My biggest pet peeve with procreate is that it shows you brush size in percentage rather than pixels, and the percentage varies between each brush so 2% on brush A can be WAY bigger than 2% on brush B and it honestly annoys me so much and I don't understand why there isn't an option to just display it in pixels. This is why I use Artstudio Pro instead which is basically a mix of Procreate and Photoshop, honestly recommend it and it pains me to see how 95% of ipad users never even heard of it and just default to Procreate because it's what everyone uses

So everything you said is true, I agree with you, these gaps are extremely annoying for those working with their art. I'm sorry, but it's not a question of skills, it's a question of the developers not having designed this application for a professional audience. So, I simply press on that button to active the color picker and touch the screen on the color that I want with the pencil to change color - and there's no need to wait. But when I'm constantly using that button to pick the color, I happen to also accidently change the size of my brush instead- I swear that "sqaure" button is way too small sometimes lmao.

How you can randomly end up with a bunch of small lines or dots on your canvas since it will respond to your hand sometimes. The filling leaving half opacity pixels despite having the fill set to 99.9% (and more equals filling the whole canvas). The lack of basic layer property effects such as border. And the lack of clipping masks. I think its a great tool for starters but I feel like you have to finish in other software to have access to the most basic effects.

Procreate for me is just a casual program with limited functions, but I’ve greatly improved my workflow with a little external shortcuts keyboard. So stuff like brush size up/down, eyedropper, eraser/brush, undo/redo, etc etc are just one key press instead of having to gesture with my hands.

I use procreate and I like it! But I hate that it don’t have a normal “magic wand” and gap recognisation! Like I use “sketch” brush as an outline (I think it is a part of my style) and the program don’t recognise it as a fine line… so each time I have to make a grayscale just to have a correct selection

I personally love procreate for what it is, but I whole heartily agree with the points that you made within this videos. As a person who uses 10000000000 layers, the layer limit is what gets me. I also love to use a lot of inking tools, and when i make a mistake within procreate and change it a bit, that lines loses its quality unless i redraw that same line again.

The accidentally hitting gallery issue actually happened to me a LOT to the point I left feedback saying it would be a nice change to at least give a warning before exiting. I made a lot of stickers and would design them all on one canvas, then crop and export them one by one, undoing after. So many times I cropped them accidentally pressed gallary. >< I like procreate for sketching, thumbnailing and just initial design work, but I prefer Clipstudio for the rest. I think it works really well for younger artists that want to learn and find the price or the interface of other programs too much, but for more professional work I think its often too inconvinient.

I haaaaaaaaate the way the brushes feel so smooth and perfect. I know it makes me sound insane but I liked digital art because it emphasised the scratchy feel of Lino prints and paper and ink on metal! With procreate everything just looks to shiny. I have all the smoothing stuff is turned to zero yet I can still feel it correcting my brush strokes. Ugh I have no idea how to express it but I want my art to feel crusty and pointy and rough around the edges not smoothed and ironed out:( I feel like someone is trying to take the punk out of my drawings and I don’t like it. It’s a very good program for people who want to get into digital art tho and are put off by the rigid interfaces of csp and photoshop. It’s so strange wanting to fight your program only for your punches to bounce back at you. I feel like nobody talks about this aspect of digital art.

As someone who started on procreate and now a huge csp user i flippin agree one extra thing, VECTOR LAYERS oh my god. One thing i hate with procreate is enlarging something and its gone pixlated as heck. I have to be double sure before inking. It drives me up the wall! I love csp especially as i can cloud save and swap between my ipad and my xp pen on my pc. Ill only use pro create now for simply sketching out ideas, and thats only if my sketchbook isnt too hand and im too lazy to go and get it. 😅 I dont think ive used procreate for anything more than that now.

This actually cementing my unwillingness to get procreate and stick to csp through and through, even though it's not the cheapest investment, it's worth it. Super love procreate but primarily use it for sketching. Having the minimalist UI can feel super freeing to just get idea generation going. Love Photoshop but all the bells and whistles can be intimidating and feel super formal when I just want to bang out an idea without much thought to it. It's especially notable for my process because I am very much someone who describes and illustrates form via linework rather than taking the more painterly/sculpterly approach. That being said, it feels rewarding when pulling Photoshop after the sketching stage and doing actual rendering and painting. Two completely different modes. Procreate keeps it fun for me while Photoshop keeps me a professional

As someone who started with Procreate, switched to Clip Studio Paint, then switched back to Procreate - I definitely get it. My biggest issues with Procreate are the history and resizing. The reason things are more blurry when resizing on Procreate is because it's a raster based program (from what I remember reading) compared to Clip. If Procreate was more vector based, the resized blurring wouldn't be too much of an issue. Procreate is nice as a digital sketchbook in my opinion, which isn't a bad thing at all.

As someone who started out with procreate, u can make it work if ur only doing this for personal use, it’s very portable too, but for commercial commissions it’s be annoying to change sizes and is limited. It can be a lot better but u can hack it with quick menus to make it easier to use. Not good for wanting to go pro with it, but it’s good to use on the road and starting artists who don’t want to buy tablets or csp.

The whole out-of-bounds thing you mentioned, right after them confirming that they pre-allocate each layer, is caused by the same reason. If you could do things outside the "layer", that means the layer has to be allowed to be infinitely large. Meaning, not possible to pre-allocate. Now, they could probably make it work somehow, but the cost would be the speed-gains they did this for in the first place. By having a finite size per layer, you always know just how many you can have, and you can speed up operations on these layers instead of trying to on the fly optimise the memory in ways that would allow this kind of feature. On a PC this sort of thing is fine to do as they're much faster and has more memory, but it's a very device target.

I started using Procreate once I ‘permanently borrowed’ my mom’s Apple Pencil, and now I am never going back. I used to be a mouse MS paint artist for many years (I know, the horror) with assistance from Paint Tool Sai. I have basic drawing tablets for my computer but I just can’t get into them, so my iPad with the Apple Pencil has been a miracle. I can finish drawings in a few days instead of 2 months because drawing with a mouse takes ages and I’d get bored lol. That being said, as an artist with a not very complicated style, there were a few things that irked me: -Layer limit. My iPad is old but not exactly ancient and I like having as much room as I need in a canvas, so I usually end up having not a lot of layer wiggle room. I have progressively remedied this by not making as many layers and drawing certain things on the same layer to save space (and I’m too paranoid to merge layers until I’m done, so) -This program devours my iPad’s battery. Once I’m at about 40+ layers, the battery can go from 80% to 20% in less than an hour; it’s terrifying. I again remedy this by just keeping my iPad constantly plugged in while I draw, but I can also just feel the sheer amount of *heat* my iPad is giving off trying to run a complicated drawing. You could probably bake something on it. -When I first started using it, I found the UI overwhelming and honestly not very intuitive. I also wasn’t really finding much help with their official information for where stuff is, so I just learned as I went (since I used Paint Tool Sai for a while, it took me forever to figure out what Alpha Lock did because PTS had a different name for it). Even now I know there’s some features that would make parts of my process much easier, but I don’t know where they are and I’ll just stick to what I know. I think that’s how a lot of artists are. “This method to draw this sucks and I know it sucks but that’s how I’m used to it” haha I haven’t really run into certain peeves other artists might’ve had since again, my style is relatively simple with minimal lighting and shading, so my outlook on Procreate is more neutral. It’s my favorite art program so far, at least, but I still have some issues with it 👍

I love artstudio pro more than procreate on ios, despite artstudio pro costing more (40 dollars one time, though note that I got it back when it was only 10 dollars), i just find it’s more photoshop-like interface more intuitive. in addition, no layer limit, realistic color mixing (YELLOW AND BLUE MAKE GREEEEEEEN NOT GREEEEYYYY), and more filters/quality of life additions just make it so much nicer to use, at least in my opinion. On top of that, the dev is super active with their community and adds features that are suggested!

On the GUI and keyboard shortcut issue, there are no shortcuts for rotating the brush and in order to do that you have to go into the brush settings every time. Yes, I know that the Apple Pencil has tilt to rotate the brush, but tilt sucks compared to having a stylus that has rotate built in like Wacom’s Art Pen. Having the rotate brush feature be always visibly available somewhere and key commands to be able to control it would be a great upgrade.

Yes omg finally someone else who feels this way. As an artist who grew up with sai, csp was a very easy switch. The main reason I can't use procreate is because there's no proper bush stabilization. Only a "post-correction" which is not at all the same thing, and just ends up making my lines look stiff and also not how I drew them. Cannot stand it. That alone makes it entirely unusable for me

I myself couldn't work in procreate since I'm used to clip studio (and used paint tool sai before). I hate the fact that I couldn't have my functions windows open (like have layers window just floating around or just open all the time) and had to open them every time, I like to have my ui filled with what I need, even if it takes more screen space. Also lack of option to make folders as clipping masks which I can do in csp. And the most annoying thing for me was the fact that if you do flip horizontially/vertically, it doesn't flip your view but the entire thing, and if you tap undo, it flips back instead of, for example, erasing a line you made before flipping. I know I might have just get used to it, but I hated it so much that I just got myself a csp on ipad for convenience. I bought ipad to bring it to school with me and it is not my primary device for drawing, since I prefer working on my pc in clip studio. Maybe I am just picky when it comes to programs, but everyone uses what they like and there is nothing wrong with it!

I've been using the app since late 2020, so I've gone through most loops! Some issues I saw that aren't in IP is the cropping! I actually prefer the cropping, but sometimes I'lll shove a sketch into the void to delete it but it always comes back lol. Secondly, history. IP doesn't count layer filters or opacity as history. Finally, I love the filters in the app. Paintbrush and Gradient maps are so neat for coloring and blending!! Only downside really is the bigger your canvas, higher chance you may lag. (Could be my old tablet though.) My favorite feature though is the unlimited references you can have, and you can colordrop right from the image as well. Anyway, amazing video and have a great day!! ;-]
