For anyone wondering where I got the inspiration for this format, it's the PBA's original doubles format, seen here in this 1966 match between the teams of Dick Weber and Bob Strampe versus Glenn "Mr. 900" Allison and Carmen Salvino. I remember the PBA did this format a couple of years ago when they had the ball companies face off against each other and Jason Belmonte and Ryan shafer (team storm) beat Chris Barnes and bill o Neil (team hammer) 300-280. I really enjoyed seeing this format because of how high scoring this format was

All these guys did great today! What great matches and Final Match...you sure this isn't the PBA? Cause these young people are really bringing their "A" game!! Great job guys! I really loved the Final too! Great Job to Coach Randy too! The format was fun. Let's do it again sometime...

Thanks. The show's subscriber base has grown steadily since we launched the show last Fall. Consider: When I first started this BrownswickBowling channel, it was so I could have a place to post videos of ME bowling (as if anyone would be so bored as to find THAT interesting to watch). Not surprisingly, the channel amassed only about 30 subscribers. 30 *VERY* bored people. Then, in September of 2016, I started posting these "junior bowling videos" before we even gave the series its name. Over the Christmas break a few months later, we passed the 1,000 subscribers mark. And I figured it might plateau right about there. But over that same Christmas break, I also spent some time working on some of the graphics on the show, upping the production values of PRODIGY. And I think that helped send the signal that I'm in it for the long haul. Subscribers kept finding us (partly because I post these videos on social media everywhere I can think of posting it -- and I encourage you to do the same). Here it is October and we just crossed the 6,000 subscribers mark a few days ago. Might we hit 7,000 by the Christmas break this year? Maybe. We'll see. Our fans are the best asset we have. The more you guys share these videos and tell others to share them, the more we can spread the show to all four corners of the world.

One of my few beefs with the old "Pro Bowlers Tour" telecasts on ABC with Chris Schenkel and Bo Burton, and even with all the subsequent PBA telecasts right up to today, is that while they've always had their own brand of "features" on the show (Bo Burton used to do a "Rolaids Tip of the Week" each week, for instance), I always would have preferred seeing them do a feature on the history of the game, showing bowlers from the past -- many of whom I grew up watching, and would have loved to see again. Hence, the "Legends of the Game" feature. As a coach, and as a bowling evangelist, I consider it my duty to educate these kids (and viewers of the show) about our sport's rich history. You know, if you're a pro football fan, it's quite likely that you know who Johnny Unitas and Dick Butkus and Bronco Nagurski are. If you're a basketball fan, I imagine you know of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Larry Bird and Michael Jordan. Similarly, any baseball fan who doesn't know who Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth and Don Drysdale were should have his license to eat peanuts, popcorn and Cracker Jack revoked for life. So why wouldn't bowling fans know who people like Dick Weber, Don Carter, Ned Day, Andy Varipapa, Lou Campi, Ray Bluth, Floretta McCutcheon and Marion Ladewig were? I'll eventually get around to all of 'em on the Legends feature. I also intend to use my extensive library of "BowlingOldies" to feed some other Legends features, not necessarily focused on individual bowlers. It adds a little more work to the production of each week's show, but I hope that over time, it will be a portion of the show that is fondly embraced. So far, the response has been positive. And you know what? I have a feeling that fifty or sixty years from now, someone will come along and produce a future PRODIGY series similar to this and will be featuring some of the kids you see on PRODIGY today as "Legends of the Game."

You're doing a great job with this series. I'm almost 64, and I can remember watching the old bowling series where they had a guy write in the scores on the big board for everyone to see. No computer magic back then. And you can certainly see how styles of throwing the ball has changed over the decades. It's fun to watch PRODIGY. The kids are talented, polite, and respectful.

Long before I launched PRODIGY last year, I've had another KZbin channel, BowlingOldies. And I guess I've long been one of a small handful of bowling video collectors (although I woudln't pretend to be the most prolific -- I am not, by a long shot). Having grown up watching bowling during its golden era when every local market seemed to originate two or three of its own bowling shows each week and we had multiple bowling shows on network and syndication, it was hard for a kid my age not to be exposed to a lot of bowling. Back in those days, bowling was every bit as much a "major" sport in America as baseball, football, and certainly a lot bigger than basketball. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, I've long had a fascination with the old-timers of the game, and I've wanted to add this feature to PRODIGY for quite a while. I just finally made the commitment to do the extra work each week to include it. I think it adds an important dimension to the show. And I'm so gratified to hear from those who enjoy it.

Im pretty sure all of us followers see the dedication you are putting to this channel. I recently discover bowling, just about 1 year ago, and I gotta tell you that no sport or even activity has ever made me as happy as bowling does. Which makes me sad also to see this great sport going through a crisis all over the world. As you said so, bowling isn´t nearly as much popular as it was back in the 50´s 60´s 70´s or even the 80´s. Imagine what is like to live in a latinoamerican country where Football (or soccer as north americans call it) is the only seriously taken sport (and a bit of rugby). The is no room for bowling at all. My coach (his name is Lucas Legani if you ever heard of him) is the number 1 player of the whole country and although he is sponsored by ebonite and ultimate he makes a living out of teaching people like me (a guy who has been bowling for less than a year). Don´t get me wrong, he likes what he does, and im from the group of people that believe every job is dignified just for the effort it takes, but he should be able to spend more time practicing for the PBA or European tour rather than spending it fixing the barely 4 lanes our bowling center has. Yeah he fixes the lanes and prepares them for league and tournaments.

Very nice to see the switch up to a more difficult pattern. Not as fun to watch. But, a good thing for the kids to experience. I was most impressed by Tyrel this week. You might want to teach the kids how to properly shake hands. Many were using their left hands.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
I think the left-handed handshake is a little thing they've started on their own. They know to shake right-handed. It may develop into a PRODIGY thing, and I'm cool with it. As for the pattern, my intent all along has been to get them back on a sport shot on a more regular basis. The problem was, our head lane guy (Facilities Manager is his title) was up to his eyeballs catching up on maintenance issues that had built up over the past few years as a result of neglect and poor management. It's one of the reasons he was hired. He brought in a bunch of the top mechanics from the chain to assist in the maintenance project, and it took several weeks. They're still not quite finished, but things are a whole lot better now than they were. I didn't want to pile on to his to-do list by asking to have him run a sport shot for us until I knew he was past the critical stage of his big project. Now that he is, and now that he's hired a new, highly competent lane guy with some experience to work on Saturdays when the kids are bowling, I felt the time was right. So I expect we'll be on a sport shot most weeks from here on. That said, there will be weeks when I specifically ask to leave the house shot out. I actually like it when the scores are ridiculously high. It's a different kind of pressure, but it's pressure nonetheless, and a player has to be equipped to handle it.

Reading some of the comments and it's pretty pathetic hating on a few junior high school kids that enjoy competition with friends. Randy and I agree that the equipment we used as junior bowlers is no longer viable for today's lane conditions. Yes, the kid's now days have great equipment however that equipment will go wherever the bowler tells it to go. You still have to hit the correct spots in order to score well! These children do a fine job at doing just that!
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
As I have stated on almost every episode of PRODIGY since I first dreamed up the slogan, "the mission of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers." If you read the liner notes at the top of this page, you'll see that I warn everyone to keep their comments positive. Not because I'm looking to puff up these kids needlessly. It's just that comments that serve only the purpose of riduling, complaining or otherwise dissing these junior bowlers serves no useful purpose and is not in keeping with our mission or the spirit of the show. Furthermore, I state in those liner notes that such negative comments may be removed, and in some cases, I may even take the extreme measure of blocking someone from posting on this channel again. Look, I'm one of the easiest people to get along with you'd ever meet. But I will not tolerate someone who comes here only to vent about what's wrong with bowling and to rant about how kids today just can't bowl. I've heard that load of crap before. And if he wants to test that theory, he can bring his equipment and try to defeat these junior bowlers on the lanes. He'll find out first-hand if they can "adjust" to changing lane conditions or not. And we'll find out whether he can, as well. I welcome and encourage comments on this page and this channel. I also don't discourage criticism. All I ask is that it be CONSTRUCTIVE criticism that comes from a place of trying to be helpful -- "Elevating Junior Bowlers." The person to whom you're referring merely wanted to be critical, and offered exactly nothing in the way of positive suggestions to help make these kids better. Frankly, people like him are precisely what's wrong with bowling.

Here's the detailed explanation of what happened: For starters, the show is shot (until we get the new camera) with an iPhone 7 Plus in 4K, edited in 720p. My iPhone has the full 256 GB of storage on the flash drive, so there's lots of space there. For the past few weeks, I'd forgotten to delete the old footage from previous shows still left on the Camera Roll. So, on Friday night, the night before we filmed this show, I went through the Camera Roll and deleted all the old PRODIGY raw footage that was still there. But I forgot one step. You see, on the iPhone, when you delete items from the Camera Roll, it doesn't actually remove them from the hard drive. It merely moves them into an album called "Recently Deleted." They're not gone until you go into the "Recently Deleted" album and empty it. That's what I failed to do. So, during the filming of the show, a few frames into the 3rd match, the iPhone was giving me an error message saying the Storage was Full. I knew this couldn't be right, until I snapped to the fact that I'd failed to empty the Recently Deleted album. One of the parents quickly loaned me his phone and I started recording with it after missing only one shot. Meanwhile, I diagnosed the problem on my iPhone and set out to remedy it by scrolling through and finding the "Recently Deleted" album and removing everything from there, essentially "emptying the trash." Once that was done, I knew I had enough storage left. I wasn't, however, as sure that my battery would hold 'til the end of the show. Still, I got my phone swapped out with the one loaned to me by one of the parents, and resumed filming. Unfortunately, there was a little start and stop at first as I was getting the camera properly re-adjusted and the shot framed. (Which is why you see my finger briefly in the shot.) Unfortunately, the parent who graciously allowed me to use his camera couldn't get the footage to me via email, so rather than trying to come with some clever way of covering up the screw-up, I just decided to be honest and say on the show that there had been a technical issue that prevented us from recording a portion of the match, and that we're now jumping ahead to the 7th frame. Those few shots that were recorded on the other phone that we couldn't get transferred in time to be in the final edit of the show weren't anything that affected the outcome in any meaningful way. That match was won by nearly 100 pins. So believe me, you didn't miss much. That said, I do *hate* messing up like this. I'm a perfectionist, and whenever I screw up like this, nobody beats me up quite as much as I beat myself up. That said, if I'd known this format would cause us to run over so much, I would have waited until we had the new camera, which I expect will give us a bit longer durations we can shoot without running the risk of running out of battery and storage. Lesson learned. The good news is, I was going to order the new camera this past Sunday. However, B&H in New York informed me that the price they had quoted me on the camera ($849) was a "sale" price, and that the camera was presently selling for $999. But they said it would once again be on sale starting this Sunday. So I'll order next week. Which means we'll soon no longer have to deal with such issues.

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
McFluffy simply won't commit to lowering his swing. He's stubborn, and I'm losing patience with him. (Hey, I love the kid, but I'm being honest.) Until he commits to making this change, he's never going to be as good as he wants to be. He bowls okay on a house shot (although even there, he's very inconsistent). But he struggles in every tournament he enters on a sport shot. Until he fixes this fundamental issue, his problems will continue. It not only makes him less accurate, but it screws up his timing in a huge way and makes it next to impossible for him to have any speed control whatsoever. It also makes him no better than an average spare shootere. Plus, he has nowhere to "gear up" if he needs to throw it any harder. What's worse is, the more he struggles, the more he reverts to his old ways, making it that much worse. It's extremely frustrating for me as a coach, and I'm sure for him, too. Yet he simply won't change. There is much I've tried to work with him on (like learning to take a little off the ball when he's bowling on short oil or shooting spares), but he seems to only know one way to bowl and is unwilling to put in the work and make the commitment to build any muscle memory doing it the right way. I've told him that if he won't commit to the changes we've discussed, I may recommend to his mom that she simple take bowling away from him. That got his attention real fast. For about five minutes. But after that, he's back to his old ways again. I'm at the end of my rope with him. (Clearly, it's a different kind of relationship I have with him than I have with the other kids. I feel that this sort of sternness is necessary and entirely appropriate with him.)

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
I wish I had a dollar for every time someone suggests this. There's a good reason why it hasn't happened. How many ball manufacturers are there? A dozen? Twenty? Heck, I don't know. Let's just say there's a bunch. And how many different balls have they had in their product line over, say, the past five years? A hundred? Two hundred? A thousand? Now, I ask you: Do you know them all? Would you recognize them all on sight? Because I know for sure I wouldn't. Even if I had a list of every ball each kid carries in his arsenal (and I can tell you most of these kids walk into the bowling center each Saturday with 4 to 6 balls, and a couple of them bring more than that). Honestly, between herding these cats to get them briefed on the format we're using that week, shooting photographs (and on some weeks, videos from the front) for the "player introduction" segment of the show's opening sequence, mounting the camera and setting up the shot, monitoring the camera to make sure it's still running, tabulating the scores in both the qualifying round and stepladder (and in some cases, like this week, actually keeping score by hand since the computer software wouldn't know what to do with the format we were using this week), and then of course the 20-25 hours I spend each week ingesting the footage into my computer at home and editing the show, quite frankly, I have enough to keep me busy without having to keep track of 40 or 80 bowling balls that these kids are carring into the bowling center. I know the Storm line, because that's what I throw. I've never really cared much about any other product line (I don't even pay much attention to Storm's sister line, Roto Grip). But the minute you want to come participate as a "research assistant" during the filming of the show, I'll be happy to lean on your expertise to enhance the show with this little nugget of information that will take about 10 seconds of time during the show. Frankly, I just find it to be a little too much for me to handle. Besides, I'm a coach. While I certainly recognize the importance of properly "matching up" one's equipment to the lane conditions, as a coach, I'm far more concerned with HOW the bowlers are throwing their equipment than I am WHICH balls they're throwing. I hope that answers your question. I don't mean to be a wise guy about it. It's just one of those things that I keep saying I'll try to include, and I do sometimes ask the kids what they're throwing. In some cases (like with Christian), I know what's in his arsenal, and the balls are easy to distinguish from afar. But with some of our kids, like Charlie and Tyrell, they add new bowling balls to their arsenal about as often as you and I change socks. So it's impossible to keep up with. And honestly, I don't really want to.

At 1:34:27 and 1:35:05 I noticed that the NPS(New Pins Solenoid) engaged causing those lanes to switch to 2nd ball which tells me that the scoring was on the 3rd ball on the tenth frame. Remember to try and make sure the scores on the scoring system match up so the NPS doesn't engage when it shouldn't.
@ProdigyBowlersTour

You are exactly right. You see, because we were doing this oddball format, the overhead scoring being kept by the software was useless. So we just had random numbers up on the scoresheet while I was keeping the official score by hand (the old-fashioned way). What happened was, the overhead scoring thought we were in the 10th frame on a fill ball. So when Charlie left that 10 pin in the 10th frame of the 4th match, the pinsetter was doing exactly what it was supposed to do. The scoring software thought he was throwing the fill ball in the 10th. So it swept the spare away, as it should. If I'd noticed it, I would have erased a frame of scoring so the pinsetter wouldn't interrupt us. I'm frankly surprised this didn't happen more often.

I've been wanting to get the sports shot out for a while. It's just that our lane guy had been up to his eyeballs in catching up on some maintenance issues, and I didn't want to pile one more thing on his plate. So I waited until it wouldn't seem like I was piling on. Plus, we used to have the leagues bowl on lanes 27-40 and have them put a sport shot down on 23-25 for PRODIGY. But I wanted the sport shot and PRODIGY down on the end, so we could get as far away from the birthday parties and riff-raff as possible. That meant getting with the woman who keys in the lane assignments and blocks out lanes for reservations so we could flip things. I got all that approved at the same time last week. Turns out we needed a third pair of lanes for PRODIGY because we had so many kids come to bowl. We'll see if that continues, or if it was an anomoly.

Good question. A week ago Sunday (the 8th), I phoned B&H in New York to order the cammie and accessories. To my surprise, they were closed for a Jewish holiday...and the recording said they would not re-open until the 15th. (I should be so lucky to be able to close for business for so long!) So, this past Sunday, the day they said they'd re-open, I called to order the cammie and accessories again. This time, I was told that the price they had quoted me for the camcorder ($849) was a "sale" price, and that the camera was not on sale at this time. It was selling instead for ($999), a difference of $150. But they said the camera would be going back on sale this Sunday (the 22nd). So my plan at this time is to call and order the camera this Sunday or a few days later once the sale price is back in effect. (Apparently, it's not B&H that sets this sale price, it's Sony). And I need to call the sellers of the camera platform to get some guidance on how best to haul this thing around. It weighs about 100 lbs., so I'm going to need something to wheel it around on. I'm not sure exactly what it looks like when it's collapsed. Plus, there's another item I need to order from B&H when I order the camera which wasn't included in our GoFundMe inventory (a professional bag for the camera and accessories). Bottom line, all these items will be ordered soon.

Not sure what you mean by "district." You mean "school district?" That would imply your school has a bowling program, but no teams? Check with your local bowling center. Most bowling centers have a youth program. Most of them bowl leagues on Saturday mornings. They'll bowl teams.

Leagues are where you find team bowling. Well, that and in tournaments. But you need to be a USBC member to bowl in most tournaments. And most people join USBC by bowling in a league.

Question in best ball is that we’re a mulligan comes in
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
No. Best ball is simply where both players have a chance to throw a strike. If the first one strikes, there's no need for the second player to throw a shot. But if the first one doesn't strike, the second one can bail out the frame by striking. If both players fail to strike, the team has to decide which of the two spares they want to shoot. Whoever leaves the spare, the other partner shoots it. Only one of the two spares can be attempted. We'll bring back the "Cut Throat Mulligan" format later this year. I liked it.

One of the things that makes PRODIGY unique is that we will mix up the format every now and then. Most people consider that part of the show's charm. We'll have another doubles event in the near future (the Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout, open only to BZ Roswell kids). But I've long wanted to do a Best Ball Doubles event like this. It's the original PBA doubles format, dreamed up by none other than Don Carter. You can see some of the greatest players of all time try their luck at it in this 1966 match: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5mkgKWAabBslZI

@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I gotcha. The thing about mixing up formats is, some of them are "once in a while" (or even "once a year") formats. Others, like the Single Ball Elimination, is one we'll use several times a year. But our bread-and-butter is the 5-man (or woman) stepladder. The thing about doubles formats is, there's a variety of different ways of doing it. There's Scotch Doubles (where players alternate throwing shots). There's alternate frame, where one player bowls the odd numbered frames and the other bowls the even numbered frames (like a 2-man "Baker" format). There's of course the doubles format where both players bowl a full game and the team total is their score for the game. (I'll never do that format -- it would make the show much too long.) And there's this Best Ball Doubles format. We've done alternate shot before (and we'll be doing it again for the Thanksgiving event), so I didn't want to do that. Bottom line: We had 18 kids start on Saturday, and about two-thirds of them came from elsewhere to bowl with us. So I decided I wanted more of them to "make the cut," so I opted for a doubles format so we could have ten out of the 18 make the show. I like throwing curves at the kids, so it was time to give them a format they'd never seen before. Truthfully, I think they had a lot of fun with this format. Given that the oil pattern was so challenging, it also gave them a chance to throw some pretty good scores, despite being confused by what was happening on the lanes. This'll likely be no more than a "once in a blue moon" kinda format. But I definitely like it.

Im surprised after the first game no one was playing the ditch thats what i would do
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure the ditch was exactly the right place to play. 38 foot oil pattern. The Rule of 31 tells us the best bet is to have the ball right around the 7 board at the end of the pattern, at the 38 foot mark. As you'll see in this match, players who got the ball out much wider than that saw it hang and not recover.

What i mean by the ditch is that 5-6-7 area. I would try a low rg assym ball with a hybrid cover sanded to about 1000 grit and just staying up the back. I think i would fair well

What a shame that none of these young bowlers know how to adjust to the shot. It's not all crank crank crank. Juiced equipment is killing the skill aspect of the sport of bowling.

@shawningalls5157 6 жыл бұрын
You really have no idea what you're talking about. It's too bad people don't research before they comment. Most started this pattern right and tight to outside. Broke down fast so they ADJUSTED in. If you watch tyrell he's throwing 2 different balls during match play because lane 40 was grabbing and 39 was holding. Most of these kids prefer sport shot and house. I know of at least 4 kids that threw urethane up the gut to start with.

shawn ingalls - as a matter of fact, I do know what I'm talking about. I am a regional touring professional. I've been bowling for over 20 years, over 25 regional wins. Other than Charlie and little Logan who actually shows skill and ability, the rest are just chucking rocks.
@roksnosalt

shawn ingalls and you proved my point in your reply, by stating that they have to use different balls on different Lanes rather than adjust to the Lane. Hence the sport of bowling is being killed by the equipment. When Joe Blow can go to the pro shop and spend $300 for a ball and have it hit the pocket and not know anything about the lane conditions. The arrow system. Or board by board shot play. Like I said your reply proves my point.

+shawn ingalls - I hear this stuff all the time. Just another hater. This noise usually comes from grumpy old-timers who would have us all go back to plastic and rubber balls on wood lanes. Fact is, these kids are better bowlers today than I was when I was PBA. They put more on the ball with less effort, they’re more versatile, and lord knows, they squeeze better scores out of demanding lane conditions than I ever could. The original poster’s comments tell me he’s jealous of these kids and knows they can bowl circles around him.
