it. I know people who animated in Mario Paint on SNES. No one can tell me Dreams is fiddlier than that! End of the day, we know Savage Team is gonna improve it. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty good. I’ve already made some fun things. My animator friend has blown me away with her work. Don’t let a few annoyances be your reason not to make things. Art is hard. Persevere!

You said the same thing I’ve been thinking and that’s the cannibalizing (possibility), which I don’t think is realistic. Reason being for exactly what you said, lots of illustrators that don’t want to animate. My personal take I really like the Dreams app but have run into some of the same issues. I think right now it should be called Create Dreams bc it’s missing the “PRO” functions that made their other app great. I think they will have to realize that or need to. you expecting too much out of $20. these apps are made for the non talented to feel like they can create with the aid of special tools and settings while they will be lost in professional workspace. let folks have fun and its only a few dollars to experiment and get addicted to creating so then later they can find a better app to become pros. I guess this is what click bait is all about. sorry to fall for it.
