Sprites > Models It just fits with the overall style more imo

Talking about 'sprites' in this game.... I'm surprised how they look so good in different lighting/shader areas. If you turn around them they seem like 3D models (Sprites have several angles and often look flat like 2D). "Are those really sprites??" I highly doubt that.
@Jan_Strzelecki Жыл бұрын
They are 3D models with some effects thrown on top of them, which is why they're affected by light.
@kailkage4244 Жыл бұрын
@@Jan_Strzeleckii got a repack so i could check the files, they are 100℅ sprites

Its possible to fake the effects of light on sprites with Normal Maps
@st.haborym9 ай бұрын
That's because they made different sprites to account for the different angles as opposed to just making one and calling it a day
@egioch3 жыл бұрын
I doubt those are prerendered, most likely it is just a low res shader. I definitely prefer the game with the pixilation turned on.

I wish we had this sort of functionality in Doom sourceport engines. It's BEAUTIFUL how it also accounts for vertical view discrepancies as well! :D
@rickhapstley38669 ай бұрын
I mean, yeah, Doom models were never 3d in the first place, contrary to prodeus. They aren't actually 2d sprites. Prodeus has a modern 3d engine without limitations. There are still plenty of mods that do 3d and voxel models on Doom.
@DoomKrakken9 ай бұрын
@@rickhapstley3866 I am fully aware that Prodeus was made in Unity and uses models that are rendered as a set of 2D sprites. As someone who has worked with GZDoom for over 9 years at this point, I am also aware of various mods for GZDoom that utilize voxel models and various other 3D models. :) I was actually trying to say two things, though... I wished we could have the ability to assign layers of sprites at different , to take pitch into account for displaying a different graphic... and I wished we had the ability to render 3D models as sprites in GZDoom. The devs have clearly said both options are nearly impossible and highly infeasible to implement, which really sucks. Now, I'm finding my own way.

Sprites look fantastic for sprites, models look janky for models. I prefer sprites for that reason (it's entirely to do with the floaty slow animations)
@m3t4llic693 жыл бұрын
Sprites or low pixel if you wanna call it that way blends way better into the theme, so it is my preferred way to play.
@Spacecoke Жыл бұрын
I prefer the models. The sprites just look janky when tgey rotate which is totally different from the scenery. Imo the sprites dont match the rest of the game. The sprites just seem like a retro nostalgia thing to me. I just wish there was an option for smoothly animated weapons too.
@NeoWorm5 ай бұрын
Agree, the sprites are just forced nostalgia, it just feels worse for it. I was disappointed when weapons stayed as sprites when switching to models.

I don't see any sprites. I see models with flat light, no frame interpolation and pixellated in post.

yeah people tend to call pixelated 3d = sprites, its okay to call it that way. this game is really something, everything is done superbly, i DONT SEE anything less than superb about this game.

The sprites are just the same models only choppy and low res. In this environment with these effects and with the way how these sprites were created it's just downgrade. A placebo effect just like low FPS animation in movies that objectively looks and feels worse but triggers your nostalgia. I like sprite based shooters, but in Prodeus the spites add nothing except choppines to otherwise fluid game. If you want sprites you do it either because you can't do models of high enough quality (not this case), you want to put in some more artistic stylization that models can't do (not this case, those sprites are direct renders of the models, nothing was changed about how they look) or because you want better clarity in your game and sprites provide more readable silhouettes and pattersn for recognition (also not this case, both sprites and models blend in the environment and are covered by effects and darkness all the time, they had to add glowing parts to all enemies so they wouldn't blend that much even). None of these three apply for Prodeus.
