I feel *hurt* for Malcolm. It's hearbreaking... He will feel terrible for the rest of his life, guilt and shame will probably haunt him forever, and he didn't do anything wrong... It was self defense. Malcolm is not a bad son, he is not the same as Martin, no matter what his dad says. And even if Martin survives, Malcolm will still feel deeply hurt because now he believes he is not a good son because he morally hurt his dad... He used to think and believe he is not like him, but after what happened in this last episode, there is no doubt he will think otherwise. He will withdraw and be in pain forever... But... Noooo ! It's not his fault !

I love how poetic this was, like martin had changed... only to be pulled back to who he was by his son. Which is probably why he chose to kill him in that moment, because he knew he was basically back to square one again... and would have thought "ah what the hell." (plus he wanted to be free). At least... that is what it is on the surface, I reckon martin never intended to kill malcom, just to make malcom think he was, in order to get him to show his true colours (which he saw when malcom basically forced him to torture the woodsman). So he could at least see who his son really is once before he goes away forever (be it death or prison), him being the victim wouldn't have mattered much, cause well... "That's my boy.". also notice how slowly he was moving to "kill malcom" he was intentionally giving him plenty of time to counteract him, probably wouldn't have even stabbed him somewhere that would have actually killed him had maclom not flipped the scenario, but I doubt that would have happened. basically good ol dad martin used his sons profiling ways against him to show him who he is, at the cost of being stabbed that is.

Michael Sheen is so incredible in this entire show, but this last scene has some amazing moments. You can see the exact instant when he flips and justifies to himself the decision he's making to kill his son. The character works so well because Sheen is so charismatic, like you KNOW he's a vicious killer but he also has that veneer of dear old Dad, and when the mask slips he's pretty terrifying.
@mysterysunfurled3 жыл бұрын
I think Dr Whitly didn't really wanna kill him. He wanted his son to stab him to show him they're the same. If he had really wanted to kill Malcolm he would've been more discreet when he attacked him, but instead he let him know what he was going to do so Bright had enough time to react. That's my take. Feel free to disagree but you won't change my mind. Also don't forget to sign the petition to save Prodigal Son!
@hf4f5013 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I believe Martin did this on purpose so as to make Malcolm doubt himself too... Martin knew he was going to get caught and surely sent back to Claremont. He wanted to avoid this at all costs, and the only way was to die... But Martin is a narcissist and commiting a suicide is not like a him. That's why he lied to his son and let him have enough time to counteract. He killed 2 birds in one stone : he will never come back to Claremont, and Malcolm will never forget him... The only way for Martin to etch this event into Malcolm's memory was to hurt him emotionally and psychologically... Martin doesn't care the way Malcolm will remember him as long as he will remember him. Malcolm will hate the way he will remember his dad because of what he did to him. Of course, Malcolm didn't want to kill Martin, it was self defense, but Malcolm has got super strong self-awareness. He has been feeling guilty for years because he couldn't save his father's victims, including the Girl in the Box (he even apologized to her later even though she was still alive). He will carry an overwhelming guilt forever, even though it's not his fault. Martin knows all of this. He knows how much Malcolm is attached to his own values. But he doesn't care if he is hurt or not. All he wants is someone to always remember him, no matter the way they do. He needs to be in his son's head so he will always be alive. When I heard him say "We are the same", I couldn't help despising Martin more than I thought I could. It's disgusting what he did to Malcolm... He is traumatized... Because of him. Again. Plus, they are defintely not the same. They understand killers' mind, doesn't mean they are the same. Malcolm is scared of himself because of his ability to get into the killers' heads, unlike Martin. Martin has got cognitive empathy. That's all. Malcolm has got cognitive, affective and somatic empathy. Also Malcolm does a lot of self-reflection, unlike Martin. There are so many things that prove they are not the same, but Martin has never understood this... Or maybe he did... He defintely did... But you know... He is stubborn. He defintely got that him and Malcolm are not the same, but playing mind games with him is his speciality... Also I know that most people see Malcolm as a manipulative person because he asked his father to hurt the Woodsman but then called the cops on him, but I don't agree... Malcolm didn't have to push Martin to hurt the killer, but Martin didn't have to say yes. He defintely enjoyed torturing him. As Malcolm said, he belongs to jail. He cannot live outside Claremont... It's not fair... He destroyed many people's lives, including his own family's life. Letting him go would not be fair... And Malcolm is not manipulative... I think that all of this was part of Martin's plan... Make Malcolm ask him to hurt the killer and then blame him for being a bad son... I've never hated the Surgeon that much...

Just watched the finale, head spinning. Am I the only one that hopes this causes a psychotic break for Malcolm and he gets put in Claremont. Either Martin is dead, but is constantly talking to him, while Malcom is tied to a wall in his father's cell, or he survives and they face each other in the yard. Think that would be an awesome season 3 if it does get renewed. On another note I love the 2 children how Malcolm ends up being stabilized and clinical with violence like his father (steady hand when someone is screaming or he is stabbing someone/ disposing of body), but tormented by that part of him (like the Mum in knowing what her husband was). And Ains, who is cool calculating and ambitious like her father in day to day life, but becomes emotional and unstable when killing someone (hence excess stabs, blacking out), but then possesses no guilt. They are an interesting mix of their parents.

But is Martin a little bit right about Malcolm tricking him?
@mayaelliott26743 жыл бұрын
Definitely, when Malcolm wanted to convince Martin that he wasn’t supposed to be free and that he was saving him, he referred to him as “dad” almost as if he was using his knowledge that his father would try to fix their relationship (as he had tried to do a lot during this arc in the season) the moment Malcolm gave him a hint that he could possibly consider him as his dad rather than just Dr. Martin Whitley. Or when he tried to convince him to hurt The Woodsman earlier in the episode he was able to do it by asking him “as his son”. Could be a stretch, but Malcolm seems to be quite manipulative in these instances.
@alixboudou42613 жыл бұрын
But even if Malcolm "tricked" him this doesn't change anything, even if Martin could actually change (what I don't believe in) Martin still belongs to prison. Him being changed or not doesn't matter, at the end of the case, even if he would have managed to "prove" he changed, Malcolm would still have to call the police on his father (even if he didn't hurt the Woodsman) he still killed 23 people. There was never an agreement between them that if Martin proved he changed Malcolm wouldn't call the police so I don't know if we can really say it was a "trap"/"trick". I wonder what would have happened, how would Martin react, in the scenario where Martin doesn't hurt the Woodsman and where Malcolm still call the police (because he has to, there is no other alternative, he can't let him in the world free) (I don't know if it's comprehensible, sorry English isn't my first language)

@@alixboudou4261 it is actually an interesting one. Because like Jerry, people end up in psychiatric prisons, by taking a plea not guilty by reason of insanity (so they admit the crimes, but not actually held responsible). So actually if you could prove you are better, you get released and don't serve the sentence. The issue, is that a true psychopath, does not get better, as there an issue with the pathways in the brain. But you can never 100% say someone is a psychopath so ...

But what he got back was only guilty feelings for the mistakes he has not done. That ending was shit imo. The moment Malcolm called the police on his father and himself had me cussing like a sailor. Martin did literally everything for his son, even tortured someone against his own will (even though Malcolm should have done it, lets face it. He made Martin do all the dirty work, used him, and hurt him immensely), and fucking broke and betrayed him. Sure, Martin was a serial killer, but he truly loved his son. Furthermore, he changed for his son, and became a better person so his son could love him back. And what did Malcolm do? He broke his heart, betrayed him, and killed him eventually (yes, I know it was self-defense, but still). In these last moments of the show, from the moment Malcolm made Martin torture the other guy, Malcolm was the monster, not Martin. Whatever would have happened to Malcolm from now on, he had it coming, and it'd have been his own damn fault. Fucking hell.
