I think Procreate is for intuitive artists that come from oil or acrylic painting and CSP or PS is for cartoonists, manga artists, animators, illustrators who work in publishing or draw with a lot details.

honestly yeah, i used csp and procreate for years and csp is honestly just so more comfortable to use once you get used to it.. everything from brushes to cropping to layer limits is so much better. if csp wasn’t subscription based for ipad i would’ve fully switched ages ago

You have to set the video settings under the canvas size you're using to 2k/4k and studio quality/loseless in order for both the full timelapse and exported timelapse to not be low quality-it takes up quite a bit of space though so I just keep it at a low resolution 😭

8:47 for the eyedropper, you can click the little square between brush size and opacity and automatically toggles the eyedropper. It's not the same of having a shortcut, but you can click it with the finger of your free hand while the others keep drawing :)

For me Procreate feels SLOW AF. Moving layers around, creating folders and putting stuff into it takes ages and those animations are way too long😭. Im really used to the quick navigating in CSP lmao. Also you cannot clip anything onto existing folders which annoys me because im using it a lot :( You are mentioning every single problem i have with this app and i will always finish my drawings in CSP. Procreate is nice for sketching and doodling but no way am i gonna full render a big piece there

The accidentally hitting gallery issue actually happened to me a LOT to the point I left feedback saying it would be a nice change to at least give a warning before exiting. I made a lot of stickers and would design them all on one canvas, then crop and export them one by one, undoing after. So many times I cropped them accidentally pressed gallary. >< I like procreate for sketching, thumbnailing and just initial design work, but I prefer Clipstudio for the rest. I think it works really well for younger artists that want to learn and find the price or the interface of other programs too much, but for more professional work I think its often too inconvinient.

Just opened the video but before it might or might not get said but: VECTOR LAYERS! I genuinely miss clip studio's ability to just have that? Edit: I'm saying I want to return to CSP just for vector layers specifically. It's sad, but I refuses to pay a sub for a program I have on my PC

CSP does have vector layers. Make sure your layer UI is stretched out enough to show more options since when its at its minimum, it only shows new layer, folder, merge etc. Its there, its just hidden away at first

I would never stop using procreate. I’ve been using that app for a while now. I did try other apps but I somehow never felt comfortable on any other app. I feel like procreate has everything I need, because I’m a pencil artist that’s draw with paper, so if I did on procreate app I won’t gonna need as much as you need.

I started using Procreate once I ‘permanently borrowed’ my mom’s Apple Pencil, and now I am never going back. I used to be a mouse MS paint artist for many years (I know, the horror) with assistance from Paint Tool Sai. I have basic drawing tablets for my computer but I just can’t get into them, so my iPad with the Apple Pencil has been a miracle. I can finish drawings in a few days instead of 2 months because drawing with a mouse takes ages and I’d get bored lol. That being said, as an artist with a not very complicated style, there were a few things that irked me: -Layer limit. My iPad is old but not exactly ancient and I like having as much room as I need in a canvas, so I usually end up having not a lot of layer wiggle room. I have progressively remedied this by not making as many layers and drawing certain things on the same layer to save space (and I’m too paranoid to merge layers until I’m done, so) -This program devours my iPad’s battery. Once I’m at about 40+ layers, the battery can go from 80% to 20% in less than an hour; it’s terrifying. I again remedy this by just keeping my iPad constantly plugged in while I draw, but I can also just feel the sheer amount of *heat* my iPad is giving off trying to run a complicated drawing. You could probably bake something on it. -When I first started using it, I found the UI overwhelming and honestly not very intuitive. I also wasn’t really finding much help with their official information for where stuff is, so I just learned as I went (since I used Paint Tool Sai for a while, it took me forever to figure out what Alpha Lock did because PTS had a different name for it). Even now I know there’s some features that would make parts of my process much easier, but I don’t know where they are and I’ll just stick to what I know. I think that’s how a lot of artists are. “This method to draw this sucks and I know it sucks but that’s how I’m used to it” haha I haven’t really run into certain peeves other artists might’ve had since again, my style is relatively simple with minimal lighting and shading, so my outlook on Procreate is more neutral. It’s my favorite art program so far, at least, but I still have some issues with it 👍

I haaaaaaaaate the way the brushes feel so smooth and perfect. I know it makes me sound insane but I liked digital art because it emphasised the scratchy feel of Lino prints and paper and ink on metal! With procreate everything just looks to shiny. I have all the smoothing stuff is turned to zero yet I can still feel it correcting my brush strokes. Ugh I have no idea how to express it but I want my art to feel crusty and pointy and rough around the edges not smoothed and ironed out:( I feel like someone is trying to take the punk out of my drawings and I don’t like it. It’s a very good program for people who want to get into digital art tho and are put off by the rigid interfaces of csp and photoshop. It’s so strange wanting to fight your program only for your punches to bounce back at you. I feel like nobody talks about this aspect of digital art.

4:47 I think that's exaclty why they do it. When an image is imported that is smaller than the canvas, it retains its exact size, somI see no reason why this would be different for larger images outside of their cropping issues

The complaint about it not being saved to the cloud is REAL. I was once trying to delete a single piece and accidentally deleted my portfolio folder. I stopped drawing for like 2 years after that.
@simpeers7 ай бұрын
The whole out-of-bounds thing you mentioned, right after them confirming that they pre-allocate each layer, is caused by the same reason. If you could do things outside the "layer", that means the layer has to be allowed to be infinitely large. Meaning, not possible to pre-allocate. Now, they could probably make it work somehow, but the cost would be the speed-gains they did this for in the first place. By having a finite size per layer, you always know just how many you can have, and you can speed up operations on these layers instead of trying to on the fly optimise the memory in ways that would allow this kind of feature. On a PC this sort of thing is fine to do as they're much faster and has more memory, but it's a very device target.

Petty reasons to dislike an app are totally valid. I can’t stand Spotify because of the half-second fade-out and fade-in when you pause and unpause a song. It drives me crazy and as of 2020 there’s no way to turn it off

tbh this is just a big list for procreate creators to fix with time, im sure that eventually these issues will be fixed, like, not liking the minimal UI? make an option to personalize the workspace (like photoshop or unity do), cludsafe? add an option to be able to link procreate to icloud, stuff like that, all of isues i have with this program could easily be fixed (not the isuess related to performance like layer cap and that stuff but personaly it dosent bother me)

I’ve just started using the app, and I think that my two biggest problems are the lack of a ruler tool, and the fact that sometimes the app will randomly switch me from brush to eraser with no prompting. I previously used autodesk sketchbook on a Samsung Galaxy, and that app functions very differently on an IPad.
@JoCheah10 ай бұрын
Procreate for me is just a casual program with limited functions, but I’ve greatly improved my workflow with a little external shortcuts keyboard. So stuff like brush size up/down, eyedropper, eraser/brush, undo/redo, etc etc are just one key press instead of having to gesture with my hands.

Ok, for point 3 in cropping I can give a tip for CSP to automatically crop everything outside of the layer, when needed. Select all your layers>right click inside the layer palette>Click on Create folder and insert layer. This will create a folder with all the layers, now select the folder>ctrl+A to select the whole canvas> be sure you've selected the layer>edit>delete outside selection. Done Everything I just said can be automatized using auto actions

On the GUI and keyboard shortcut issue, there are no shortcuts for rotating the brush and in order to do that you have to go into the brush settings every time. Yes, I know that the Apple Pencil has tilt to rotate the brush, but tilt sucks compared to having a stylus that has rotate built in like Wacom’s Art Pen. Having the rotate brush feature be always visibly available somewhere and key commands to be able to control it would be a great upgrade.

I know you mentioned it, but my problem with other iPad art apps is that they are subscription based, and the only way to use an art app without it being extremely limited is watch ads (which I find extrmemely disruptive), or pay a monthly fee. Which means that, if for whatever reason (because life happens) you can't afford that subscription, you just....can't do art? At least not without significantly more effort than it's worth without the majority of the tools. And maybe any w.i.p artwork you have at the time can technically still be accessed, but why would you want to work on it when you no longer have access to the feautures you did when you started it? With Procreate, you buy it one time, and it's yours forever. Sure, it has its limitations, but for me personally, once I got used to it, I've really enjoyed it. The only qol thing that still bothers me is the lack of cloud backups, but like you said, I just back up my work manually. An extra step that would be a nice qol improvement to not have to take, but it's also not a deal breaker for me.

8:44 I can see what’s bugging you, but below the brush resize slider there’s a little box- if you click on that it brings up the little magnifier to select a new colour. Just saying because it seemed to be annoying that you hand to use the hand holding your pencil- hope this helped! :)

I'm with you 100% I use Fresco to start sketching because it feels much freer and more natural than Procreate. But then I use Procreate to ink and colour because those are so much better there. I have a love-hate relationship with how the brushes in Procreate work, they feel counterintuitive to my stroke and they take me out of the process. Like pressure means something...but then it doesn't... I was wondering if it was just me and my skill level.

I’m really late, and I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this either. The reason why the image gets more pixelated when zooming in compared to other apps like Photoshop and CSP is because the canvases on Procreate are only capable of producing raster images. Programs such as Photoshop and CSP use vector image files instead, making it not pixelated when zooming in. I just wanted to add this because you mentioned that you couldn’t find why it does that, so I just wanted to drop that tidbit of knowledge on here!

I personally love procreate for what it is, but I whole heartily agree with the points that you made within this videos. As a person who uses 10000000000 layers, the layer limit is what gets me. I also love to use a lot of inking tools, and when i make a mistake within procreate and change it a bit, that lines loses its quality unless i redraw that same line again.

It can be a lot better but u can hack it with quick menus to make it easier to use. Not good for wanting to go pro with it, but it’s good to use on the road and starting artists who don’t want to buy tablets or csp.

Super love procreate but primarily use it for sketching. Having the minimalist UI can feel super freeing to just get idea generation going. Love Photoshop but all the bells and whistles can be intimidating and feel super formal when I just want to bang out an idea without much thought to it. It's especially notable for my process because I am very much someone who describes and illustrates form via linework rather than taking the more painterly/sculpterly approach. That being said, it feels rewarding when pulling Photoshop after the sketching stage and doing actual rendering and painting. Two completely different modes. Procreate keeps it fun for me while Photoshop keeps me a professional

Reasons 2 and 7 can be easily fixed with one piece of information, you can add a shortcut through procreate where if you tap once with two fingers at the same time, it undos what just happen. Now you can undo smt without accidentally saving your work and you also don’t have to worry about the canvas crop unless you realize much later on that you wanted to move smt back 😅

But I still use procreate all the time! Because it was the first digital art software I used the really complicated interfaces are too scary to me and I enjoy the simplicity of procreates!
