What do Ben and Nate think of selecting produce as an early prospecting category for new brokers/agents? Here is what I have heard: produce is easier to get into as a new vendor, but also easier to get fired from. Produce damage and claims are almost inevitable and it can be very sketchy for particularly expensive and perishable items like Raspberriers/strawberries. There are lots of nuances to loading specific produce that can trip up new brokers.

That is very true. Claims are an inevitable aspect of running produce. However, some produce categories are less likely to incur claims than others. Potatoes, onions and apples for instance. Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries have the highest claims. I would suggest you try to secure some lumber loads for your first few transactions. If you have the basics down as a freight broker, moving on to the hardier produce categories shouldn't be too difficult.
